Al-Qur'an Surah Muhammad Verse 31

Muhammad [47]: 31 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُمْ حَتّٰى نَعْلَمَ الْمُجٰهِدِيْنَ مِنْكُمْ وَالصّٰبِرِيْنَۙ وَنَبْلُوَا۟ اَخْبَارَكُمْ (محمد : ٤٧)

walanabluwannakum
وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُمْ
And surely We will test you
ḥattā
حَتَّىٰ
until
naʿlama
نَعْلَمَ
We make evident
l-mujāhidīna
ٱلْمُجَٰهِدِينَ
those who strive
minkum
مِنكُمْ
among you
wal-ṣābirīna
وَٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ
and the patient ones
wanabluwā
وَنَبْلُوَا۟
and We will test
akhbārakum
أَخْبَارَكُمْ
your affairs

Transliteration:

Wa lanabluwannakum hattaa na'lamal mujaahideena minkum wassaabireena wa nabluwa akhbaarakum (QS. Muḥammad:31)

English / Sahih Translation:

And We will surely test you until We make evident those who strive among you [for the cause of Allah] and the patient, and We will test your affairs. (QS. Muhammad, ayah 31)

And We will certainly test you until We know those of you who carry out Jihād (struggle in Allah’s way) and observe patience, and until We check your episodes.

We will certainly test you ˹believers˺ until We prove those of you who ˹truly˺ struggle ˹in Allah’s cause˺ and remain steadfast, and reveal how you conduct yourselves.

We will certainly test you so as to reveal those of you who struggle [in Allah’s way] and remain patient, and We will test sincerity of your assertions.

We shall certainly test you until We know those of you who truly strive and remain steadfast, and will ascertain about you.

We shall try you in order to know who are the fighters among you, and who are men of fortitude, and verify your histories.

And We shall indeed test you until We make known the warriors and the steadfast among you – and to test your proclamations.

We will surely test you until We ascertain those of you who wage jihad and those who are steadfast, and We shall appraise your record.

And We will most certainly try you so that We may mark out those among you who strive hard (in God’s cause with their persons and their wealth), and those who are steadfast (on His Path and patient through adversities), and try your accounts (of deeds).

(Muslims!) We will put you to trial until We make manifest those among you who strive their utmost (in the cause of Allâh), and those who persevere in patience, and We will (entrust you with such tasks as may) bring to light your reported mettle (and inner merits).

English Literal

And We will test you until We know the struggling/defending for the faith from you, and the patient, and We test/ justify your news/information/knowledge.

And We shall indeed test you until We make known the warriors and the steadfast among you - and to test your proclamations.

Most certainly We will try you until We have discovered those among you who strive their hardest, and those who are steadfast, and will test your record.

We will certainly test you, until We know those among you who strive, and those who are steadfast, and We will test your reactions.

Tafsir jalalayn

And We will assuredly try you, We will assuredly test you by way of [commanding you to participate in] the struggle and in other ways, until We know, with knowledge outwardly manifested, those of you who struggle [for God's cause] and those who are steadfast, in [adhering to] the struggle and in other ways, and We will appraise, We will reveal, your record, in terms of [whether you acted with] obedience or disobedience in what concerns the struggle (all three verbs may be read with the [third person singular] y' or with the [first person plural] nn).

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُمْ

And We will surely try you,

meaning, `We will surely test you with commands and prohibitions.'

حَتَّى نَعْلَمَ الْمُجَاهِدِينَ مِنكُمْ وَالصَّابِرِينَ

وَنَبْلُوَ أَخْبَارَكُمْ



until We know those who strive among you and the patient, and We will put to a test all your affairs.

There is absolutely no doubt that Allah's knowledge precedes the occurrence of all events.

In this Ayah, "until We know" means `until We know of its occurrence.' This is why Ibn Abbas said in regard to this and similar texts,

"Except so that We may know, means, so that We may see.
