Wa law nashaaa'u la-arainaakahum fala 'araftahum bi seemaahum; wa lata'rifan nahum fee lahnil qawl; wallaahu ya'lamu a'maalakum (QS. Muḥammad:30)

English / Sahih Translation:

And if We willed, We could show them to you, and you would know them by their mark; but you will surely know them by the tone of [their] speech. And Allah knows your deeds. (QS. Muhammad, ayah 30)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

Had We willed, We would have shown them to you (by identifying each one of them,) so as you would definitely recognize them by their features. However, you will recognize them by the tone of (their) speech. And Allah knows (all) your deeds.

Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

Had We willed, We could have truly shown them to you ˹O Prophet˺, and you would have certainly recognized them by their appearance. But you will surely recognize them by their tone of speech. And Allah ˹fully˺ knows your doings ˹O people˺.

Ruwwad Translation Center

If We willed, We could show them to you [O Prophet], so you would recognize them by their faces, but you will surely recognize them by the manner of their speech. And Allah knows all what you do.

A. J. Arberry

Did We will, We would show them to thee, then thou wouldst know them by their mark; and thou shalt certainly know them in the twisting of their speech; and God knows your deeds.

Abdul Haleem

We could even point them out to you [Prophet] if We wished, and then you could identify them by their marks, but you will know them anyway by the tone of their speech. God knows everything you [people] do.

Abdul Majid Daryabadi

And if We willed, We would surely shew them Unto thee, so that thou shouldst surely know them by their marks. And thou shalt surely know them by the mode of their speech. And Allah knoweth your works.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Had We so wiled, We could have shown them up to thee, and thou shouldst have known them by their marks; but surely thou wilt know them by the tone of their speech! And Allah knows all that ye do.

Abul Ala Maududi

If We were to so will, We could have shown them to you so that you would recognise them by their faces, and you would certainly know them by the manner of their speech. Allah knows all your deeds.

Ahmed Ali

Had We pleased We could have shown them to you that you could know them by their marks, and recognise them from the way they twist their words. Yet God knows all your deeds.

Ahmed Raza Khan

And if We will, We can show them to you so that you may recognise them by their faces; and you will surely recognise them by the way they talk; and Allah knows your deeds.

Ali Quli Qarai

If We wish, We will show them to you so that you recognize them by their mark. Yet you will recognize them by their tone of speech, and Allah knows your deeds.

Ali Ünal

Had We so willed, We would have shown them to you, and you would have known them by their marks (visible on their faces). But you certainly know them by the false tone and rhythm of their speech. God knows (O humankind) your deeds (and why and how you do them).

Amatul Rahman Omar

Indeed, if We so will We could show them to you so that you would know them by their appearance, yet you shall of course recognise them from the tenor of (their) speech. (Allâh knows their empty words as) He knows your (solid) deeds.

English Literal

And if We will/want, We would have shown them to you, so you would have known them by their marks/identifications/expressions, and you will know them in the word`s/opinion and belief`s or grammatical mistakes/intonement , and God knows your deeds.374

Faridul Haque

And if We will, We can show them to you so that you may recognise them by their faces; and you will surely recognise them by the way they talk; and Allah knows your deeds.

Hamid S. Aziz

And if We willed We could have made you (Muhammad) know them so that you would certainly have recognised them by their marks. And you shall certainly recognize them by the intent (tone) of their speech; and Allah knows your deeds.

Hilali & Khan

Had We willed, We could have shown them to you, and you should have known them by their marks, but surely, you will know them by the tone of their speech! And Allah knows all your deeds.

Maulana Mohammad Ali

Mohammad Habib Shakir

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

And if We would, We could show them unto thee (Muhammad) so that thou shouldst know them surely by their marks. And thou shalt know them by the burden of their talk. And Allah knoweth your deeds.

Tafsir jalalayn

And if We will, We could show them to you, We could have pointed them out to you (the lm is repeated in [the following, fa-la-`araftahum]), then you would recognise them by their mark. And you will certainly recognise them (wa-la-ta`rifannahum; the ww is for an omitted oath, and what follows it [f lahni'l-qawl] is its response) by [their] tone of speech, that is to say, [by] the meaning thereof when they speak in your presence, alluding [as they do] to what amounts to a scathing attack upon the Muslims; and God knows your deeds.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَلَوْ نَشَاء لَاَرَيْنَاكَهُمْ فَلَعَرَفْتَهُم بِسِيمَاهُمْ

Had We so willed, We could have shown them clearly to you, so that you would know them by their marks.

Allah is telling His Messenger, "Had We willed, O Muhammad, We would have shown you the specific individuals who are hypocrites, so that you would plainly know them."

However, Allah did not do that in regard to all of the hypocrites. He conceals His creation, lets their affairs run according to apparent purity, and leaves the inner secrets to the One Who is well aware of them.

Allah then adds,

وَلَتَعْرِفَنَّهُمْ فِي لَحْنِ الْقَوْلِ

But you will know them by the tone of their speech!

which means, `you will know them by their speech that reveals their intentions.'

A person declares his association through the context and meaning of his words -- as the Commander of the faithful Uthman bin Affan, may Allah be pleased with him, said,

"Never would one conceal a secret but Allah will expose it by the look on his face and the uncontrolled words of his tongue."

وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ أَعْمَالَكُمْ

And Allah knows (all) your deeds.

Allah then says
