Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Ahqaf Verse 24
Al-Ahqaf [46]: 24 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer
فَلَمَّا رَاَوْهُ عَارِضًا مُّسْتَقْبِلَ اَوْدِيَتِهِمْ قَالُوْا هٰذَا عَارِضٌ مُّمْطِرُنَا ۗبَلْ هُوَ مَا اسْتَعْجَلْتُمْ بِهٖ ۗرِيْحٌ فِيْهَا عَذَابٌ اَلِيْمٌۙ (الأحقاف : ٤٦)

Transliteration:
Falammaa ra awhu 'aaridam mustaqbila awdiyatihim qaaloo haazaa 'aaridum mumtirunaa; bal huwa masta'jaltum bihee reehun feehaa 'azaabun aleem(QS. al-ʾAḥq̈āf:24)
English / Sahih Translation:
And when they saw it as a cloud approaching their valleys, they said, "This is a cloud bringing us rain!" Rather, it is that for which you were impatient: a wind, within it a painful punishment, (QS. Al-Ahqaf, ayah 24)

So, when they saw it as a cloud proceeding towards their valleys, they said, “This is a cloud that will bring us rain.” No, it is the very thing you asked to hasten up - a wind in which there is a painful punishment,

English Literal
So when they saw/understood it an obstructing cloud approaching/coming (to) their valleys, they said: "That obstructing cloud (is) raining on us." No/rather it is what you hurried/hastened with it, a wind/smell in it (is) a painful torture.

Tafsir jalalayn
Then, when they saw it, that is, [when they saw] what chastisement [really] was, as a sudden cloud, a cloud that appeared [out of nowhere] on the horizon, heading towards their valleys, they said, `This is a cloud that will bring us rain!'. God, exalted be He, says; Nay, but it is what you sought to hasten, of the chastisement -- a hurricane (rhun substitutes for m, `what') containing a painful chastisement,
Tafseer Ibn Kathir
فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهُ عَارِضًا مُّسْتَقْبِلَ أَوْدِيَتِهِمْ
Then, when they saw it as a dense cloud approaching their valleys,
meaning, when they saw the punishment coming towards them, they thought it to be clouds full of rain. That made them happy and joyful, because they had a drought and needed rain.
قَالُوا هَذَا عَارِضٌ مُّمْطِرُنَا
they said;"This is a cloud bringing us rain!"
Allah then said,
بَلْ هُوَ مَا اسْتَعْجَلْتُم بِهِ رِيحٌ فِيهَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
Nay, but it is that which you were asking to be hastened -- a wind wherein is a painful torment!
meaning, this is the torment that you called for saying, "Bring to us what you promise us if you should be of the truthful.
