Al-Ahqaf [46]: 18 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

اُولٰۤىِٕكَ الَّذِيْنَ حَقَّ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقَوْلُ فِيْٓ اُمَمٍ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ مِّنَ الْجِنِّ وَالْاِنْسِ ۗاِنَّهُمْ كَانُوْا خٰسِرِيْنَ (الأحقاف : ٤٦)

ulāika
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ
Those
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
(are) the ones
ḥaqqa
حَقَّ
(has) proved true

وَٱلْإِنسِۖ

إِنَّهُمْ
Indeed, they
kānū
كَانُوا۟
are
khāsirīna
خَٰسِرِينَ
(the) losers

Transliteration:

Ulaaa'ikal lazeena haqqa 'alaihimul qawlu feee umamin qad khalat min qablihim minal jinni wal insi innahum kaanoo khaasireen (QS. al-ʾAḥq̈āf:18)

English / Sahih Translation:

Those are the ones upon whom the word [i.e., decree] has come into effect, [who will be] among nations which had passed on before them of jinn and men. Indeed, they [all] were losers. (QS. Al-Ahqaf, ayah 18)

Such are the people on whom the word (of punishment) has come true along with the communities of the Jinn and the humans that have passed before them. Surely they were losers.

These are the ones against whom the fate of earlier communities of jinn and humans has been justified, ˹for˺ they were truly losers.

It is against such that Allah's sentence (of punishment) has become due. They will join the communities of humans and jinn that have preceded them. Verily all of them will court utter loss.

They are those on whom the sentence of God would be justified as on communities of jinns and men before them. They will surely perish.

It is these upon whom the Word has proved true, among the nations that passed away before them, of jinns and men; indeed they were losers.

Such are the ones against whom the word has become due, along with the nations of jinn and humans that have passed away before them. They were the losers.

Such are they upon whom the word (of God’s punishment) is rightly due (as included) among the (similar) communities of jinn and humankind before them. Surely they are the ones ruined in loss.

Such are the people against whom the sentence of punishment becomes due along with the communities of the jinn (- houghty) and (ordinary) people that preceded them. Of course, they were the losers.

English Literal

Those are those who the word/opinion and belief became correct/true in nations (that) had passed/expired from before them from the Jinns and the human/mankind, that they truly were losers .

And he who says to his parents: Fie on you! Do you threaten me that I shall be brought forth, when generations have passed away before me? And they both call for Allah’s aid: Woe to thee! Believe; surely the promise of Allah is true. But he says: This is nothing but stories of the ancients.

It is against such as these that the word of God has proved true, along with all the communities that went before them, jinns and humans: surely they are losers.

Those are they upon whom the sentence is justified, among the communities that have passed away before them, of jinn and humans. They are truly losers.

Tafsir jalalayn

Such are the ones against whom the Word, of chastisement, is due, is necessary, concerning communities of jinn and humans that have passed away before them. Truly they are losers.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

They are those against whom the Word (of torment) has justified among the previous generations of Jinn and mankind that have passed away. Verily, they are ever the losers.

This indicates that all such people will be among their likes and their peers among the disbelievers, who will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection.

Allah's saying,
أُوْلَيِكَ
(Those are) after He said,
وَالَّذِى قَالَ
(But he who says) confirms what we have mentioned above that the latter is a general description of a type of people including all those who fall under that description.

Al-Hasan and Qatadah both said,

"This applies to the disbelieving, sinful person who is undutiful to his parents and who denies resurrection."
