Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Jathiyah Verse 32

Al-Jathiyah [45]: 32 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَاِذَا قِيْلَ اِنَّ وَعْدَ اللّٰهِ حَقٌّ وَّالسَّاعَةُ لَا رَيْبَ فِيْهَا قُلْتُمْ مَّا نَدْرِيْ مَا السَّاعَةُۙ اِنْ نَّظُنُّ اِلَّا ظَنًّا وَّمَا نَحْنُ بِمُسْتَيْقِنِيْنَ (الجاثية : ٤٥)

wa-idhā
وَإِذَا
And when

Transliteration:

Wa izaa qeela inna wa'dallaahi haqqunw was Saa'atu laa raiba feehaa qultum maa nadree mas Saa'atu in nazunnu illaa zannanw wa maa nahnu bimustaiqineen (QS. al-Jāthiyah:32)

English / Sahih Translation:

And when it was said, 'Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth and the Hour [is coming] – no doubt about it,' you said, 'We know not what is the Hour. We assume only assumption, and we are not convinced.'" (QS. Al-Jathiyah, ayah 32)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

and when it was said to you that Allah’s promise is true and there is no doubt in the (arrival of the) Hour, you used to say, ‘We do not know what the Hour is. We do not think (about it) but as an assumption, and we are not sure.’”

And whenever it was said ˹to you˺, ‘Surely Allah’s promise ˹of judgment˺ is true and there is no doubt about the Hour,’ you said ˹mockingly˺, ‘We do not know what the Hour is! We think it is no more than speculation, and we are not convinced ˹that it will ever come˺.’”

"And when it was said that the promise of Allah was true, and that the Hour- there was no doubt about its (coming), ye used to say, 'We know not what is the hour; we only think it is an idea, and we have no firm assurance.'"

And when it was said to them: “Surely Allah's promise is true, and there is no doubt regarding the Hour of Resurrection,” you were wont to say: “We do not know what the Hour (of Resurrection) is. We are simply making conjectures and are not at all certain.”

Whenever it was said: 'God's promise is certainly true, and there is no doubt about the Hour,' you replied: 'We know not what the Hour is. We have only a vague idea, but are not certain.'

“And when it was said, ‘Indeed Allah’s promise is true and there is no doubt regarding the Last Day”, you used to say, ‘We do not know what the Last Day is – we think it is nothing except an imagination, and we are not convinced.’”

When it was said, ‘‘Allah’s promise is indeed true, and there is no doubt about the Hour,’’ you said, ‘‘We do not know what the Hour is. We know nothing beyond conjectures, and we do not possess any certainty.’’ ’

"When it was proclaimed that God’s promise is true and that there is no doubt about the coming of the Last Hour, you said: ‘We can make no sense of the Last Hour; we think it is only a supposition. We are by no means convinced (of it)’."

`And when it was said (to you), "The promise of Allâh is of course true and the Hour (of Resurrection) there is no doubt about it," you said, "We do not know what the Hour may be, we have only a faint notion about it and we are, by no means, convinced (of its certainty)".´

English Literal

And if (it) was said: "That truly God`s promise (is) truth , and the Hour/Resurrection (there is) no doubt/suspicion in it." You said: "We do not know what (is) the Hour/Resurrection , that we assume/suppose except thought/assumption , and we (are) not with being sure/certain."

“And when it was said, ‘Indeed Allah’s promise is true and there is no doubt regarding the Last Day”, you used to say, ‘We do not know what the Last Day is - we think it is nothing except an imagination, and we are not convinced.’ ”

And when it was said: "Verily, Allah's promise is the truth, and there is no doubt about the coming of the Hour," you said: "We know not what is the Hour: we do not think it but conjecture, and we have no firm convincing belief (therein)."

When it was said to you, "God's promise is true: there is no doubt about the Hour," did you not reply, 'We do not know what the Hour is. We think it to be nothing but a conjecture, and we are not convinced'"

And when it was said, “The promise of God is true, and of the Hour there is no doubt,” you said, “We do not know what the Hour is; we think it is only speculation; we are not convinced.”

Tafsir jalalayn

And when it was said, to you, O disbelievers; "God's promise, of resurrection, is indeed true, and there is no doubt about the Hour", (read al-s`atu or al-s`ata) you said, "We do not know what the Hour is. We only make conjectures (al-Mubarrad said that this actually [means] in nahnu ill nazunnu zannan) and we are by no means certain" ', that it will come to pass.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَإِذَا قِيلَ إِنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَالسَّاعَةُ لَاإ رَيْبَ فِيهَا

And when it was said;

"Verily, Allah's promise is the truth, and there is no doubt about the coming of the Hour,"

`when the believers said these words to you;'

قُلْتُم مَّا نَدْرِي مَا السَّاعَةُ

you said;"We know not what is the Hour..."

`we do not recognize what you are talking about,'

إِن نَّظُنُّ إِلاَّ ظَنًّا

we do not think it but conjecture,

`we only remotely think that it might come,'

وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُسْتَيْقِنِينَ



and we have no firm convincing belief (therein).

`we are not sure of it.'

Allah said
