Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Jathiyah Verse 18

Mufti Taqi Usmani

Then We have put you on a certain way of the Matter (i.e. the religion); so follow it, and do not follow the desires of those who do not know.

Now We have set you ˹O Prophet˺ on the ˹clear˺ Way of faith. So follow it, and do not follow the desires of those who do not know ˹the truth˺.

Then We put you [O Prophet] on a clear way of the religion; so follow it and do not follow the desires of those who have no knowledge.

And then We set you, (O Prophet), on a clear high road in religious matters. So follow that and do not follow the desires of those who do not know.

We have put you on the right way in the matter (of divine law). So follow it, and do not follow the wishes of those who are ignorant.

We then placed you (O dear prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) upon the clear path of the command, therefore continue following it and do not listen to the desires of the ignorant.

Thereafter (in this conclusive Revelation) We have set you on a way of life (Shari‘ah) based on the Religion, so follow it and do not follow the lusts and fancies of those who do not know (the Divine Guidance).

English Literal

Then We made/put you on God`s decreed way of life from the order/command so follow it, and do not follow (the) self attractions for desires (of) those who do not know.

Then We have put you (O Muhammad SAW) on a plain way of (Our) commandment [like the one which We commanded Our Messengers before you (i.e. legal ways and laws of the Islamic Monotheism)]. And we gave them clear arguments in the Affair. So they differed not until after knowledge had come to them, out of envy among themselves. Surely thy Lord will judge between them on the day of Resurrection concerning that wherein they differed.

Then We set you upon a pathway of faith, so follow it, and do not follow the inclinations of those who do not know.

Tafsir jalalayn

Then We set you, O Muhammad (s), upon a [clear] course, [a clear] way, of the commandment, the commandment of religion; so follow it, and do not follow the desires of those who do not know, in worshipping other than God.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَاكَ عَلَى شَرِيعَةٍ مِّنَ الاَْمْرِ فَاتَّبِعْهَا

Then We have put you on a (legal) way of commandment. So follow you that.

`follow what was revealed to you from your Lord, O Muhammad, there is no true deity except Him, and turn away from the idolators.'

Allah said,

وَلَا تَتَّبِعْ أَهْوَاء الَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
