Al-Qur'an Surah Az-Zukhruf Verse 48

Az-Zukhruf [43]: 48 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَمَا نُرِيْهِمْ مِّنْ اٰيَةٍ اِلَّا هِيَ اَكْبَرُ مِنْ اُخْتِهَاۗ وَاَخَذْنٰهُمْ بِالْعَذَابِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُوْنَ (الزخرف : ٤٣)

نُرِيهِم
We showed them

ءَايَةٍ
a Sign
illā
إِلَّا
but
hiya
هِىَ

أَكْبَرُ

أُخْتِهَاۖ

wa-akhadhnāhum
وَأَخَذْنَٰهُم
and We seized them
bil-ʿadhābi
بِٱلْعَذَابِ
with the punishment
laʿallahum
لَعَلَّهُمْ
so that they may
yarjiʿūna
يَرْجِعُونَ
return

Transliteration:

Wa maa nureehim min aayatin illaa hiya akbaru min ukhtihaa wa akhaznaahum bil'azaabi la'allahum yarji'oon (QS. az-Zukhruf:48)

English / Sahih Translation:

And We showed them not a sign except that it was greater than its sister, and We seized them with affliction that perhaps they might return [to faith]. (QS. Az-Zukhruf, ayah 48)

And We did not show them a sign, but it used to be greater than the one that preceded it. And We seized them with punishment, so that they may return.

although every sign We showed them was greater than the one before.[[ i.e., the hand and the staff (see {20:17}-22).]] Ultimately, We seized them with torments so that they might return ˹to the Right Path˺.[[ The torments were: famine, shortage of crops, floods, locusts, lice, frogs, and blood (see {7:130}-133).]]

And We do not show them/make them understand from a verse/evidence/sign except (that) it is greater than its sister, and We took/punished them with the torture, maybe/perhaps they return.

Tafsir jalalayn

And We never showed them a sign, from among the signs of chastisement, such as the flood, which was when the waters [of the Nile] penetrated their dwellings and for seven days rose as high as their throats as they sat, or [the chastisement of] the locusts, but it was greater than the one before it, the one immediately preceding it. And We seized them with chastisement, that perhaps they might recant, their disbelief.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَمَا نُرِيهِم مِّنْ ايَةٍ إِلاَّ هِيَ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ أُخْتِهَا

And not an Ayah We showed them but it was greater than its fellow preceding it,

but despite that they would not give up their sin, misguidance, ignorance and confusion.

وَأَخَذْنَاهُم بِالْعَذَابِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ



and We seized them with torment, in order that they might turn.
