Al-Qur'an Surah Az-Zukhruf Verse 38

until when such a person will come to us, he will say (to the devil), “Would that there were the distance of East and West between me and you, because you were the worst companion.”

English Literal

Until if he came to Us, he said: "Oh if only between me and between you (are) the two sun rises`/easts` far distances, so how bad (is) the companion ?"

When such a person comes to Us, he will say [to his comrade], "If only you had been as far away from me as east is from west. What an evil comrade!"

Until, when He comes to Us, he will say, “If only there were between me and you the distance of the two Easts.” What an evil companion!

Tafsir jalalayn

until when he comes to Us, such a blind one, together with his companion, on the Day of Resurrection, he says, to him; `O (y is for calling attention) would that there were between me and you the distance of the two easts!', that is to say, like the distance between the east and the west, What an evil companion then!, you are for me. God, exalted be He, says;

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

حَتَّى إِذَا جَاءنَا

And verily, they hinder them from the path, but they think that they are guided aright! Until, when he comes to Us,

meaning, for this person who willfully neglects true guidance, We send to him a Shaytan to lead him astray and show him the path to Hell. When he comes before Allah on the Day of Resurrection, he will complain about the Shaytan who was appointed to accompany him.

Some of them recited it;
حَتْى إِذَا جَاءنَا
(Till, when they both come to Us), referring to the companion Shaytan and the one whom he accompanies.

قَالَ يَا لَيْتَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكَ بُعْدَ الْمَشْرِقَيْنِ فَبِيْسَ الْقَرِينُ



he says, "Would that between me and you were the distance of the two easts -- a worst companion (indeed)!"

Then Allah says;

وَلَن يَنفَعَكُمُ الْيَوْمَ إِذ ظَّلَمْتُمْ أَنَّكُمْ فِي الْعَذَابِ مُشْتَرِكُونَ
