Al-Qur'an Surah Az-Zukhruf Verse 16

Az-Zukhruf [43]: 16 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

اَمِ اتَّخَذَ مِمَّا يَخْلُقُ بَنٰتٍ وَّاَصْفٰىكُمْ بِالْبَنِيْنَ ۗ (الزخرف : ٤٣)

ٱتَّخَذَ
has He taken

مِمَّا
of what
yakhluqu
يَخْلُقُ
He has created
banātin
بَنَاتٍ
daughters
wa-aṣfākum
وَأَصْفَىٰكُم
and He has chosen (for) you
bil-banīna
بِٱلْبَنِينَ
sons

Transliteration:

Amit takhaza mimmaa yakhluqu banaatinw wa asfaakum bilbaneen (QS. az-Zukhruf:16)

English / Sahih Translation:

Or has He taken, out of what He has created, daughters and chosen you for [having] sons? (QS. Az-Zukhruf, ayah 16)

Or (am has the significance of the hamza of denial; the `saying' is implied, in other words, a-taqlna, `[or] do you say that ...') He has adopted, from all that He has created, daughters, for Himself, and preferred you, privileged you, with sons? -- that which is the necessary inference from what you claim and which by itself is an abomination.

Or has He taken daughters out of what He has created, and He has selected for you sons?

This is a denunciation of them in the strongest terms, as He goes on to say;

وَإِذَا بُشِّرَ أَحَدُهُم بِمَا ضَرَبَ لِلرَّحْمَنِ مَثَلًإ ظَلَّ وَجْهُهُ مُسْوَدًّا وَهُوَ كَظِيمٌ
