Al-Qur'an Surah Ash-Shuraa Verse 9

Is it that they have adopted patrons instead of Him? So, it is Allah who is the Patron, and He gives life to the dead, and He is Powerful to do every thing.

Have they taken to themselves (other) patrons apart from Him (the only God)? But the (real) Patron is Allâh alone. He alone raises the dead to life and He is the Possessor of every power over every desired thing.

English Literal

Or they took from other than Him guardians/allies , so God, He is the guardian/ally , and He revives/makes alive the deads, and He is on every thing capable/able.

Tafsir jalalayn

Or have they taken, idols [as], guardians besides Him? (am, `or', is disjunctive, functioning with the sense of bal, `nay, but', the one used to denote a shift [in the subject matter]; the hamza is for denial, in other words `those who are taken' [as guardians] are not [in fact] guardians [of anything]). But God, He [alone] is the Guardian, in other words, then One who helps believers (the f' [of fa'Llhu] is merely for coordination) and He revives the dead, and He has power over all things.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Allah is the Protector, Ruler and Creator

Allah says,

أَمِ اتَّخَذُوا مِن دُونِهِ أَوْلِيَاء

فَاللَّهُ هُوَ الْوَلِيُّ وَهُوَ يُحْيِي المَوْتَى

وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ



Or have they taken protecting friends besides Him? But Allah --- He Alone is the protector. And He Who gives life to the dead, and He is Able to do all things.

Here Allah denounces the idolators for taking other gods instead of Allah, and declares that He is the True God, and it is not right to worship anyone except Him Alone. He is the One Who is able to bring the dead back to life and He is Able to do all things.

Then He says
