Al-Qur'an Surah Ash-Shuraa Verse 37

Ash-Shuraa [42]: 37 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَالَّذِيْنَ يَجْتَنِبُوْنَ كَبٰۤىِٕرَ الْاِثْمِ وَالْفَوَاحِشَ وَاِذَا مَا غَضِبُوْا هُمْ يَغْفِرُوْنَ ۚ (الشورى : ٤٢)

wa-alladhīna
وَٱلَّذِينَ
And those who
yajtanibūna
يَجْتَنِبُونَ
avoid
kabāira
كَبَٰٓئِرَ
(the) greater
l-ith'mi
ٱلْإِثْمِ
sins
wal-fawāḥisha
وَٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ
and the immoralities
wa-idhā
وَإِذَا
and when
مَا
and when
ghaḍibū
غَضِبُوا۟
they are angry
hum
هُمْ
they
yaghfirūna
يَغْفِرُونَ
forgive

Transliteration:

Wallazeena yajtaniboona kabaaa'iral ismi wal fawaa hisha wa izaa maa ghadiboo hum yaghfiroon (QS. aš-Šūrā:37)

English / Sahih Translation:

And those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, and when they are angry, they forgive, (QS. Ash-Shuraa, ayah 37)

Tafsir jalalayn

and those who avoid grave sins and indecencies, those [acts] that require [the implementing of] the prescribed legal punishments (hudd) ([the supplement above is] an example of supplementing the part to the whole) and [who], when they are angry, forgive, they let it pass;

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَالَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَايِرَ الاْاِثْمِ وَالْفَوَاحِشَ

And those who shun the greater sins, and Al-Fawahish,

We have already discussed sin and Al-Fawahish in Surah Al-A`raf.

وَإِذَا مَا غَضِبُوا هُمْ يَغْفِرُونَ



and when they are angry, they forgive.

means, their nature dictates that they should forgive people and be tolerant. Vengeance is not in their nature.

It was reported in the Sahih that the Messenger of Allah never took revenge for his own sake, only when the sacred Laws of Allah were violated
