Al-Qur'an Surah Ash-Shuraa Verse 36

Ash-Shuraa [42]: 36 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

فَمَآ اُوْتِيْتُمْ مِّنْ شَيْءٍ فَمَتَاعُ الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَا ۚوَمَا عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ خَيْرٌ وَّاَبْقٰى لِلَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَعَلٰى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُوْنَۚ (الشورى : ٤٢)

famā
فَمَآ
So whatever
ūtītum
أُوتِيتُم
you are given
min
مِّن
of
shayin
شَىْءٍ
a thing
famatāʿu
فَمَتَٰعُ
(is) but a passing enjoyment
l-ḥayati
ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ
(for) the life
l-dun'yā
ٱلدُّنْيَاۖ
(of) the world
wamā
وَمَا
But what
ʿinda
عِندَ
(is) with
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
khayrun
خَيْرٌ
(is) better
wa-abqā
وَأَبْقَىٰ
and more lasting
lilladhīna
لِلَّذِينَ
for those who
āmanū
ءَامَنُوا۟
believe
waʿalā
وَعَلَىٰ
and upon
rabbihim
رَبِّهِمْ
their Lord
yatawakkalūna
يَتَوَكَّلُونَ
put (their) trust

Transliteration:

Famaa ooteetum min shai'in famataa'ul hayaatid dunyaa wa maa 'indal laahi khairunw wa abqaa lillazeena aamanoo wa 'alaa Rabbihim yatawakkaloon (QS. aš-Šūrā:36)

English / Sahih Translation:

So whatever thing you have been given – it is but [for] enjoyment of the worldly life. But what is with Allah is better and more lasting for those who have believed and upon their Lord rely (QS. Ash-Shuraa, ayah 36)

So, whatever thing has been given to you is an enjoyment of the worldly life. And that which is with Allah is much better, and much more durable for those who believe and place their trust in Allah,

English Literal

So what you were given from a thing so (it is) long life/enjoyment (of) the life the present/worldly life, and what (is) at God (is) better and more lasting (everlasting) to those who believed and on their Lord, they rely/depend .

Tafsir jalalayn

So whatever you -- [this is] an address is to believers and others -- have been given, of the luxuries of this world, is [but] the enjoyment of the life of this world, enjoyed for the duration of it but then perishes. But what is with God, of reward, is better and more lasting for those who believe and put their trust in their Lord (li'lladhna man wa-`al rabbihim yatawakkalna, is supplemented by [the following clause]),

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

The Attributes of Those Who deserve that which is with Allah

Here Allah points out the insignificance of this worldly life and its transient adornments and luxuries.

فَمَا أُوتِيتُم مِّن شَيْءٍ فَمَتَاعُ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا

So whatever you have been given is but (a passing) enjoyment for this worldly life.

means, no matter what you achieve and amass, do not be deceived by it, for it is only the enjoyment of this life, which is the lower, transient realm that will undoubtedly come to an end.

وَمَا عِندَ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَى

but that which is with Allah is better and more lasting,

means, the reward of Allah is better than this world, and it will last forever, so do not give preference to that which is transient over that which is lasting.

Allah says;

لِلَّذِينَ امَنُوا

for those who believe,

means, for those who are patient in forgoing the pleasures of this world,

وَعَلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ



and put their trust in their Lord.

means, so that He will help them to be patient in doing what is obligatory and avoiding what is forbidden.

Then Allah says
