Al-Qur'an Surah Fussilat Verse 48

Fussilat [41]: 48 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَضَلَّ عَنْهُمْ مَّا كَانُوْا يَدْعُوْنَ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَظَنُّوْا مَا لَهُمْ مِّنْ مَّحِيْصٍ (فصلت : ٤١)

waḍalla
وَضَلَّ
And lost

Transliteration:

Wa dalla 'anhum maa kaanoo yad'oona min qablu wa zannoo maa lahum mim mahees (QS. Fuṣṣilat:48)

English / Sahih Translation:

And lost from them will be those they were invoking before, and they will be certain that they have no place of escape. (QS. Fussilat, ayah 48)

And what they were calling from before misguided/lost from them, and they thought/assumed nothing from (an) escape/diversion (is) for them (there is no escape for them).

Tafsir jalalayn

And what they used to call on, [what they used] to worship, before, in this world, of idols, has forsaken them and they suppose, they will be certain, that there is no refuge for them, no escape from the chastisement (the negation in both instances comments on the operation [implied in the nouns of actions; also the negation stands in place of the direct objects in both instances).

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَضَلَّ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا يَدْعُونَ مِن قَبْلُ

And those whom they used to invoke before (in this world) shall disappear from them,

means, they will go away, and will be of no benefit to them.

وَظَنُّوا مَا لَهُم مِّن مَّحِيصٍ



and they will perceive that they have no place of refuge.

means, they will have no way of escaping from the punishment of Allah.

This is like the Ayah;

وَرَأَى الْمُجْرِمُونَ النَّارَ فَظَنُّواْ أَنَّهُمْ مُّوَاقِعُوهَا وَلَمْ يَجِدُواْ عَنْهَا مَصْرِفًا

And the criminals shall see the Fire and apprehend that they have to fall therein. And they will find no way of escape from there. (18;53
