Al-Qur'an Surah Fussilat Verse 24

Fussilat [41]: 24 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

فَاِنْ يَّصْبِرُوْا فَالنَّارُ مَثْوًى لَّهُمْ ۚوَاِنْ يَّسْتَعْتِبُوْا فَمَا هُمْ مِّنَ الْمُعْتَبِيْنَ (فصلت : ٤١)

fa-in
فَإِن
Then if
yaṣbirū
يَصْبِرُوا۟
they endure
fal-nāru
فَٱلنَّارُ
the Fire
mathwan
مَثْوًى
(is) an abode
lahum
لَّهُمْۖ
for them;
wa-in
وَإِن
and if
yastaʿtibū
يَسْتَعْتِبُوا۟
they ask for favor
famā
فَمَا
then not
hum
هُم
they
mina
مِّنَ
(will be) of
l-muʿ'tabīna
ٱلْمُعْتَبِينَ
those who receive favor

Transliteration:

Fa-iny yasbiroo fan Naaru maswal lahum wa iny-yasta'tiboo famaa hum minal mu'tabeen (QS. Fuṣṣilat:24)

English / Sahih Translation:

So [even] if they are patient, the Fire is a residence for them; and if they ask to appease [Allah], they will not be of those who are allowed to appease. (QS. Fussilat, ayah 24)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

Now, if they endure patiently, even then the Fire is their abode, and if they seek forgiveness, they are not among those (who could be) forgiven.

Even if they endure patiently, the Fire will ˹always˺ be their home. And if they ˹beg to˺ appease ˹their Lord˺, they will never be allowed to.

If, then, they have patience, the Fire will be a home for them! and if they beg to be received into favour, into favour will they not (then) be received.

In this state, whether they bear with patience (or not), Fire alone shall be their abode. And if they seek to make amends, they will not be allowed to do so.

Even if they are patient, their abode is Hell; and if they beg for favour, none will favour them.

Then if they are patient, even then the fire is their home; and if they plead, none will listen to their pleading.

Should they be patient, the Fire is their abode; and should they seek to propitiate [Allah], they will not be redeemed.

If they endure it (or do not endure it), still the Fire will be an everlasting dwelling for them. If they ask for favor (to be saved from it, or do not ask), still they are not of those who will be shown favor (and saved).

Amatul Rahman Omar

Now, if (in this state of theirs) they show patience (even then) the Fire is their resort. And if they ask to be allowed to approach the threshold (of God´s Throne) they will not be of those who are allowed to approach the threshold (to seek His forgiveness and mercy).

English Literal

So if they be patient so the fire (is a) residence/dwelling for them, and if they offer reconciliation , so they are not from the permitted to offer reconciliation .

Then if they are patient, even then the fire is their home; and if they plead, none will listen to their pleading.

Then though they are resigned, still the fire is their abode, and if they ask for favour, yet are they not of those unto whom favour can be shown.

Then, if they bear the torment patiently, then the Fire is the home for them, and if they seek to please Allah, yet they are not of those who will ever be allowed to please Allah.

Even if they are patient, the Fire will still be their homes. And if they pray to be allowed to make amends, they will not be allowed to do so.

Talal Itani

If they endure patiently, the Fire will be their residence; and if they make up excuses, they will not be pardoned.

Tafsir jalalayn

So if they endure, the chastisement, the Fire will [still] be their abode; and if they seek reconciliation, if they seek the satisfaction [of God], then they will not be among the reconciled, those deemed satisfactory [by God].

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Then, if they bear the torment patiently, then the Fire is the home for them, and if they seek to please Allah, yet they are not of those who will ever be allowed to please Allah.

means, whether they bear it patiently or not, they are in the Fire and they will have no escape or way out from it, and even if they try to please Allah and offer excuses, nothing of that will be accepted from them.

Ibn Jarir said,

"The meaning of the Ayah,
وَإِن يَسْتَعْتِبُوا
(and if they seek to please Allah), is;

They will ask to go back to this world, but this plea will not be answered.

This is like the Ayah;

قَالُواْ رَبَّنَا غَلَبَتْ عَلَيْنَا شِقْوَتُنَا وَكُنَّا قَوْماً ضَألِّينَ

رَبَّنَأ أَخْرِجْنَا مِنْهَا فَإِنْ عُدْنَا فَإِنَّا ظَـلِمُونَ

قَالَ اخْسَيُواْ فِيهَا وَلَا تُكَلِّمُونِ

They will say;"Our Lord! Our wretchedness overcame us, and we were (an) erring people.

Our Lord! Bring us out of this. If ever we return (to evil), then indeed we shall be wrongdoers."

He will say;"Remain you in it with ignominy! And speak you not to Me!" (23;106-108)
