Al-Qur'an Surah Fussilat Verse 22

Fussilat [41]: 22 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَمَا كُنْتُمْ تَسْتَتِرُوْنَ اَنْ يَّشْهَدَ عَلَيْكُمْ سَمْعُكُمْ وَلَآ اَبْصَارُكُمْ وَلَا جُلُوْدُكُمْ وَلٰكِنْ ظَنَنْتُمْ اَنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يَعْلَمُ كَثِيْرًا مِّمَّا تَعْمَلُوْنَ (فصلت : ٤١)

wamā

Transliteration:

Wa maa kuntum tastatiroona ai-yashhada 'alaikum sam'ukum wa laaa absaarukum wa laa juloodukum wa laakin zanantum annal laaha laa ya'lamu kaseeram mimmaa ta'maloon (QS. Fuṣṣilat:22)

English / Sahih Translation:

And you were not covering [i.e., protecting] yourselves, lest your hearing testify against you or your sight or your skins, but you assumed that Allah does not know much of what you do. (QS. Fussilat, ayah 22)

And you had not been hiding your selves (when committing sins) from your ears and your eyes and your skins that would bear witness against you, but you thought that Allah did not know much of what you did.

And you were not covering/hiding yourselves that (E) your hearing/listening , and nor your eye sights/understanding, and nor your skins witnesses/testifies on (against) you, and but you thought/assumed that (E) God does not know much from what you made/do.

You were unable to hide yourselves from your hearing, and your sight, and your skins, to prevent them from testifying against you, and you imagined that God was unaware of much of what you do.

Tafsir jalalayn

And you did not use to conceal yourselves, when you used to commit lewd acts, lest your hearing or your eyes or your skins should bear witness against you, because you were never certain about [the truth of] resurrection; but you thought, when you used to conceal yourselves, that God did not know most of what you did.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَمَا كُنتُمْ تَسْتَتِرُونَ أَنْ يَشْهَدَ عَلَيْكُمْ سَمْعُكُمْ وَلَا أَبْصَارُكُمْ وَلَا جُلُودُكُمْ

And you have not been hiding yourselves (in the world), lest your ears and your eyes and your skins should testify against you;

means, their organs and skins will say to them, when they blame them for testifying against them, `you did not hide from us what you used to do, on the contrary, you openly committed disbelief and sin, and you claimed that you did not care, because you did not believe that Allah knew about all your deeds.'

Allah says;

وَلَكِن ظَنَنتُمْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَعْلَمُ كَثِيرًا مِّمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ
