Al-Qur'an Surah Ghafir Verse 58

Ghafir [40]: 58 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَمَا يَسْتَوِى الْاَعْمٰى وَالْبَصِيْرُ ەۙ وَالَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ وَلَا الْمُسِيْۤئُ ۗقَلِيْلًا مَّا تَتَذَكَّرُوْنَ (غافر : ٤٠)

wamā
وَمَا
And not
yastawī
يَسْتَوِى
are equal
l-aʿmā
ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ
the blind
wal-baṣīru
وَٱلْبَصِيرُ
and the seeing
wa-alladhīna
وَٱلَّذِينَ
and those who
āmanū
ءَامَنُوا۟
believe
waʿamilū
وَعَمِلُوا۟
and do
l-ṣāliḥāti
ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ
righteous deeds
walā
وَلَا
and not
l-musīu
ٱلْمُسِىٓءُۚ
the evildoer
qalīlan
قَلِيلًا
Little
مَّا
(is) what
tatadhakkarūna
تَتَذَكَّرُونَ
you take heed

Transliteration:

Wa maa yastawil a'maa walbaseeru wallazeena aamanoo wa 'amilus saalihaati wa lal museee'; qaleelam maa tatazakkaroon (QS. Ghāfir:58)

English / Sahih Translation:

And not equal are the blind and the seeing, nor are those who believe and do righteous deeds and the evildoer. Little do you remember. (QS. Ghafir, ayah 58)

The blind one and the sighted one are not equal, and those who believed and did good deeds and the evil ones are not (equal) either. Little you heed to the advice!

Tafsir jalalayn

And the blind one and the seer are not equal; nor are [they equal] those who believe and perform righteous deeds -- such a person being the virtuous one -- and the evildoer (wa-l'l-mus'u; l here is extra). Little do they reflect, [little] are they admonished (read yatadhakkarna, or [second person plural] tatadhakkarna, `do you reflect'), in other words, their reflections are very few.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

And not equal are the blind and those who see; nor are those who believe, and do righteous good deeds, and those who do evil. Little do you remember!

The blind man who cannot see anything is not the same as the sighted man who can see everything as far as his eyesight reaches -- there is a huge difference between them. By the same token, the righteous believers and the immoral disbelievers are not equal.

قَلِيلً مَّا تَتَذَكَّرُونَ
(Little do you remember!),

means, most of the people remember little
