Al-Qur'an Surah Ghafir Verse 52

Ghafir [40]: 52 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

يَوْمَ لَا يَنْفَعُ الظّٰلِمِيْنَ مَعْذِرَتُهُمْ وَلَهُمُ اللَّعْنَةُ وَلَهُمْ سُوْۤءُ الدَّارِ (غافر : ٤٠)

Transliteration:

Yawma laa yanfa'uz zaalimeena ma'ziratuhum wa lahumul la'natu wa lahum soooud daar (QS. Ghāfir:52)

English / Sahih Translation:

The Day their excuse will not benefit the wrongdoers, and they will have the curse, and they will have the worst home [i.e., Hell]. (QS. Ghafir, ayah 52)

a day when apology of the unjust will bring them no benefit, and on them shall be the curse, and for them will be the evil abode.

English Literal

A day/time, the unjust/oppressive, their apologies/excuses do not benefit (them), and for them (is) the curse/torture, and for them the house`s/home`s bad/evil/harm.

Tafsir jalalayn

the day when their excuses will not benefit (read l yanfa`u, or l tanfa`u) the evildoers, [even] if they were to offer them, and theirs will be the curse, in other words, the banishment from [God's] Mercy, and theirs will be the ills of the [ultimate] abode, in the Hereafter, meaning, the most severe of its chastisements.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ الظَّالِمِينَ مَعْذِرَتُهُمْ

The Day when their excuses will be of no profit to wrongdoers.

is referring to the same as;
وَيَوْمَ يَقُومُ الاَْشْهَادُ
(...the Day when the witnesses will stand forth).

Others read it with that meaning;

وَيَوْمَ يَقُومُ الاَْشْهَادُ


يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ الظَّالِمِينَ


And the Day the witnesses will stand forth, is a Day when there will be no profit to wrongdoers. (and the wrongdoers are the idolators).

مَعْذِرَتُهُمْ
(their excuses),

means, no excuse or ransom will be accepted from them.

وَلَهُمُ اللَّعْنَةُ

Theirs will be the curse,

means, they will be cast out far away from the mercy of Allah.

وَلَهُمْ سُوءُ الدَّارِ



and theirs will be the evil abode.

means, the Hell-fire,

as As-Suddi said, a terrible abode and dwelling place.
Indication that the Messenger and the Believers will prevail just as Musa and the Children of Israel prevailed
