(The Forgiver)

حٰمۤ ۚ ١

حمٓ
Ha Mim
Ha, Meem. (QS. [40] Ghafir: 1)
Tafsir
2

تَنْزِيْلُ الْكِتٰبِ مِنَ اللّٰهِ الْعَزِيْزِ الْعَلِيْمِۙ ٢

tanzīlu
تَنزِيلُ
(The) revelation
l-kitābi
ٱلْكِتَٰبِ
(of) the Book
mina
مِنَ
(is) from
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
l-ʿazīzi
ٱلْعَزِيزِ
the All-Mighty
l-ʿalīmi
ٱلْعَلِيمِ
the All-Knower
The revelation of the Book [i.e., the Quran] is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Knowing, (QS. [40] Ghafir: 2)
Tafsir
3

غَافِرِ الذَّنْۢبِ وَقَابِلِ التَّوْبِ شَدِيْدِ الْعِقَابِ ذِى الطَّوْلِۗ لَآ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ ۗاِلَيْهِ الْمَصِيْرُ ٣

ghāfiri
غَافِرِ
(The) Forgiver
l-dhanbi
ٱلذَّنۢبِ
(of) the sin
waqābili
وَقَابِلِ
and (the) Acceptor
l-tawbi
ٱلتَّوْبِ
(of) [the] repentance
shadīdi
شَدِيدِ
severe
l-ʿiqābi
ٱلْعِقَابِ
(in) the punishment
dhī
ذِى
Owner (of) the abundance
l-ṭawli
ٱلطَّوْلِۖ
Owner (of) the abundance
لَآ
(There is) no
ilāha
إِلَٰهَ
god
illā
إِلَّا
except
huwa
هُوَۖ
Him
ilayhi
إِلَيْهِ
to Him
l-maṣīru
ٱلْمَصِيرُ
(is) the final return
The forgiver of sin, acceptor of repentance, severe in punishment, owner of abundance. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the destination. (QS. [40] Ghafir: 3)

4

مَا يُجَادِلُ فِيْٓ اٰيٰتِ اللّٰهِ اِلَّا الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا فَلَا يَغْرُرْكَ تَقَلُّبُهُمْ فِى الْبِلَادِ ٤

مَا
Not
yujādilu
يُجَٰدِلُ
dispute
فِىٓ
concerning
āyāti
ءَايَٰتِ
(the) Verses
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
(of) Allah
illā
إِلَّا
except
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
kafarū
كَفَرُوا۟
disbelieve
falā
فَلَا
so (let) not
yaghrur'ka
يَغْرُرْكَ
deceive you
taqallubuhum
تَقَلُّبُهُمْ
their movement
فِى
in
l-bilādi
ٱلْبِلَٰدِ
the cities
No one disputes concerning the signs of Allah except those who disbelieve, so be not deceived by their [uninhibited] movement throughout the land. (QS. [40] Ghafir: 4)

كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ وَّالْاَحْزَابُ مِنْۢ بَعْدِهِمْ ۖوَهَمَّتْ كُلُّ اُمَّةٍۢ بِرَسُوْلِهِمْ لِيَأْخُذُوْهُ وَجَادَلُوْا بِالْبَاطِلِ لِيُدْحِضُوا بِهِ الْحَقَّ فَاَخَذْتُهُمْ ۗفَكَيْفَ كَانَ عِقَابِ ٥

كَذَّبَتْ
Denied
qablahum
قَبْلَهُمْ
before them
qawmu
قَوْمُ
(the) people
nūḥin
نُوحٍ
(of) Nuh
wal-aḥzābu
وَٱلْأَحْزَابُ
and the factions
min
مِنۢ
after them
baʿdihim
بَعْدِهِمْۖ
after them
wahammat
وَهَمَّتْ
and plotted
kullu
كُلُّ
every
ummatin
أُمَّةٍۭ
nation
birasūlihim
بِرَسُولِهِمْ
against their Messenger
liyakhudhūhu
لِيَأْخُذُوهُۖ
to seize him
wajādalū
وَجَٰدَلُوا۟
and they disputed
bil-bāṭili
بِٱلْبَٰطِلِ
by falsehood
liyud'ḥiḍū
لِيُدْحِضُوا۟
to refute
bihi
بِهِ
thereby
l-ḥaqa
ٱلْحَقَّ
the truth
fa-akhadhtuhum
فَأَخَذْتُهُمْۖ
So I seized them
fakayfa
فَكَيْفَ
Then how
kāna
كَانَ
was
ʿiqābi
عِقَابِ
My penalty?
The people of Noah denied before them and the [disbelieving] factions after them, and every nation intended [a plot] for their messenger to seize him, and they disputed by [using] falsehood to [attempt to] invalidate thereby the truth. So I seized them, and how [terrible] was My penalty. (QS. [40] Ghafir: 5)
Tafsir
6

وَكَذٰلِكَ حَقَّتْ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ عَلَى الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْٓا اَنَّهُمْ اَصْحٰبُ النَّارِۘ ٦

wakadhālika
وَكَذَٰلِكَ
And thus
ḥaqqat
حَقَّتْ
has been justified
kalimatu
كَلِمَتُ
(the) Word
rabbika
رَبِّكَ
(of) your Lord
ʿalā
عَلَى
against
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
kafarū
كَفَرُوٓا۟
disbelieved
annahum
أَنَّهُمْ
that they
aṣḥābu
أَصْحَٰبُ
(are) companions
l-nāri
ٱلنَّارِ
(of) the Fire
And thus has the word [i.e., decree] of your Lord come into effect upon those who disbelieved that they are companions of the Fire. (QS. [40] Ghafir: 6)

اَلَّذِيْنَ يَحْمِلُوْنَ الْعَرْشَ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهٗ يُسَبِّحُوْنَ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّهِمْ وَيُؤْمِنُوْنَ بِهٖ وَيَسْتَغْفِرُوْنَ لِلَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْاۚ رَبَّنَا وَسِعْتَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ رَّحْمَةً وَّعِلْمًا فَاغْفِرْ لِلَّذِيْنَ تَابُوْا وَاتَّبَعُوْا سَبِيْلَكَ وَقِهِمْ عَذَابَ الْجَحِيْمِ ٧

alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
Those who
yaḥmilūna
يَحْمِلُونَ
bear
l-ʿarsha
ٱلْعَرْشَ
the Throne
waman
وَمَنْ
and those
ḥawlahu
حَوْلَهُۥ
around it
yusabbiḥūna
يُسَبِّحُونَ
glorify
biḥamdi
بِحَمْدِ
(the) praises
rabbihim
رَبِّهِمْ
(of) their Lord
wayu'minūna
وَيُؤْمِنُونَ
and believe
bihi
بِهِۦ
in Him
wayastaghfirūna
وَيَسْتَغْفِرُونَ
and ask forgiveness
lilladhīna
لِلَّذِينَ
for those who
āmanū
ءَامَنُوا۟
believe
rabbanā
رَبَّنَا
"Our Lord!
wasiʿ'ta
وَسِعْتَ
You encompass
kulla
كُلَّ
all
shayin
شَىْءٍ
things
raḥmatan
رَّحْمَةً
(by Your) Mercy
waʿil'man
وَعِلْمًا
and knowledge
fa-igh'fir
فَٱغْفِرْ
so forgive
lilladhīna
لِلَّذِينَ
those who
tābū
تَابُوا۟
repent
wa-ittabaʿū
وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟
and follow
sabīlaka
سَبِيلَكَ
Your Way
waqihim
وَقِهِمْ
and save them (from)
ʿadhāba
عَذَابَ
(the) punishment
l-jaḥīmi
ٱلْجَحِيمِ
(of) the Hellfire
Those [angels] who carry the Throne and those around it exalt [Allah] with praise of their Lord and believe in Him and ask forgiveness for those who have believed, [saying], "Our Lord, You have encompassed all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who have repented and followed Your way and protect them from the punishment of Hellfire. (QS. [40] Ghafir: 7)

8

رَبَّنَا وَاَدْخِلْهُمْ جَنّٰتِ عَدْنِ ِۨالَّتِيْ وَعَدْتَّهُمْ وَمَنْ صَلَحَ مِنْ اٰبَاۤىِٕهِمْ وَاَزْوَاجِهِمْ وَذُرِّيّٰتِهِمْ ۗاِنَّكَ اَنْتَ الْعَزِيْزُ الْحَكِيْمُۙ ٨

rabbanā
رَبَّنَا
Our Lord!
wa-adkhil'hum
وَأَدْخِلْهُمْ
And admit them
jannāti
جَنَّٰتِ
(to) Gardens
ʿadnin
عَدْنٍ
(of) Eden
allatī
ٱلَّتِى
which
waʿadttahum
وَعَدتَّهُمْ
You have promised them
waman
وَمَن
and whoever
ṣalaḥa
صَلَحَ
(was) righteous
min
مِنْ
among
ābāihim
ءَابَآئِهِمْ
their fathers
wa-azwājihim
وَأَزْوَٰجِهِمْ
and their spouses
wadhurriyyātihim
وَذُرِّيَّٰتِهِمْۚ
and their offspring
innaka
إِنَّكَ
Indeed You
anta
أَنتَ
You
l-ʿazīzu
ٱلْعَزِيزُ
(are) the All-Mighty
l-ḥakīmu
ٱلْحَكِيمُ
the All-Wise
Our Lord, and admit them to gardens of perpetual residence which You have promised them and whoever was righteous among their forefathers, their spouses and their offspring. Indeed, it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. (QS. [40] Ghafir: 8)
Tafsir
9

وَقِهِمُ السَّيِّاٰتِۗ وَمَنْ تَقِ السَّيِّاٰتِ يَوْمَىِٕذٍ فَقَدْ رَحِمْتَهٗ ۗوَذٰلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيْمُ ࣖ ٩

waqihimu
وَقِهِمُ
And protect them
l-sayiāti
ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِۚ
(from) the evils
waman
وَمَن
And whoever
taqi
تَقِ
you protect
l-sayiāti
ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ
(from) the evils
yawma-idhin
يَوْمَئِذٍ
(that) Day
faqad
فَقَدْ
then verily
raḥim'tahu
رَحِمْتَهُۥۚ
You bestowed Mercy on him
wadhālika
وَذَٰلِكَ
And that
huwa
هُوَ
[it]
l-fawzu
ٱلْفَوْزُ
(is) the success
l-ʿaẓīmu
ٱلْعَظِيمُ
the great"
And protect them from the evil consequences [of their deeds]. And he whom You protect from evil consequences that Day – You will have given him mercy. And that is the great attainment." (QS. [40] Ghafir: 9)

10

اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا يُنَادَوْنَ لَمَقْتُ اللّٰهِ اَكْبَرُ مِنْ مَّقْتِكُمْ اَنْفُسَكُمْ اِذْ تُدْعَوْنَ اِلَى الْاِيْمَانِ فَتَكْفُرُوْنَ ١٠

inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
kafarū
كَفَرُوا۟
disbelieved
yunādawna
يُنَادَوْنَ
will be cried out to them
lamaqtu
لَمَقْتُ
Certainly Allah's hatred
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Certainly Allah's hatred
akbaru
أَكْبَرُ
(was) greater
min
مِن
than
maqtikum
مَّقْتِكُمْ
your hatred
anfusakum
أَنفُسَكُمْ
(of) yourselves
idh
إِذْ
when
tud'ʿawna
تُدْعَوْنَ
you were called
ilā
إِلَى
to
l-īmāni
ٱلْإِيمَٰنِ
the faith
fatakfurūna
فَتَكْفُرُونَ
and you disbelieved
Indeed, those who disbelieve will be addressed, "The hatred of Allah for you was [even] greater than your hatred of yourselves [this Day in Hell] when you were invited to faith, but you disbelieved [i.e., refused]." (QS. [40] Ghafir: 10)
