Al-Qur'an Surah An-Nisa Verse 156

An-Nisa [4]: 156 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَّبِكُفْرِهِمْ وَقَوْلِهِمْ عَلٰى مَرْيَمَ بُهْتَانًا عَظِيْمًاۙ (النساء : ٤)

wabikuf'rihim
وَبِكُفْرِهِمْ
And for their disbelief
waqawlihim
وَقَوْلِهِمْ
and their saying
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
against
maryama
مَرْيَمَ
Maryam
buh'tānan
بُهْتَٰنًا
a slander
ʿaẓīman
عَظِيمًا
great

Transliteration:

Wa bikufrihim wa qawlihim 'alaa Maryama buh taanan 'azeema (QS. an-Nisāʾ:156)

English / Sahih Translation:

And [We cursed them] for their disbelief and their saying against Mary a great slander (QS. An-Nisa, ayah 156)

- and for their disbelief and for what they said against Maryam as a grim imputation,

Tafsir jalalayn

And for their disbelief, a second time, in Jesus (the b' [of bi-kufrihim, `for their disbelief'] is repeated in order to separate it [`their disbelief' in Jesus] from what is supplemented to it [`their utterance against Mary']) and their uttering against Mary a tremendous calumny, when they accused her of fornication.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

And because of their (Jews) disbelief and uttering against Maryam a grave false charge.

Ali bin Abi Talhah said that Ibn Abbas stated that;

the Jews accused Maryam of fornication.

This is also the saying of As-Suddi, Juwaybir, Muhammad bin Ishaq and several others.

This meaning is also apparent in the Ayah, as the Jews accused Maryam and her son of grave accusations;They accused her of fornication and claimed that `Isa was an illegitimate son. Some of them even claimed that she was menstruating while fornicating. May Allah's continued curse be upon them until the Day of Resurrection.
