Surah An-Nisa - Word by Word

(The Women)

bismillaahirrahmaanirrahiim
1

يٰٓاَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوْا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِيْ خَلَقَكُمْ مِّنْ نَّفْسٍ وَّاحِدَةٍ وَّخَلَقَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا وَبَثَّ مِنْهُمَا رِجَالًا كَثِيْرًا وَّنِسَاۤءً ۚ وَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ الَّذِيْ تَسَاۤءَلُوْنَ بِهٖ وَالْاَرْحَامَ ۗ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ كَانَ عَلَيْكُمْ رَقِيْبًا ١

yāayyuhā
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا
O
l-nāsu
ٱلنَّاسُ
mankind!
ittaqū
ٱتَّقُوا۟
Fear
rabbakumu
رَبَّكُمُ
your Lord
alladhī
ٱلَّذِى
the One Who
khalaqakum
خَلَقَكُم
created you
min
مِّن
from
nafsin
نَّفْسٍ
a soul
wāḥidatin
وَٰحِدَةٍ
single
wakhalaqa
وَخَلَقَ
and created
min'hā
مِنْهَا
from it
zawjahā
زَوْجَهَا
its mate
wabatha
وَبَثَّ
and dispersed
min'humā
مِنْهُمَا
from both of them
rijālan
رِجَالًا
men
kathīran
كَثِيرًا
many
wanisāan
وَنِسَآءًۚ
and women
wa-ittaqū
وَٱتَّقُوا۟
And fear
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
alladhī
ٱلَّذِى
(through) Whom
tasāalūna
تَسَآءَلُونَ
you ask
bihi
بِهِۦ
[with it]
wal-arḥāma
وَٱلْأَرْحَامَۚ
and the wombs
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
kāna
كَانَ
is
ʿalaykum
عَلَيْكُمْ
over you
raqīban
رَقِيبًا
Ever-Watchful
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer. (QS. [4] An-Nisa: 1)
Tafsir
2

وَاٰتُوا الْيَتٰمٰىٓ اَمْوَالَهُمْ وَلَا تَتَبَدَّلُوا الْخَبِيْثَ بِالطَّيِّبِ ۖ وَلَا تَأْكُلُوْٓا اَمْوَالَهُمْ اِلٰٓى اَمْوَالِكُمْ ۗ اِنَّهٗ كَانَ حُوْبًا كَبِيْرًا ٢

waātū
وَءَاتُوا۟
And give
l-yatāmā
ٱلْيَتَٰمَىٰٓ
(to) the orphans
amwālahum
أَمْوَٰلَهُمْۖ
their wealth
walā
وَلَا
and (do) not
tatabaddalū
تَتَبَدَّلُوا۟
exchange
l-khabītha
ٱلْخَبِيثَ
the bad
bil-ṭayibi
بِٱلطَّيِّبِۖ
with the good
walā
وَلَا
and (do) not
takulū
تَأْكُلُوٓا۟
consume
amwālahum
أَمْوَٰلَهُمْ
their wealth
ilā
إِلَىٰٓ
with
amwālikum
أَمْوَٰلِكُمْۚ
your wealth
innahu
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed it
kāna
كَانَ
is
ḥūban
حُوبًا
a sin
kabīran
كَبِيرًا
great
And give to the orphans their properties and do not substitute the defective [of your own] for the good [of theirs]. And do not consume their properties into your own. Indeed, that is ever a great sin. (QS. [4] An-Nisa: 2)
Tafsir
3

وَاِنْ خِفْتُمْ اَلَّا تُقْسِطُوْا فِى الْيَتٰمٰى فَانْكِحُوْا مَا طَابَ لَكُمْ مِّنَ النِّسَاۤءِ مَثْنٰى وَثُلٰثَ وَرُبٰعَ ۚ فَاِنْ خِفْتُمْ اَلَّا تَعْدِلُوْا فَوَاحِدَةً اَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ اَيْمَانُكُمْ ۗ ذٰلِكَ اَدْنٰٓى اَلَّا تَعُوْلُوْاۗ ٣

wa-in
وَإِنْ
And if
khif'tum
خِفْتُمْ
you fear
allā
أَلَّا
that not
tuq'siṭū
تُقْسِطُوا۟
you will be able to do justice
فِى
with
l-yatāmā
ٱلْيَتَٰمَىٰ
the orphans
fa-inkiḥū
فَٱنكِحُوا۟
then marry
مَا
what
ṭāba
طَابَ
seems suitable
lakum
لَكُم
to you
mina
مِّنَ
from
l-nisāi
ٱلنِّسَآءِ
the women
mathnā
مَثْنَىٰ
two
wathulātha
وَثُلَٰثَ
or three
warubāʿa
وَرُبَٰعَۖ
or four
fa-in
فَإِنْ
But if
khif'tum
خِفْتُمْ
you fear
allā
أَلَّا
that not
taʿdilū
تَعْدِلُوا۟
you can do justice
fawāḥidatan
فَوَٰحِدَةً
then (marry) one
aw
أَوْ
or
مَا
what
malakat
مَلَكَتْ
possesses
aymānukum
أَيْمَٰنُكُمْۚ
your right hand
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
That
adnā
أَدْنَىٰٓ
(is) more appropriate
allā
أَلَّا
that (may) not
taʿūlū
تَعُولُوا۟
you oppress
And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hands possess [i.e., slaves]. That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice]. (QS. [4] An-Nisa: 3)
Tafsir
4

وَاٰتُوا النِّسَاۤءَ صَدُقٰتِهِنَّ نِحْلَةً ۗ فَاِنْ طِبْنَ لَكُمْ عَنْ شَيْءٍ مِّنْهُ نَفْسًا فَكُلُوْهُ هَنِيْۤـًٔا مَّرِيْۤـًٔا ٤

waātū
وَءَاتُوا۟
And give
l-nisāa
ٱلنِّسَآءَ
the women
ṣaduqātihinna
صَدُقَٰتِهِنَّ
their dower
niḥ'latan
نِحْلَةًۚ
graciously
fa-in
فَإِن
But if
ṭib'na
طِبْنَ
they remit
lakum
لَكُمْ
to you
ʿan
عَن
of
shayin
شَىْءٍ
anything
min'hu
مِّنْهُ
of it
nafsan
نَفْسًا
(on their) own
fakulūhu
فَكُلُوهُ
then eat it
hanīan
هَنِيٓـًٔا
(in) satisfaction
marīan
مَّرِيٓـًٔا
(and) ease
And give the women [upon marriage] their [bridal] gifts graciously. But if they give up willingly to you anything of it, then take it in satisfaction and ease. (QS. [4] An-Nisa: 4)
Tafsir
5

وَلَا تُؤْتُوا السُّفَهَاۤءَ اَمْوَالَكُمُ الَّتِيْ جَعَلَ اللّٰهُ لَكُمْ قِيٰمًا وَّارْزُقُوْهُمْ فِيْهَا وَاكْسُوْهُمْ وَقُوْلُوْا لَهُمْ قَوْلًا مَّعْرُوْفًا ٥

walā
وَلَا
And (do) not
tu'tū
تُؤْتُوا۟
give
l-sufahāa
ٱلسُّفَهَآءَ
the foolish
amwālakumu
أَمْوَٰلَكُمُ
your wealth
allatī
ٱلَّتِى
which
jaʿala
جَعَلَ
(was) made
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
(by) Allah
lakum
لَكُمْ
for you
qiyāman
قِيَٰمًا
a means of support
wa-ur'zuqūhum
وَٱرْزُقُوهُمْ
(but) provide (for) them
fīhā
فِيهَا
with it
wa-ik'sūhum
وَٱكْسُوهُمْ
and clothe them
waqūlū
وَقُولُوا۟
and speak
lahum
لَهُمْ
to them
qawlan
قَوْلًا
words
maʿrūfan
مَّعْرُوفًا
(of) kindness
And do not give the weak-minded your property, which Allah has made a means of sustenance for you, but provide for them with it and clothe them and speak to them words of appropriate kindness. (QS. [4] An-Nisa: 5)
Tafsir
6

وَابْتَلُوا الْيَتٰمٰى حَتّٰىٓ اِذَا بَلَغُوا النِّكَاحَۚ فَاِنْ اٰنَسْتُمْ مِّنْهُمْ رُشْدًا فَادْفَعُوْٓا اِلَيْهِمْ اَمْوَالَهُمْ ۚ وَلَا تَأْكُلُوْهَآ اِسْرَافًا وَّبِدَارًا اَنْ يَّكْبَرُوْا ۗ وَمَنْ كَانَ غَنِيًّا فَلْيَسْتَعْفِفْ ۚ وَمَنْ كَانَ فَقِيْرًا فَلْيَأْكُلْ بِالْمَعْرُوْفِ ۗ فَاِذَا دَفَعْتُمْ اِلَيْهِمْ اَمْوَالَهُمْ فَاَشْهِدُوْا عَلَيْهِمْ ۗ وَكَفٰى بِاللّٰهِ حَسِيْبًا ٦

wa-ib'talū
وَٱبْتَلُوا۟
And test
l-yatāmā
ٱلْيَتَٰمَىٰ
the orphans
ḥattā
حَتَّىٰٓ
until
idhā
إِذَا
[when]
balaghū
بَلَغُوا۟
they reach[ed]
l-nikāḥa
ٱلنِّكَاحَ
(the age of) marriage
fa-in
فَإِنْ
then if
ānastum
ءَانَسْتُم
you perceive
min'hum
مِّنْهُمْ
in them
rush'dan
رُشْدًا
sound judgement
fa-id'faʿū
فَٱدْفَعُوٓا۟
then deliver
ilayhim
إِلَيْهِمْ
to them
amwālahum
أَمْوَٰلَهُمْۖ
their wealth
walā
وَلَا
And (do) not
takulūhā
تَأْكُلُوهَآ
eat it
is'rāfan
إِسْرَافًا
extravagantly
wabidāran
وَبِدَارًا
and hastily
an
أَن
(fearing) that
yakbarū
يَكْبَرُوا۟ۚ
they will grow up
waman
وَمَن
And whoever
kāna
كَانَ
is
ghaniyyan
غَنِيًّا
rich
falyastaʿfif
فَلْيَسْتَعْفِفْۖ
then he should refrain
waman
وَمَن
and whoever
kāna
كَانَ
is
faqīran
فَقِيرًا
poor
falyakul
فَلْيَأْكُلْ
then let him eat (of it)
bil-maʿrūfi
بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِۚ
in a fair manner
fa-idhā
فَإِذَا
Then when
dafaʿtum
دَفَعْتُمْ
you deliver
ilayhim
إِلَيْهِمْ
to them
amwālahum
أَمْوَٰلَهُمْ
their wealth
fa-ashhidū
فَأَشْهِدُوا۟
then take witnesses
ʿalayhim
عَلَيْهِمْۚ
on them
wakafā
وَكَفَىٰ
And is sufficient
bil-lahi
بِٱللَّهِ
Allah
ḥasīban
حَسِيبًا
(as) a Reckoner
And test the orphans [in their abilities] until they reach marriageable age. Then if you perceive in them sound judgement, release their property to them. And do not consume it excessively and quickly, [anticipating] that they will grow up. And whoever, [when acting as guardian], is self-sufficient should refrain [from taking a fee]; and whoever is poor – let him take according to what is acceptable. Then when you release their property to them, bring witnesses upon them. And sufficient is Allah as Accountant. (QS. [4] An-Nisa: 6)
Tafsir
7

لِلرِّجَالِ نَصِيْبٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ الْوَالِدٰنِ وَالْاَقْرَبُوْنَۖ وَلِلنِّسَاۤءِ نَصِيْبٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ الْوَالِدٰنِ وَالْاَقْرَبُوْنَ مِمَّا قَلَّ مِنْهُ اَوْ كَثُرَ ۗ نَصِيْبًا مَّفْرُوْضًا ٧

lilrrijāli
لِّلرِّجَالِ
For the men
naṣībun
نَصِيبٌ
a portion
mimmā
مِّمَّا
of what
taraka
تَرَكَ
(is) left
l-wālidāni
ٱلْوَٰلِدَانِ
(by) the parents
wal-aqrabūna
وَٱلْأَقْرَبُونَ
and the near relatives
walilnnisāi
وَلِلنِّسَآءِ
and for the women
naṣībun
نَصِيبٌ
a portion
mimmā
مِّمَّا
of what
taraka
تَرَكَ
(is) left
l-wālidāni
ٱلْوَٰلِدَانِ
(by) parents
wal-aqrabūna
وَٱلْأَقْرَبُونَ
and the near relatives
mimmā
مِمَّا
of what
qalla
قَلَّ
(is) little
min'hu
مِنْهُ
of it
aw
أَوْ
or
kathura
كَثُرَۚ
much -
naṣīban
نَصِيبًا
a portion
mafrūḍan
مَّفْرُوضًا
obligatory
For men is a share of what the parents and close relatives leave, and for women is a share of what the parents and close relatives leave, be it little or much – an obligatory share. (QS. [4] An-Nisa: 7)
Tafsir
8

وَاِذَا حَضَرَ الْقِسْمَةَ اُولُوا الْقُرْبٰى وَالْيَتٰمٰى وَالْمَسٰكِيْنُ فَارْزُقُوْهُمْ مِّنْهُ وَقُوْلُوْا لَهُمْ قَوْلًا مَّعْرُوْفًا ٨

wa-idhā
وَإِذَا
And when
ḥaḍara
حَضَرَ
present
l-qis'mata
ٱلْقِسْمَةَ
(at) the (time of) division
ulū
أُو۟لُوا۟
(of)
l-qur'bā
ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ
the relatives
wal-yatāmā
وَٱلْيَتَٰمَىٰ
and the orphans
wal-masākīnu
وَٱلْمَسَٰكِينُ
and the poor
fa-ur'zuqūhum
فَٱرْزُقُوهُم
then provide them
min'hu
مِّنْهُ
from it
waqūlū
وَقُولُوا۟
and speak
lahum
لَهُمْ
to them
qawlan
قَوْلًا
words
maʿrūfan
مَّعْرُوفًا
(of) kindness
And when [other] relatives and orphans and the needy are present at the [time of] division, then provide for them [something] out of it [i.e., the estate] and speak to them words of appropriate kindness. (QS. [4] An-Nisa: 8)
Tafsir
9

وَلْيَخْشَ الَّذِيْنَ لَوْ تَرَكُوْا مِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّةً ضِعٰفًا خَافُوْا عَلَيْهِمْۖ فَلْيَتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ وَلْيَقُوْلُوْا قَوْلًا سَدِيْدًا ٩

walyakhsha
وَلْيَخْشَ
And let fear
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
law
لَوْ
if
tarakū
تَرَكُوا۟
they left
min
مِنْ
from
khalfihim
خَلْفِهِمْ
behind
dhurriyyatan
ذُرِّيَّةً
offspring
ḍiʿāfan
ضِعَٰفًا
weak
khāfū
خَافُوا۟
(and) they would have feared
ʿalayhim
عَلَيْهِمْ
about them
falyattaqū
فَلْيَتَّقُوا۟
So let them fear
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
walyaqūlū
وَلْيَقُولُوا۟
and let them speak
qawlan
قَوْلًا
words
sadīdan
سَدِيدًا
appropriate
And let those [executors and guardians] fear [injustice] as if they [themselves] had left weak offspring behind and feared for them. So let them fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. (QS. [4] An-Nisa: 9)
Tafsir
10

اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ يَأْكُلُوْنَ اَمْوَالَ الْيَتٰمٰى ظُلْمًا اِنَّمَا يَأْكُلُوْنَ فِيْ بُطُوْنِهِمْ نَارًا ۗ وَسَيَصْلَوْنَ سَعِيْرًا ࣖ ١٠

inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
yakulūna
يَأْكُلُونَ
consume
amwāla
أَمْوَٰلَ
wealth
l-yatāmā
ٱلْيَتَٰمَىٰ
(of) the orphans
ẓul'man
ظُلْمًا
wrongfully
innamā
إِنَّمَا
only
yakulūna
يَأْكُلُونَ
they consume
فِى
in
buṭūnihim
بُطُونِهِمْ
their bellies
nāran
نَارًاۖ
fire
wasayaṣlawna
وَسَيَصْلَوْنَ
and they will be burned
saʿīran
سَعِيرًا
(in) a Blazing Fire
Indeed, those who devour the property of orphans unjustly are only consuming into their bellies fire. And they will be burned in a Blaze [i.e., Hellfire]. (QS. [4] An-Nisa: 10)
Tafsir
