Al-Qur'an Surah Az-Zumar Verse 51

Az-Zumar [39]: 51 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

فَاَصَابَهُمْ سَيِّاٰتُ مَا كَسَبُوْا ۗوَالَّذِيْنَ ظَلَمُوْا مِنْ هٰٓؤُلَاۤءِ سَيُصِيْبُهُمْ سَيِّاٰتُ مَا كَسَبُوْا ۙوَمَا هُمْ بِمُعْجِزِيْنَ (الزمر : ٣٩)

fa-aṣābahum
فَأَصَابَهُمْ
Then struck them
sayyiātu
سَيِّـَٔاتُ
(the) evils
مَا
(of) what
kasabū
كَسَبُوا۟ۚ
they earned
wa-alladhīna
وَٱلَّذِينَ
And those who
ẓalamū
ظَلَمُوا۟
have wronged
min
مِنْ
of
hāulāi
هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ
these
sayuṣībuhum
سَيُصِيبُهُمْ
will strike them
sayyiātu
سَيِّـَٔاتُ
(the) evils
مَا
(of) what
kasabū
كَسَبُوا۟
they earned;
wamā
وَمَا
and not
hum
هُم
they
bimuʿ'jizīna
بِمُعْجِزِينَ
will be able to escape

Transliteration:

Fa asaabahum saiyi aatu maa kasaboo; wallazeena zalamoo min haaa'ulaaa'i sa yuzeebuhum saiyi aatu maa kasaboo wa maa hum bimu'jizeen (QS. az-Zumar:51)

English / Sahih Translation:

And the evil consequences of what they earned struck them. And those who have wronged of these [people] will be struck [i.e., afflicted] by the evil consequences of what they earned; and they will not cause failure. (QS. Az-Zumar, ayah 51)

and they were overtaken by the evils of what they had earned; and the wrongdoers from these (infidels too) will be overtaken by the evils of what they have earned - and they will not be able to escape.

So the evil ˹consequences˺ of their deeds overtook them. And the wrongdoers among these ˹pagans˺ will be overtaken by the evil ˹consequences˺ of their deeds. And they will have no escape.

Therefore the evil consequences of their deeds overtook them, and the wrongdoers among these [pagans] will be overtaken by the evil consequences of their deeds, and they will have no escape.

in that the evils of that they earned smote them. The evildoers of these men, they too shall be smitten by the evils -- of that they earned; they will not be able to frustrate it.

they suffered its evil effects. Today’s wrongdoers will also suffer the evil effects of their deeds: they will not escape.

And there befell them the evils of that which they had earned. And of these they who go wrong-anon will befall them the evils of that which they earn; nor can they frustrate.

Nay, the evil results of their Deeds overtook them. And the wrong-doers of this (generation)- the evil results of their Deeds will soon overtake them (too), and they will never be able to frustrate (Our Plan)!

and the evil consequences of their deeds overtook them. The wrongdoers among these will also be overtaken by the evil consequences of their deeds. They will be utterly unable to frustrate (Us).

Then the worst of what they had done overtook them. So will the evil deeds of those who are sinners among them recoil back on them. They cannot get the better (of Us).

Therefore the evils of their earnings befell them; and those who are unjust among them – soon the evils of the earnings will befall them, and they cannot escape.

So the evils of what they had earned visited them, and as for the wrongdoers among these, the evils of what they earn shall be visited on them and they will not frustrate [Allah].

The evil results of what they earned fell upon them. So also will the evil results of what they have earned fall upon these (new generations) who do wrong. And they will never be able to frustrate (Our will).

Amatul Rahman Omar

And the evil (consequences) of their deeds did overtake them. As for the wrong-doers from among these (rejecters of the truth), the evil (consequences) of their deeds shall surely overtake them also. They will never be able to frustrate (God´s plan).

English Literal

so struck/marked them sins/crimes (of) what they gained/acquired , and those who caused injustice/oppression from those, sins/crimes (of) what they gained/acquired will mark/strike them ,and they are not with disabling/frustrating.

Therefore the evils of their earnings befell them; and those who are unjust among them - soon the evils of the earnings will befall them, and they cannot escape.

But there befell them the evil (consequences) of what they earned; and those who are unjust from among this generation, there shall also befall them the evil (consequences) of what they earn, and they shall not escape.

So, the evil results of that which they earned overtook them. And those who did wrong of these [people to whom you (Muhammad SAW) have been sent], will also be overtaken by the evil results (torment) for that which they earned, and they will never be able to escape.

Those before them did say it indeed, but what they earned availed them not.

They were afflicted by the terrible result of whatever they gained. Besides this affliction, the unjust among them will also suffer the consequence of their deeds. They will not be able to challenge God.

and the evil of their earnings coiled upon them. The harmdoers among these will also be coiled by the evils of their earnings, they will be unable to defeat it.

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

So, the evil results of that which they earned overtook them. And those who did wrong of these will also be overtaken by the evil results for that which they earned; and they will never be able to escape.

Wahiduddin Khan

the very evil of their deeds recoiled upon them; today's wrongdoers shall also have the evil of their deeds recoil upon them: they will never be able to frustrate [Our plan].

Talal Itani

The evils of their deeds caught up with them. And the wrongdoers among these will also be afflicted by the evils of what they earned, and they cannot prevent it.

Tafsir jalalayn

So the evils of what they earned smote them, that is, the requital thereof [smote them]. And the evildoers among these, namely, [among] Quraysh, shall also be smitten by the evils of what they earned, and they will not be able to thwart it; [they will not] elude Our chastisement -- thus they were made to suffer seven years of drought and [only] afterwards were they enriched [with provision from God].

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

فَأَصَابَهُمْ سَيِّيَاتُ مَا كَسَبُوا وَالَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مِنْ هَوُلَاأء

So, the evil results of that which they earned overtook them. And those who did wrong of these...

means, the people who are addressed here,

سَيُصِيبُهُمْ سَيِّيَاتُ مَا كَسَبُوا

will also be overtaken by the evil results (torment) for that which they earned;

just as happened to those earlier peoples.

وَمَا هُم بِمُعْجِزِينَ



and they will never be able to escape.

This is like the Ayah in which Allah tells us how Qarun reacted when his people told him;

لَا تَفْرَحْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْفَرِحِينَ


وَابْتَغِ فِيمَأ ءَاتَاكَ اللَّهُ الدَّارَ الاٌّخِرَةَ وَلَا تَنسَ نَصِيبَكَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا وَأَحْسِن كَمَأ أَحْسَنَ اللَّهُ إِلَيْكَ وَلَا تَبْغِ الْفَسَادَ فِى الاٌّرْضِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُفْسِدِينَ

قَالَ إِنَّمَأ أُوتِيتُهُ عَلَى عِلْمٍ عِندِى أَوَلَمْ يَعْلَمْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ أَهْلَكَ مِن قَبْلِهِ مِنَ الْقُرُونِ مَنْ هُوَ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُ قُوَّةً وَأَكْثَرُ جَمْعاً وَلَا يُسْأَلُ عَن ذُنُوبِهِمُ الْمُجْرِمُونَ
Do not exult, verily, Allah likes not those who exult.

But seek, with that (wealth) which Allah has bestowed on you, the home of the Hereafter, and forget not your portion of lawful enjoyment in this world; and do good as Allah has been good to you, and seek not mischief in the land. Verily, Allah likes not the corrupters."

He said;"This has been given to me only because of the knowledge I possess."

Did he not know that Allah had destroyed before him generations, men who were stronger than him in might and greater in the amount (of riches) they had collected? But the criminals will not be questioned (immediately) of their sins. (28;76-78)

And Allah says;

وَقَالُواْ نَحْنُ أَكْثَـرُ أَمْوَلاً وَأَوْلَـداً وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ

And they say;"We are more in wealth and in children, and we are not going to be punished." (34;35)
