Al-Qur'an Surah Az-Zumar Verse 47

Were the wrongdoers to own all that is on earth, and even twice as much, they would surely seek to ransom themselves with it against the evil punishment on the Day of Judgment. There will appear to them from Allah what they have never imagined.

Even if the wrongdoers were to possess everything in the world twice over, they would certainly offer it to ransom themselves from the horrible punishment on Judgment Day, for they will see from Allah what they had never expected.

And if that (E) to those who were unjust/oppressive what (is) in the earth/Planet Earth all/all together, and equal to it with it, they would have ransomed/compensated with it from the torture`s evil/harm (on) the Resurrection Day, and it appeared to them from God what they were not thinking/supposing.

Tafsir jalalayn

And [even] if the evildoers possessed all that is in the earth, and as much of it besides, they would surely offer it to ransom themselves from the terrible chastisement on the Day of Resurrection. And there will appear, [there will become] manifest, to them from God that which they had never reckoned, [what they never] supposed [they would see].

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَلَوْ أَنَّ لِلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا

And those who did wrong, (means, the idolators).

مَا فِي الاْاَرْضِ جَمِيعًا وَمِثْلَهُ مَعَهُ

if they had all that is in earth and therewith as much again,

لَاافْتَدَوْا بِهِ مِن سُوءِ الْعَذَابِ

they verily, would offer it to ransom themselves therewith from the evil torment;

means, that which Allah has decreed for them on the Day of Resurrection. But the ransom will not be accepted from them, even if it were to be an earth-full of gold as He mentioned elsewhere (3;91).

يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ

on the Day of Resurrection,

Then Allah says;

وَبَدَا لَهُم مِّنَ اللَّهِ مَا لَمْ يَكُونُوا يَحْتَسِبُونَ



and there will become apparent to them from Allah what they had not been reckoning.

which means, when they come to realize what Allah's punishment for them will be, which they had never before imagined
