Surah Az-Zumar - Word by Word

(The Troops)

bismillaahirrahmaanirrahiim
1

تَنْزِيْلُ الْكِتٰبِ مِنَ اللّٰهِ الْعَزِيْزِ الْحَكِيْمِ ١

tanzīlu
تَنزِيلُ
(The) revelation
l-kitābi
ٱلْكِتَٰبِ
(of) the Book
mina
مِنَ
(is) from
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
l-ʿazīzi
ٱلْعَزِيزِ
the All-Mighty
l-ḥakīmi
ٱلْحَكِيمِ
the All-Wise
The revelation of the Book [i.e., the Quran] is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Wise. (QS. [39] Az-Zumar: 1)
Tafsir
2

اِنَّآ اَنْزَلْنَآ اِلَيْكَ الْكِتٰبَ بِالْحَقِّ فَاعْبُدِ اللّٰهَ مُخْلِصًا لَّهُ الدِّيْنَۗ ٢

innā
إِنَّآ
Indeed We
anzalnā
أَنزَلْنَآ
[We] have revealed
ilayka
إِلَيْكَ
to you
l-kitāba
ٱلْكِتَٰبَ
the Book
bil-ḥaqi
بِٱلْحَقِّ
in truth;
fa-uʿ'budi
فَٱعْبُدِ
so worship
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
mukh'liṣan
مُخْلِصًا
(being) sincere
lahu
لَّهُ
to Him
l-dīna
ٱلدِّينَ
(in) the religion
Indeed, We have sent down to you the Book, [O Muhammad], in truth. So worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion. (QS. [39] Az-Zumar: 2)
Tafsir
3

اَلَا لِلّٰهِ الدِّيْنُ الْخَالِصُ ۗوَالَّذِيْنَ اتَّخَذُوْا مِنْ دُوْنِهٖٓ اَوْلِيَاۤءَۘ مَا نَعْبُدُهُمْ اِلَّا لِيُقَرِّبُوْنَآ اِلَى اللّٰهِ زُلْفٰىۗ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يَحْكُمُ بَيْنَهُمْ فِيْ مَا هُمْ فِيْهِ يَخْتَلِفُوْنَ ەۗ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يَهْدِيْ مَنْ هُوَ كٰذِبٌ كَفَّارٌ ٣

alā
أَلَا
Unquestionably
lillahi
لِلَّهِ
for Allah
l-dīnu
ٱلدِّينُ
(is) the religion
l-khāliṣu
ٱلْخَالِصُۚ
the pure
wa-alladhīna
وَٱلَّذِينَ
And those who
ittakhadhū
ٱتَّخَذُوا۟
take
min
مِن
besides Him
dūnihi
دُونِهِۦٓ
besides Him
awliyāa
أَوْلِيَآءَ
protectors
مَا
"Not
naʿbuduhum
نَعْبُدُهُمْ
we worship them
illā
إِلَّا
except
liyuqarribūnā
لِيُقَرِّبُونَآ
that they may bring us near
ilā
إِلَى
to
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
zul'fā
زُلْفَىٰٓ
(in) position"
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
yaḥkumu
يَحْكُمُ
will judge
baynahum
بَيْنَهُمْ
between them
فِى
in
مَا
what
hum
هُمْ
they
fīhi
فِيهِ
[in it]
yakhtalifūna
يَخْتَلِفُونَۗ
differ
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
لَا
(does) not
yahdī
يَهْدِى
guide
man
مَنْ
(one) who
huwa
هُوَ
[he]
kādhibun
كَٰذِبٌ
(is) a liar
kaffārun
كَفَّارٌ
and a disbeliever
Unquestionably, for Allah is the pure religion. And those who take protectors besides Him [say], "We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allah in position." Indeed, Allah will judge between them concerning that over which they differ. Indeed, Allah does not guide he who is a liar and [confirmed] disbeliever. (QS. [39] Az-Zumar: 3)
Tafsir
4

لَوْ اَرَادَ اللّٰهُ اَنْ يَّتَّخِذَ وَلَدًا لَّاصْطَفٰى مِمَّا يَخْلُقُ مَا يَشَاۤءُ ۙ سُبْحٰنَهٗ ۗهُوَ اللّٰهُ الْوَاحِدُ الْقَهَّارُ ٤

لَّوْ
If
arāda
أَرَادَ
Allah (had) intended
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah (had) intended
an
أَن
to
yattakhidha
يَتَّخِذَ
take
waladan
وَلَدًا
a son
la-iṣ'ṭafā
لَّٱصْطَفَىٰ
surely, He (could) have chosen
mimmā
مِمَّا
from what
yakhluqu
يَخْلُقُ
He creates
مَا
whatever
yashāu
يَشَآءُۚ
He willed
sub'ḥānahu
سُبْحَٰنَهُۥۖ
Glory be to Him!
huwa
هُوَ
He
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
(is) Allah
l-wāḥidu
ٱلْوَٰحِدُ
the One
l-qahāru
ٱلْقَهَّارُ
the Irresistible
If Allah had intended to take a son, He could have chosen from what He creates whatever He willed. Exalted is He; He is Allah, the One, the Prevailing. (QS. [39] Az-Zumar: 4)
Tafsir
5

خَلَقَ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضَ بِالْحَقِّۚ يُكَوِّرُ الَّيْلَ عَلَى النَّهَارِ وَيُكَوِّرُ النَّهَارَ عَلَى الَّيْلِ وَسَخَّرَ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَۗ كُلٌّ يَّجْرِيْ لِاَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّىۗ اَلَا هُوَ الْعَزِيْزُ الْغَفَّارُ ٥

khalaqa
خَلَقَ
He created
l-samāwāti
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
the heavens
wal-arḍa
وَٱلْأَرْضَ
and the earth
bil-ḥaqi
بِٱلْحَقِّۖ
in [the] truth
yukawwiru
يُكَوِّرُ
He wraps
al-layla
ٱلَّيْلَ
the night
ʿalā
عَلَى
over
l-nahāri
ٱلنَّهَارِ
the day
wayukawwiru
وَيُكَوِّرُ
and wraps
l-nahāra
ٱلنَّهَارَ
the day
ʿalā
عَلَى
over
al-layli
ٱلَّيْلِۖ
the night
wasakhara
وَسَخَّرَ
And He subjected
l-shamsa
ٱلشَّمْسَ
the sun
wal-qamara
وَٱلْقَمَرَۖ
and the moon
kullun
كُلٌّ
each
yajrī
يَجْرِى
running
li-ajalin
لِأَجَلٍ
for a term
musamman
مُّسَمًّىۗ
specified
alā
أَلَا
Unquestionably
huwa
هُوَ
He
l-ʿazīzu
ٱلْعَزِيزُ
(is) the All-Mighty
l-ghafāru
ٱلْغَفَّٰرُ
the Oft-Forgiving
He created the heavens and earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. Unquestionably, He is the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver. (QS. [39] Az-Zumar: 5)

6

خَلَقَكُمْ مِّنْ نَّفْسٍ وَّاحِدَةٍ ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا وَاَنْزَلَ لَكُمْ مِّنَ الْاَنْعَامِ ثَمٰنِيَةَ اَزْوَاجٍ ۗ يَخْلُقُكُمْ فِيْ بُطُوْنِ اُمَّهٰتِكُمْ خَلْقًا مِّنْۢ بَعْدِ خَلْقٍ فِيْ ظُلُمٰتٍ ثَلٰثٍۗ ذٰلِكُمُ اللّٰهُ رَبُّكُمْ لَهُ الْمُلْكُۗ لَآ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَۚ فَاَنّٰى تُصْرَفُوْنَ ٦

khalaqakum
خَلَقَكُم
He created you
min
مِّن
from
nafsin
نَّفْسٍ
a soul
wāḥidatin
وَٰحِدَةٍ
single
thumma
ثُمَّ
Then
jaʿala
جَعَلَ
He made
min'hā
مِنْهَا
from it
zawjahā
زَوْجَهَا
its mate
wa-anzala
وَأَنزَلَ
And He sent down
lakum
لَكُم
for you
mina
مِّنَ
of
l-anʿāmi
ٱلْأَنْعَٰمِ
the cattle
thamāniyata
ثَمَٰنِيَةَ
eight
azwājin
أَزْوَٰجٍۚ
kinds
yakhluqukum
يَخْلُقُكُمْ
He creates you
فِى
in
buṭūni
بُطُونِ
(the) wombs
ummahātikum
أُمَّهَٰتِكُمْ
(of) your mothers
khalqan
خَلْقًا
creation
min
مِّنۢ
after
baʿdi
بَعْدِ
after
khalqin
خَلْقٍ
creation
فِى
in
ẓulumātin
ظُلُمَٰتٍ
darkness[es]
thalāthin
ثَلَٰثٍۚ
three
dhālikumu
ذَٰلِكُمُ
That
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
(is) Allah
rabbukum
رَبُّكُمْ
your Lord
lahu
لَهُ
for Him
l-mul'ku
ٱلْمُلْكُۖ
(is) the dominion
لَآ
(There is) no
ilāha
إِلَٰهَ
god
illā
إِلَّا
except
huwa
هُوَۖ
He
fa-annā
فَأَنَّىٰ
Then how
tuṣ'rafūna
تُصْرَفُونَ
are you turning away?
He created you from one soul. Then He made from it its mate, and He produced for you from the grazing livestock eight mates. He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, within three darknesses. That is Allah, your Lord; to Him belongs dominion. There is no deity except Him, so how are you averted? (QS. [39] Az-Zumar: 6)
Tafsir
7

اِنْ تَكْفُرُوْا فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَنِيٌّ عَنْكُمْ ۗوَلَا يَرْضٰى لِعِبَادِهِ الْكُفْرَۚ وَاِنْ تَشْكُرُوْا يَرْضَهُ لَكُمْۗ وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِّزْرَ اُخْرٰىۗ ثُمَّ اِلٰى رَبِّكُمْ مَّرْجِعُكُمْ فَيُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُوْنَۗ اِنَّهٗ عَلِيْمٌ ۢبِذَاتِ الصُّدُوْرِ ٧

in
إِن
If
takfurū
تَكْفُرُوا۟
you disbelieve
fa-inna
فَإِنَّ
then indeed
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
ghaniyyun
غَنِىٌّ
(is) free from need
ʿankum
عَنكُمْۖ
of you
walā
وَلَا
And not
yarḍā
يَرْضَىٰ
He likes
liʿibādihi
لِعِبَادِهِ
in His slaves
l-kuf'ra
ٱلْكُفْرَۖ
ungratefulness
wa-in
وَإِن
And if
tashkurū
تَشْكُرُوا۟
you are grateful
yarḍahu
يَرْضَهُ
He likes it
lakum
لَكُمْۗ
in you
walā
وَلَا
And not
taziru
تَزِرُ
will bear
wāziratun
وَازِرَةٌ
bearer of burdens
wiz'ra
وِزْرَ
(the) burden
ukh'rā
أُخْرَىٰۗ
(of) another
thumma
ثُمَّ
Then
ilā
إِلَىٰ
to
rabbikum
رَبِّكُم
your Lord
marjiʿukum
مَّرْجِعُكُمْ
(is) your return
fayunabbi-ukum
فَيُنَبِّئُكُم
then He will inform you
bimā
بِمَا
about what
kuntum
كُنتُمْ
you used (to)
taʿmalūna
تَعْمَلُونَۚ
do
innahu
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed, He
ʿalīmun
عَلِيمٌۢ
(is) the All-Knower
bidhāti
بِذَاتِ
of what (is) in the breasts
l-ṣudūri
ٱلصُّدُورِ
of what (is) in the breasts
If you disbelieve – indeed, Allah is Free from need of you. And He does not approve for His servants disbelief. And if you are grateful, He approves [i.e., likes] it for you; and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you about what you used to do. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts. (QS. [39] Az-Zumar: 7)

8

وَاِذَا مَسَّ الْاِنْسَانَ ضُرٌّ دَعَا رَبَّهٗ مُنِيْبًا اِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ اِذَا خَوَّلَهٗ نِعْمَةً مِّنْهُ نَسِيَ مَا كَانَ يَدْعُوْٓا اِلَيْهِ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَجَعَلَ لِلّٰهِ اَنْدَادًا لِّيُضِلَّ عَنْ سَبِيْلِهٖ ۗ قُلْ تَمَتَّعْ بِكُفْرِكَ قَلِيْلًا ۖاِنَّكَ مِنْ اَصْحٰبِ النَّارِ ٨

wa-idhā
وَإِذَا
And when
massa
مَسَّ
touches
l-insāna
ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ
[the] man
ḍurrun
ضُرٌّ
adversity
daʿā
دَعَا
he calls
rabbahu
رَبَّهُۥ
(to) his Lord
munīban
مُنِيبًا
turning
ilayhi
إِلَيْهِ
to Him
thumma
ثُمَّ
then
idhā
إِذَا
when
khawwalahu
خَوَّلَهُۥ
He bestows on him
niʿ'matan
نِعْمَةً
a favor
min'hu
مِّنْهُ
from Himself
nasiya
نَسِىَ
he forgets
مَا
(for) what
kāna
كَانَ
he used to call
yadʿū
يَدْعُوٓا۟
he used to call
ilayhi
إِلَيْهِ
[to] Him
min
مِن
before
qablu
قَبْلُ
before
wajaʿala
وَجَعَلَ
and he sets up
lillahi
لِلَّهِ
to Allah
andādan
أَندَادًا
rivals
liyuḍilla
لِّيُضِلَّ
to mislead
ʿan
عَن
from
sabīlihi
سَبِيلِهِۦۚ
His Path
qul
قُلْ
Say
tamattaʿ
تَمَتَّعْ
"Enjoy
bikuf'rika
بِكُفْرِكَ
in your disbelief
qalīlan
قَلِيلًاۖ
(for) a little
innaka
إِنَّكَ
Indeed, you
min
مِنْ
(are) of
aṣḥābi
أَصْحَٰبِ
(the) companions
l-nāri
ٱلنَّارِ
(of) the Fire"
And when adversity touches man, he calls upon his Lord, turning to Him [alone]; then when He bestows on him a favor from Himself, he forgets Him whom he called upon before, and he attributes to Allah equals to mislead [people] from His way. Say, "Enjoy your disbelief for a little; indeed, you are of the companions of the Fire." (QS. [39] Az-Zumar: 8)

9

اَمَّنْ هُوَ قَانِتٌ اٰنَاۤءَ الَّيْلِ سَاجِدًا وَّقَاۤىِٕمًا يَّحْذَرُ الْاٰخِرَةَ وَيَرْجُوْا رَحْمَةَ رَبِّهٖۗ قُلْ هَلْ يَسْتَوِى الَّذِيْنَ يَعْلَمُوْنَ وَالَّذِيْنَ لَا يَعْلَمُوْنَ ۗ اِنَّمَا يَتَذَكَّرُ اُولُوا الْاَلْبَابِ ࣖ ٩

أَمَّنْ
Is (one) who
huwa
هُوَ
[he]
qānitun
قَٰنِتٌ
(is) devoutly obedient
ānāa
ءَانَآءَ
(during) hours
al-layli
ٱلَّيْلِ
(of) the night
sājidan
سَاجِدًا
prostrating
waqāiman
وَقَآئِمًا
and standing
yaḥdharu
يَحْذَرُ
fearing
l-ākhirata
ٱلْءَاخِرَةَ
the Hereafter
wayarjū
وَيَرْجُوا۟
and hoping
raḥmata
رَحْمَةَ
(for the) Mercy
rabbihi
رَبِّهِۦۗ
(of) his Lord?
qul
قُلْ
Say
hal
هَلْ
"Are
yastawī
يَسْتَوِى
equal
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
yaʿlamūna
يَعْلَمُونَ
know
wa-alladhīna
وَٱلَّذِينَ
and those who
لَا
(do) not
yaʿlamūna
يَعْلَمُونَۗ
know?"
innamā
إِنَّمَا
Only
yatadhakkaru
يَتَذَكَّرُ
will take heed
ulū
أُو۟لُوا۟
those of understanding
l-albābi
ٱلْأَلْبَٰبِ
those of understanding
Is one who is devoutly obedient during periods of the night, prostrating and standing [in prayer], fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, [like one who does not]? Say, "Are those who know equal to those who do not know?" Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding. (QS. [39] Az-Zumar: 9)
Tafsir
10

قُلْ يٰعِبَادِ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوا اتَّقُوْا رَبَّكُمْ ۗلِلَّذِيْنَ اَحْسَنُوْا فِيْ هٰذِهِ الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةٌ ۗوَاَرْضُ اللّٰهِ وَاسِعَةٌ ۗاِنَّمَا يُوَفَّى الصّٰبِرُوْنَ اَجْرَهُمْ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ ١٠

qul
قُلْ
Say
yāʿibādi
يَٰعِبَادِ
"O My slaves
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
[those] who
āmanū
ءَامَنُوا۟
believe!
ittaqū
ٱتَّقُوا۟
Fear
rabbakum
رَبَّكُمْۚ
your Lord
lilladhīna
لِلَّذِينَ
For those who
aḥsanū
أَحْسَنُوا۟
do good
فِى
in
hādhihi
هَٰذِهِ
this
l-dun'yā
ٱلدُّنْيَا
world
ḥasanatun
حَسَنَةٌۗ
(is) good
wa-arḍu
وَأَرْضُ
and the earth
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
(of) Allah
wāsiʿatun
وَٰسِعَةٌۗ
(is) spacious
innamā
إِنَّمَا
Only
yuwaffā
يُوَفَّى
will be paid back in full
l-ṣābirūna
ٱلصَّٰبِرُونَ
the patient
ajrahum
أَجْرَهُم
their reward
bighayri
بِغَيْرِ
without
ḥisābin
حِسَابٍ
account"
Say, "O My servants who have believed, fear your Lord. For those who do good in this world is good, and the earth of Allah is spacious. Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account [i.e., limit]." (QS. [39] Az-Zumar: 10)
