Al-Qur'an Surah As-Saffat Verse 59
As-Saffat [37]: 59 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer
اِلَّا مَوْتَتَنَا الْاُوْلٰى وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِيْنَ (الصافات : ٣٧)
- illā
- إِلَّا
- Except
- mawtatanā
- مَوْتَتَنَا
- our death
- l-ūlā
- ٱلْأُولَىٰ
- the first
- wamā
- وَمَا
- and not
- naḥnu
- نَحْنُ
- we
- bimuʿadhabīna
- بِمُعَذَّبِينَ
- will be punished?"
Transliteration:
Illa mawtatanal oola wa maa nahnu bimu'azzabeen(QS. aṣ-Ṣāffāt:59)
English / Sahih Translation:
Except for our first death, and we will not be punished?" (QS. As-Saffat, ayah 59)

Tafsir jalalayn
aside from our first death, that is, the one [which we suffered] in this world, and are we not to be chastised?' -- this interrogative statement is one made out of [sheer] delight and in order to speak [at length] of the graces of God, exalted be He, in [His] granting of everlasting life and refraining from inflicting any punishment.
Tafseer Ibn Kathir
Are we then not to die (any more). Except our first death, and we shall not be punished.
This is what the believers will say when they feel joy at what Allah has given them, and they realize that they are to remain in Paradise forever with no punishment and no death to come.
Allah says;
إِنَّ هَذَا لَهُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ
