Al-Qur'an Surah As-Saffat Verse 36

As-Saffat [37]: 36 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَيَقُوْلُوْنَ اَىِٕنَّا لَتَارِكُوْٓا اٰلِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرٍ مَّجْنُوْنٍ ۗ (الصافات : ٣٧)

wayaqūlūna
وَيَقُولُونَ
And they say
a-innā
أَئِنَّا
"Are we
latārikū
لَتَارِكُوٓا۟
to leave
ālihatinā
ءَالِهَتِنَا
our gods
lishāʿirin
لِشَاعِرٍ
for a poet
majnūnin
مَّجْنُونٍۭ
mad?"

Transliteration:

Wa yaqooloona a'innaa lataarikooo aalihatinaa lishaa'irim majnoon (QS. aṣ-Ṣāffāt:36)

English / Sahih Translation:

And were saying, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?" (QS. As-Saffat, ayah 36)

and used to say, “Are we really to leave our gods because of an insane poet?”

and argued, “Should we really abandon our gods for a mad poet?”

and said, “Are we going to abandon our gods for a mad poet?”

saying, 'What, shall we forsake our gods for a poet possessed?'

And they said: are we going to abandon our gods on account of a Poet distracted?

And say; "What! shall we give up our gods for the sake of a Poet possessed?"

and said: “Shall we forsake our deities for the sake of a distracted poet?”

And said: "Should we abandon our gods for the sake of an insane poet?"

And they used to say, “Shall we forsake our Gods upon the sayings of a mad poet?”

and [they would] say, ‘Shall we abandon our gods for a crazy poet?’

And they would say, "Are we to give up our deities for the sake of a mad poet?"

And they used to say, `Are we to forsake our gods for the sake of a mad poet?´

English Literal

And they say: "Are we to leave our gods to a mad/insane poet?"

And they used to say, “Shall we forsake our Gods upon the sayings of a mad poet?”

And said, "What! Shall we indeed give up our gods for the sake of a mad poet?"

And (they) said: "Are we going to abandon our aliha (gods) for the sake of a mad poet?

They indeed were arrogant, when it was said to them: There is no god but Allah;

And to say: What! shall we indeed give up our gods for the sake of a mad poet?

And said: Shall we forsake our gods for a mad poet?

and said, "Should we give up our idols for the sake of an insane poet".

and said: 'Are we to renounce our gods for the sake of a mad poet'

And (they) said: "Are we going to abandon our gods for the sake of a mad poet"

Wahiduddin Khan

and replied, "Shall we then give up our deities at the bidding of a mad poet?"

Talal Itani

And said, “Are we to abandon our gods for a mad poet?”

Tafsir jalalayn

and would say, `Are we to abandon our gods for a mad poet?', that is, for the sake of what Muhammad (s) says? (as regards the hamzas [in a-inn, `are we'], the same applies as mentioned above).

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Truly, when it was said to them;"La ilaha illallah," they puffed themselves up with pride. And (they) said;"Are we going to abandon our gods for the sake of a mad poet!"

meaning, `Shall we stop worshipping our gods and the gods of our forefathers just because of the words of this mad poet' -- meaning the Messenger of Allah.

Allah said in refutation of their attitude
