Al-Qur'an Surah As-Saffat Verse 158

As-Saffat [37]: 158 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَجَعَلُوْا بَيْنَهٗ وَبَيْنَ الْجِنَّةِ نَسَبًا ۗوَلَقَدْ عَلِمَتِ الْجِنَّةُ اِنَّهُمْ لَمُحْضَرُوْنَۙ (الصافات : ٣٧)

wajaʿalū
وَجَعَلُوا۟
And they have made
baynahu
بَيْنَهُۥ
between Him
wabayna
وَبَيْنَ
and between
l-jinati
ٱلْجِنَّةِ
the jinn
nasaban
نَسَبًاۚ
a relationship
walaqad
وَلَقَدْ
but certainly
ʿalimati
عَلِمَتِ
know
l-jinatu
ٱلْجِنَّةُ
the jinn
innahum
إِنَّهُمْ
that they
lamuḥ'ḍarūna
لَمُحْضَرُونَ
(will) surely be brought

Transliteration:

Wa ja'aloo bainahoo wa bainal jinnati nasabaa; wa laqad 'alimatil jinnatu innahum lamuhdaroon (QS. aṣ-Ṣāffāt:158)

English / Sahih Translation:

And they have made [i.e., claimed] between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought [to punishment]. (QS. As-Saffat, ayah 158)

And they have made up between Him (Allah) and the Jinns some kinship, while the Jinns already know that they are bound to be seized.-

They have also established a ˹marital˺ relationship between Him and the jinn. Yet the jinn ˹themselves˺ know well that such people will certainly be brought ˹for punishment˺.[[ Or “Yet the jinn know well that they themselves will be brought ˹for judgment˺.” This is based on the claim of some pagan Arabs that the angels are Allah’s daughters through female jinn. ]]

And they have set up a kinship between Him and the jinn (- strong and mighty men), whereas the jinn know fully well that they themselves shall be called to account for their deeds.

English Literal

And they made/put between Him and between the Jinns (a) relationship/kinship and the Jinns had (E) known that they truly are being made to be present/attend (E).

And they invented a relationship between Him and the jinn. But the jinn know that they will be arraigned.

Tafsir jalalayn

And they, namely, the idolaters, have set up between Him, exalted be He, and the jinn, namely, the angels (jinna; they are so called because they are hidden [ijtinn] from vision) a kinship, by saying that they are God's daughters, while the jinn certainly know that they, that is, those who say this, shall indeed be arraigned, into the Fire, to be chastised therein.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَجَعَلُوا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْجِنَّةِ نَسَبًا

And they have invented a kinship between Him and the Jinn,

Mujahid said,

"The idolators said that the angels were the daughters of Allah.

Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said, `Then who are their mothers?'

They said, `The daughters of the leaders of the Jinn."'

Qatadah and Ibn Zayd also said this. Allah -- may He be blessed and exalted -- says;

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمَتِ الْجِنَّةُ

but the jinn know,

meaning, those to whom this is attributed

إِنَّهُمْ لَمُحْضَرُونَ



know well that they have indeed to appear (before Him).

means, that those who say that will be brought forth for punishment on the Day of Reckoning, because of the lies and falsehood that they uttered without knowledge.

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ
