And when they see a sign, they make fun of it,

Tafsir jalalayn

and when they see a sign, such as the splitting of the moon [cf. Q. 54;1], they make it an object of ridicule, they deride it.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَإِذَا رَأَوْا ايَةً

And when they see an Ayah.

means, clear evidence and proof,

يَسْتَسْخِرُونَ



they mock at it.

Mujahid and Qatadah said,

"They make fun of it."

وَقَالُوا إِنْ هَذَا إِلاَّ سِحْرٌ مُّبِينٌ
