Al-Qur'an Surah Ya-Sin Verse 52

They will say, “Woe to us! Who has raised us from our sleeping place? “This is what RaHmān (the All-Merciful Allah) had promised, and the messengers had told the truth.

(nervously) exclaiming. “Alas for us! Who roused us out of our sleeping-place?” “This is what the Merciful One had promised, and what (His) Messengers had said was true.”

They will say (to one an other), `O woe be on us! Who has aroused us from our sleeping place?´ `This is the same thing as the Most Gracious (God) had promised and the Messengers (of God) did indeed speak the truth´ (will be the reply they receive).

English Literal

They said: "Oh our calamity/scandal who sent/woke us up from our place of sleep? That (is) what the merciful promised and the messengers were truthful."

Saying, “O our misfortune! Who has raised us from our sleep? This is what the Most Gracious had promised, and the Noble Messengers had spoken the truth!”

They will say: "Woe to us! Who has raised us up from our place of sleep." (It will be said to them): "This is what the Most Gracious had promised, and the Messengers spoke truth!"

"Woe betide us!" they will say, "Who has roused us from our sleep?" This is what the Lord of Mercy promised: the messengers spoke the truth!

They will say, “Woe to us! Who resurrected us from our resting-place?” This is what the Most Gracious had promised, and the messengers have spoken the truth.”

Tafsir jalalayn

They, the disbelievers among them, will say, `O (y is for calling attention [to something]) woe to us! (waylan means halkan, `[O] our destruction!', and it is a verbal noun which has no [regular] verbal conjugation) Who has raised us from our place of sleep?, [they say this] because they will have been asleep in the interval between the two blasts and will not have been punished [yet]. This, that is, [this] raising, is that which the Compassionate One had promised and, regarding which, the messengers had spoken the truth'; they affirm [this truth] when such affirmation is no longer of any benefit to them -- but it is also said that this is said to them.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

قَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا مَن بَعَثَنَا مِن مَّرْقَدِنَا

They will say;"Woe to us! Who has raised us up from our place of sleep."

meaning, their graves, which in this world they thought they would never be raised from. When they see with their own eyes that in which they had disbelieved,
قَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا مَن بَعَثَنَا مِن مَّرْقَدِنَا
(They will say;"Woe to us! Who has raised us up from our place of sleep").

This does not contradict the fact that they will be punished in their graves, because in comparison to what is to come afterwards, that will seem like a nap.

Ubayy bin Ka`b, may Allah be pleased with him, Mujahid, Al-Hasan and Qatadah said,

"They will sleep before the Resurrection."

Qatadah said,

"That will be between the two trumpet blasts, they will say, `Who has raised us up from our place of sleep"'

When they say that, the believers will respond.

This was the view of more than one of the Salaf.

هَذَا مَا وَعَدَ الرَّحْمَنُ وَصَدَقَ الْمُرْسَلُونَ



(It will be said to them);"This is what the Most Gracious had promised, and the Messengers spoke truth!"

Al-Hasan said,

"The angels will reply to them in this manner."

There is no contradiction because both are possible. And Allah knows best.

إِن كَانَتْ إِلاَّ صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً فَإِذَا هُمْ جَمِيعٌ لَّدَيْنَا مُحْضَرُونَ
