Al-Qur'an Surah Ya-Sin Verse 23

Ya-Sin [36]: 23 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

ءَاَتَّخِذُ مِنْ دُوْنِهٖٓ اٰلِهَةً اِنْ يُّرِدْنِ الرَّحْمٰنُ بِضُرٍّ لَّا تُغْنِ عَنِّيْ شَفَاعَتُهُمْ شَيْـًٔا وَّلَا يُنْقِذُوْنِۚ (يس : ٣٦)

Transliteration:

'A-attakhizu min dooniheee aalihatan iny-yuridnir Rahmaanu bidurril-laa tughni 'annee shafaa 'atuhum shai 'anw-wa laa yunqizoon (QS. Yāʾ Sīn:23)

English / Sahih Translation:

Should I take other than Him [false] deities [while], if the Most Merciful intends for me some adversity, their intercession will not avail me at all, nor can they save me? (QS. Ya-Sin, ayah 23)

Do I take from other than Him gods, if the merciful wants/intends me with harm, (so) their mediation does not enrich/suffice me from me a thing, and they do not rescue/save me.

Tafsir jalalayn

Shall I take (a-attakhidu; regarding the two hamzas here, the same applies as mentioned with regard to a- andhartuhum above; this is an interrogative meant as a denial) besides Him, in other words, other than Him, [other] gods, idols, whose intercession, [that intercession of theirs] which you assert, if the Compassionate One should wish me any harm, will not avail me in any way, nor will they [be able to] save me? (wa-l yunqidhn is an adjectival qualification of lihatan, `gods').

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

أَأَتَّخِذُ مِن دُونِهِ الِهَةً

Shall I take besides Him gods!

This is a rhetorical question intended to rebuke and chastise.

إِن يُرِدْنِ الرَّحْمَن بِضُرٍّ لاَّ تُغْنِ عَنِّي شَفَاعَتُهُمْ شَيْيًا وَلَا يُنقِذُونِ



If the Most Gracious intends me any harm, their intercession will be of no use for me whatsoever, nor can they save me.

means, `these gods whom you worship instead of Him possess no power whatsoever, if Allah wills me some harm,'

فَلَ كَـشِفَ لَهُ إِلاَّ هُوَ

none can remove it but He. (6;17)

`These idols can neither cause any harm nor bring any benefit, and they cannot save me from the predicament I am in.'

إِنِّي إِذًا لَّفِي ضَلَلٍ مُّبِينٍ
