Al-Qur'an Surah Ya-Sin Verse 18

Ya-Sin [36]: 18 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قَالُوْٓا اِنَّا تَطَيَّرْنَا بِكُمْۚ لَىِٕنْ لَّمْ تَنْتَهُوْا لَنَرْجُمَنَّكُمْ وَلَيَمَسَّنَّكُمْ مِّنَّا عَذَابٌ اَلِيْمٌ (يس : ٣٦)

a punishment

أَلِيمٌ
painful"

Transliteration:

Qaaloo innaa tataiyarnaa bikum la'il-lam tantahoo lanar jumannakum wa la-yamassan nakum minnaa 'azaabun aleem (QS. Yāʾ Sīn:18)

English / Sahih Translation:

They said, "Indeed, we consider you a bad omen. If you do not desist, we will surely stone you, and there will surely touch you, from us, a painful punishment." (QS. Ya-Sin, ayah 18)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

They (the People of the Town) said, “We take you as a bad omen for us. If you do not desist, we will certainly stone you and you will be afflicted by a painful punishment from us.”

The people replied, “We definitely see you as a bad omen for us. If you do not desist, we will certainly stone you ˹to death˺ and you will be touched with a painful punishment from us.”

They rejoined: "We feel you augur ill. If you do not desist, we shall stone you to death, and inflict a grievous punishment on you."

They (the people of the city) said, “We think you are ominous; indeed, if you do not desist, we shall surely stone you to death, and you will surely face a grievous torture at our hands.”

They said, ‘Indeed we take you for a bad omen. If you do not desist we will stone you, and surely a painful punishment will visit you from us.’

They said: "We augur ill of you. If you do not desist, we will most certainly stone you, and a painful punishment will most certainly afflict you at our hands."

They (- the people of the town) said, `We augur ill from you (for we are always seize with one calamity or the other after your advent). If you do not give it (- your preaching) over we will certainly excommunicate you and a painful punishment shall befall you at our hands.´

English Literal

They said: "That we, we had a bad omen with you (you are a bad omen to us) if (E) you did not end/terminate/stop we will stone you (E), and a painful torture from us will touch you (E)."

They (the people of the city) said, “We think you are ominous; indeed, if you do not desist, we shall surely stone you to death, and you will surely face a grievous torture at our hands.”

"And nothing devolves on us but a clear deliverance (of the message)."

but they answered, "We see an evil omen in you. If you do not stop, we shall certainly stone you, and you will suffer a painful punishment at our hands."

They said, “We see an evil omen in you; if you do not give up, we will stone you, and a painful punishment from us will befall you.”

Tafsir jalalayn

They said, `We augur ill of you, for we have been deprived of rain because of you. If (la-in; the lm is for oaths) you do not desist, we will surely stone you and there shall befall you, at our hands, a painful chastisement'.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Allah tells,

قَالُوا

They (people) said;

i.e. the people of the city said to them,

إِنَّا تَطَيَّرْنَا بِكُمْ

For us, we see an evil omen from you;

meaning, `we do not see in your faces any sign of good for our lives.'

Qatadah said,

"They were saying, `if something bad befalls us, it will be because of you."'

Mujahid said,

"They were saying;People like you never enter a town, but its people are punished."

لَيِن لَّمْ تَنتَهُوا لَنَرْجُمَنَّكُمْ

if you cease not, we will surely stone you,

Qatadah said,

"By throwing stones at you."

وَلَيَمَسَّنَّكُم مِّنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ



and a painful torment will touch you from us.

means, a severe punishment
