Ya-Sin [36]: 14 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

اِذْ اَرْسَلْنَآ اِلَيْهِمُ اثْنَيْنِ فَكَذَّبُوْهُمَا فَعَزَّزْنَا بِثَالِثٍ فَقَالُوْٓا اِنَّآ اِلَيْكُمْ مُّرْسَلُوْنَ (يس : ٣٦)

and they said

إِنَّآ
"Indeed We
ilaykum
إِلَيْكُم
to you
mur'salūna
مُّرْسَلُونَ
(are) Messengers"

Transliteration:

Iz arsalnaaa ilaihimusnaini fakazzaboohumaa fa'azzaznaa bisaalisin faqaalooo innaaa ilaikum mursaloon (QS. Yāʾ Sīn:14)

English / Sahih Translation:

When We sent to them two but they denied them, so We strengthened [them] with a third, and they said, "Indeed, we are messengers to you." (QS. Ya-Sin, ayah 14)

when We sent to them two (apostles), and they rejected both of them, so We confirmed them with a third one. So they said, “We are sent to you.”

We sent them two messengers, but they rejected both. So We reinforced ˹the two˺ with a third, and they declared, “We have indeed been sent to you ˹as messengers˺.”

(At first) We sent to them two (Messengers, Moses and Jesus) but they cried lies to them. Then We strengthened (Our Apostles) with a third (- the Prophet Muhammad by fulfilling in his person their prophecies about his advent). So they said, (as a general Message to the people), `We have been sent to you (as Messengers by God).´

English Literal

When We sent to them two, so they denied/falsified them (B) , so We strengthened/ supported with a third, so they said: "We (E) (are) sent/being sent to you."

When We sent to them two Messengers, they denied them both; so We reinforced them with a third, and they said: "Verily, we have been sent to you as Messengers."

When We sent them two messengers, they rejected them both, so We strengthened them with a third. They said, "Truly, we have been sent to you [by God] as messengers."

Talal Itani

We sent them two messengers, but they denied them both, so We reinforced them with a third. They said, “We are messengers to you.”

Tafsir jalalayn

When We sent to them two men, and they denied them both (from idh arsaln ilayhim ithnayni fa- kadhdhabhum to the end is a substitution for the previous idh, `when'), so We reinforced [them] (read fa- `azazn or fa-`azzazn, in other words, We reinforced the two men) with a third, and they said, `We have indeed been sent to you [by God]'.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْهِمُ اثْنَيْنِ فَكَذَّبُوهُمَا

When We sent to them two Messengers, they denied them both;

means, they hastened to disbelieve in them.

فَعَزَّزْنَا بِثَالِثٍ

so We reinforced them with a third,

means, `We supported and strengthened them with a third Messenger.'

Ibn Jurayj narrated from Wahb bin Sulayman, from Shu`ayb Al-Jaba'i,

"The names of the first two Messengers were Sham`un and Yuhanna, and the name of the third was Bulus, and the city was Antioch (Antakiyah).

فَقَالُوا

and they said,

means, to the people of that city,

إِنَّا إِلَيْكُم مُّرْسَلُونَ



Verily, we have been sent to you as Messengers.

meaning, `from your Lord Who created you and Who commands you to worship Him Alone with no partners or associates.'

This was the view of Abu Al-Aliyah.

Qatadah bin Di`amah claimed that;

they were messengers of the Messiah, peace be upon him, sent to the people of Antioch
