(The Combined Forces)

11

هُنَالِكَ ابْتُلِيَ الْمُؤْمِنُوْنَ وَزُلْزِلُوْا زِلْزَالًا شَدِيْدًا ١١

hunālika
هُنَالِكَ
There -
ub'tuliya
ٱبْتُلِىَ
were tried
l-mu'minūna
ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ
the believers
wazul'zilū
وَزُلْزِلُوا۟
and shaken
zil'zālan
زِلْزَالًا
(with a) shake
shadīdan
شَدِيدًا
severe
There the believers were tested and shaken with a severe shaking. (QS. [33] Al-Ahzab: 11)
Tafsir
12

وَاِذْ يَقُوْلُ الْمُنٰفِقُوْنَ وَالَّذِيْنَ فِيْ قُلُوْبِهِمْ مَّرَضٌ مَّا وَعَدَنَا اللّٰهُ وَرَسُوْلُهٗٓ اِلَّا غُرُوْرًا ١٢

wa-idh
وَإِذْ
And when
yaqūlu
يَقُولُ
said
l-munāfiqūna
ٱلْمُنَٰفِقُونَ
the hypocrites
wa-alladhīna
وَٱلَّذِينَ
and those
فِى
in
qulūbihim
قُلُوبِهِم
their hearts
maraḍun
مَّرَضٌ
(was) a disease
مَّا
"Not
waʿadanā
وَعَدَنَا
Allah promised us
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah promised us
warasūluhu
وَرَسُولُهُۥٓ
and His messenger
illā
إِلَّا
except
ghurūran
غُرُورًا
delusion"
And [remember] when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease said, "Allah and His Messenger did not promise us except delusion," (QS. [33] Al-Ahzab: 12)
Tafsir
13

وَاِذْ قَالَتْ طَّاۤىِٕفَةٌ مِّنْهُمْ يٰٓاَهْلَ يَثْرِبَ لَا مُقَامَ لَكُمْ فَارْجِعُوْا ۚوَيَسْتَأْذِنُ فَرِيْقٌ مِّنْهُمُ النَّبِيَّ يَقُوْلُوْنَ اِنَّ بُيُوْتَنَا عَوْرَةٌ ۗوَمَا هِيَ بِعَوْرَةٍ ۗاِنْ يُّرِيْدُوْنَ اِلَّا فِرَارًا ١٣

wa-idh
وَإِذْ
And when
qālat
قَالَت
said
ṭāifatun
طَّآئِفَةٌ
a party
min'hum
مِّنْهُمْ
of them
yāahla
يَٰٓأَهْلَ
"O People
yathriba
يَثْرِبَ
(of) Yathrib!
لَا
No
muqāma
مُقَامَ
stand
lakum
لَكُمْ
for you
fa-ir'jiʿū
فَٱرْجِعُوا۟ۚ
so return"
wayastadhinu
وَيَسْتَـْٔذِنُ
And asked permission
farīqun
فَرِيقٌ
a group
min'humu
مِّنْهُمُ
of them
l-nabiya
ٱلنَّبِىَّ
(from) the Prophet
yaqūlūna
يَقُولُونَ
saying
inna
إِنَّ
"Indeed
buyūtanā
بُيُوتَنَا
our houses
ʿawratun
عَوْرَةٌ
(are) exposed"
wamā
وَمَا
and not
hiya
هِىَ
they
biʿawratin
بِعَوْرَةٍۖ
(were) exposed
in
إِن
Not
yurīdūna
يُرِيدُونَ
they wished
illā
إِلَّا
but
firāran
فِرَارًا
to flee
And when a faction of them said, "O people of Yathrib, there is no stability for you [here], so return [home]." And a party of them asked permission of the Prophet, saying, "Indeed, our houses are exposed [i.e., unprotected]," while they were not exposed. They did not intend except to flee. (QS. [33] Al-Ahzab: 13)
Tafsir
14

وَلَوْ دُخِلَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ مِّنْ اَقْطَارِهَا ثُمَّ سُـِٕلُوا الْفِتْنَةَ لَاٰتَوْهَا وَمَا تَلَبَّثُوْا بِهَآ اِلَّا يَسِيْرًا ١٤

walaw
وَلَوْ
And if
dukhilat
دُخِلَتْ
had been entered
ʿalayhim
عَلَيْهِم
upon them
min
مِّنْ
from
aqṭārihā
أَقْطَارِهَا
all its sides
thumma
ثُمَّ
then
su-ilū
سُئِلُوا۟
they had been asked
l-fit'nata
ٱلْفِتْنَةَ
the treachery
laātawhā
لَءَاتَوْهَا
they (would) have certainly done it
wamā
وَمَا
and not
talabbathū
تَلَبَّثُوا۟
they (would) have hesitated
bihā
بِهَآ
over it
illā
إِلَّا
except
yasīran
يَسِيرًا
a little
And if they had been entered upon from all its [surrounding] regions and fitnah [i.e., disbelief] had been demanded of them, they would have done it and not hesitated over it except briefly. (QS. [33] Al-Ahzab: 14)
Tafsir
15

وَلَقَدْ كَانُوْا عَاهَدُوا اللّٰهَ مِنْ قَبْلُ لَا يُوَلُّوْنَ الْاَدْبَارَ ۗوَكَانَ عَهْدُ اللّٰهِ مَسْـُٔوْلًا ١٥

walaqad
وَلَقَدْ
And certainly
kānū
كَانُوا۟
they had
ʿāhadū
عَٰهَدُوا۟
promised
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
min
مِن
before
qablu
قَبْلُ
before
لَا
not
yuwallūna
يُوَلُّونَ
they would turn
l-adbāra
ٱلْأَدْبَٰرَۚ
their backs
wakāna
وَكَانَ
And is
ʿahdu
عَهْدُ
(the) promise
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
(to) Allah
masūlan
مَسْـُٔولًا
to be questioned
And they had already promised Allah before not to turn their backs [i.e., flee]. And ever is the promise to Allah [that about which one will be] questioned. (QS. [33] Al-Ahzab: 15)

16

قُلْ لَّنْ يَّنْفَعَكُمُ الْفِرَارُ اِنْ فَرَرْتُمْ مِّنَ الْمَوْتِ اَوِ الْقَتْلِ وَاِذًا لَّا تُمَتَّعُوْنَ اِلَّا قَلِيْلًا ١٦

qul
قُل
Say
lan
لَّن
"Never
yanfaʿakumu
يَنفَعَكُمُ
will benefit you
l-firāru
ٱلْفِرَارُ
the fleeing
in
إِن
if
farartum
فَرَرْتُم
you flee
mina
مِّنَ
from
l-mawti
ٱلْمَوْتِ
death
awi
أَوِ
or
l-qatli
ٱلْقَتْلِ
killing
wa-idhan
وَإِذًا
and then
لَّا
not
tumattaʿūna
تُمَتَّعُونَ
you will be allowed to enjoy
illā
إِلَّا
except
qalīlan
قَلِيلًا
a little"
Say, [O Muhammad], "Never will fleeing benefit you if you should flee from death or killing; and then [if you did], you would not be given enjoyment [of life] except for a little." (QS. [33] Al-Ahzab: 16)

17

قُلْ مَنْ ذَا الَّذِيْ يَعْصِمُكُمْ مِّنَ اللّٰهِ اِنْ اَرَادَ بِكُمْ سُوْۤءًا اَوْ اَرَادَ بِكُمْ رَحْمَةً ۗوَلَا يَجِدُوْنَ لَهُمْ مِّنْ دُوْنِ اللّٰهِ وَلِيًّا وَّلَا نَصِيْرًا ١٧

qul
قُلْ
Say
man
مَن
"Who
dhā
ذَا
(is) it that
alladhī
ٱلَّذِى
(is) it that
yaʿṣimukum
يَعْصِمُكُم
(can) protect you
mina
مِّنَ
from
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
in
إِنْ
If
arāda
أَرَادَ
He intends
bikum
بِكُمْ
for you
sūan
سُوٓءًا
any harm
aw
أَوْ
or
arāda
أَرَادَ
He intends
bikum
بِكُمْ
for you
raḥmatan
رَحْمَةًۚ
a mercy?"
walā
وَلَا
And not
yajidūna
يَجِدُونَ
they will find
lahum
لَهُم
for them
min
مِّن
besides
dūni
دُونِ
besides
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
waliyyan
وَلِيًّا
any protector
walā
وَلَا
and not
naṣīran
نَصِيرًا
any helper
Say, "Who is it that can protect you from Allah if He intends for you an ill or intends for you a mercy?" And they will not find for themselves esides Allah any protector or any helper. (QS. [33] Al-Ahzab: 17)
Tafsir
18

۞ قَدْ يَعْلَمُ اللّٰهُ الْمُعَوِّقِيْنَ مِنْكُمْ وَالْقَاۤىِٕلِيْنَ لِاِخْوَانِهِمْ هَلُمَّ اِلَيْنَا ۚوَلَا يَأْتُوْنَ الْبَأْسَ اِلَّا قَلِيْلًاۙ ١٨

qad
قَدْ
Verily
yaʿlamu
يَعْلَمُ
Allah knows
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah knows
l-muʿawiqīna
ٱلْمُعَوِّقِينَ
those who hinder
minkum
مِنكُمْ
among you
wal-qāilīna
وَٱلْقَآئِلِينَ
and those who say
li-ikh'wānihim
لِإِخْوَٰنِهِمْ
to their brothers
halumma
هَلُمَّ
"Come
ilaynā
إِلَيْنَاۖ
to us"
walā
وَلَا
and not
yatūna
يَأْتُونَ
they come
l-basa
ٱلْبَأْسَ
(to) the battle
illā
إِلَّا
except
qalīlan
قَلِيلًا
a few
Already Allah knows the hinderers among you and those [hypocrites] who say to their brothers, "Come to us," and do not go to battle, except for a few, (QS. [33] Al-Ahzab: 18)

19

اَشِحَّةً عَلَيْكُمْ ۖ فَاِذَا جَاۤءَ الْخَوْفُ رَاَيْتَهُمْ يَنْظُرُوْنَ اِلَيْكَ تَدُوْرُ اَعْيُنُهُمْ كَالَّذِيْ يُغْشٰى عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْمَوْتِۚ فَاِذَا ذَهَبَ الْخَوْفُ سَلَقُوْكُمْ بِاَلْسِنَةٍ حِدَادٍ اَشِحَّةً عَلَى الْخَيْرِۗ اُولٰۤىِٕكَ لَمْ يُؤْمِنُوْا فَاَحْبَطَ اللّٰهُ اَعْمَالَهُمْۗ وَكَانَ ذٰلِكَ عَلَى اللّٰهِ يَسِيْرًا ١٩

ashiḥḥatan
أَشِحَّةً
Miserly
ʿalaykum
عَلَيْكُمْۖ
towards you
fa-idhā
فَإِذَا
But when
jāa
جَآءَ
comes
l-khawfu
ٱلْخَوْفُ
the fear
ra-aytahum
رَأَيْتَهُمْ
you see them
yanẓurūna
يَنظُرُونَ
looking
ilayka
إِلَيْكَ
at you
tadūru
تَدُورُ
revolving
aʿyunuhum
أَعْيُنُهُمْ
their eyes
ka-alladhī
كَٱلَّذِى
like one who
yugh'shā
يُغْشَىٰ
faints
ʿalayhi
عَلَيْهِ
faints
mina
مِنَ
from
l-mawti
ٱلْمَوْتِۖ
[the] death
fa-idhā
فَإِذَا
But when
dhahaba
ذَهَبَ
departs
l-khawfu
ٱلْخَوْفُ
the fear
salaqūkum
سَلَقُوكُم
they smite you
bi-alsinatin
بِأَلْسِنَةٍ
with tongues
ḥidādin
حِدَادٍ
sharp
ashiḥḥatan
أَشِحَّةً
miserly
ʿalā
عَلَى
towards
l-khayri
ٱلْخَيْرِۚ
the good
ulāika
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ
Those
lam
لَمْ
not
yu'minū
يُؤْمِنُوا۟
they have believed
fa-aḥbaṭa
فَأَحْبَطَ
so Allah made worthless
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
so Allah made worthless
aʿmālahum
أَعْمَٰلَهُمْۚ
their deeds
wakāna
وَكَانَ
And is
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
that
ʿalā
عَلَى
for
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
yasīran
يَسِيرًا
easy
Indisposed toward you. And when fear comes, you see them looking at you, their eyes revolving like one being overcome by death. But when fear departs, they lash you with sharp tongues, indisposed toward [any] good. Those have not believed, so Allah has rendered their deeds worthless, and ever is that, for Allah, easy. (QS. [33] Al-Ahzab: 19)

20

يَحْسَبُوْنَ الْاَحْزَابَ لَمْ يَذْهَبُوْا ۚوَاِنْ يَّأْتِ الْاَحْزَابُ يَوَدُّوْا لَوْ اَنَّهُمْ بَادُوْنَ فِى الْاَعْرَابِ يَسْاَلُوْنَ عَنْ اَنْۢبَاۤىِٕكُمْ ۖوَلَوْ كَانُوْا فِيْكُمْ مَّا قٰتَلُوْٓا اِلَّا قَلِيْلًا ࣖ ٢٠

yaḥsabūna
يَحْسَبُونَ
They think
l-aḥzāba
ٱلْأَحْزَابَ
the confederates
lam
لَمْ
(have) not
yadhhabū
يَذْهَبُوا۟ۖ
withdrawn
wa-in
وَإِن
And if
yati
يَأْتِ
(should) come
l-aḥzābu
ٱلْأَحْزَابُ
the confederates
yawaddū
يَوَدُّوا۟
they would wish
law
لَوْ
if
annahum
أَنَّهُم
that they (were)
bādūna
بَادُونَ
living in (the) desert
فِى
among
l-aʿrābi
ٱلْأَعْرَابِ
the Bedouins
yasalūna
يَسْـَٔلُونَ
asking
ʿan
عَنْ
about
anbāikum
أَنۢبَآئِكُمْۖ
your news
walaw
وَلَوْ
And if
kānū
كَانُوا۟
they were
fīkum
فِيكُم
among you
مَّا
not
qātalū
قَٰتَلُوٓا۟
they would fight
illā
إِلَّا
except
qalīlan
قَلِيلًا
a little
They think the companies have not [yet] withdrawn. And if the companies should come [again], they would wish they were in the desert among the bedouins, inquiring [from afar] about your news. And if they should be among you, they would not fight except for a little. (QS. [33] Al-Ahzab: 20)
