Al-Qur'an Surah Luqman Verse 31

Did you not see that the ships sail through the sea by the grace of Allah, so that He shows you some of His signs? In that, indeed, there are signs for every man of patience and gratitude.

Tafsir jalalayn

Have you not seen that the ships run upon the sea by the grace of God, that He may show you, O you who are being addressed in this [statement], some of His signs? Surely in that there are signs, lessons, for every [servant who is] steadfast, [in abstaining] from acts of disobedience to God, grateful, for His grace.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Allah tells us that He is the One Who has subjugated the sea so that ships may sail on it by His command, i.e., by His grace and power.

Allah says;

أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ الْفُلْكَ تَجْرِي فِي الْبَحْرِ بِنِعْمَتِ اللَّهِ

See you not that the ships sail through the sea by Allah's grace

For if He did not give the water the strength to carry the ships, they would not sail. So he says;

لِيُرِيَكُم مِّنْ ايَاتِهِ

that He may show you of His signs, meaning, by His power.

إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَايَاتٍ لِّكُلِّ صَبَّارٍ شَكُورٍ



Verily, in this are signs for every patient, grateful.

means, every person who bears difficulty with patience and who gives thanks at times of ease.

Then Allah says
