(Luqman)

11

هٰذَا خَلْقُ اللّٰهِ فَاَرُوْنِيْ مَاذَا خَلَقَ الَّذِيْنَ مِنْ دُوْنِهٖۗ بَلِ الظّٰلِمُوْنَ فِيْ ضَلٰلٍ مُّبِيْنٍ ࣖ ١١

hādhā
هَٰذَا
This
khalqu
خَلْقُ
(is the) creation
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
(of) Allah
fa-arūnī
فَأَرُونِى
So show Me
mādhā
مَاذَا
what
khalaqa
خَلَقَ
have created
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those
min
مِن
besides Him
dūnihi
دُونِهِۦۚ
besides Him
bali
بَلِ
Nay
l-ẓālimūna
ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ
the wrongdoers
فِى
(are) in
ḍalālin
ضَلَٰلٍ
error
mubīnin
مُّبِينٍ
clear
This is the creation of Allah. So show Me what those other than Him have created. Rather, the wrongdoers are in clear error. (QS. [31] Luqman: 11)
Tafsir
12

وَلَقَدْ اٰتَيْنَا لُقْمٰنَ الْحِكْمَةَ اَنِ اشْكُرْ لِلّٰهِ ۗوَمَنْ يَّشْكُرْ فَاِنَّمَا يَشْكُرُ لِنَفْسِهٖۚ وَمَنْ كَفَرَ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَنِيٌّ حَمِيْدٌ ١٢

walaqad
وَلَقَدْ
And verily
ātaynā
ءَاتَيْنَا
We gave
luq'māna
لُقْمَٰنَ
Luqman
l-ḥik'mata
ٱلْحِكْمَةَ
the wisdom
ani
أَنِ
that
ush'kur
ٱشْكُرْ
"Be grateful
lillahi
لِلَّهِۚ
to Allah"
waman
وَمَن
And whoever
yashkur
يَشْكُرْ
(is) grateful
fa-innamā
فَإِنَّمَا
then only
yashkuru
يَشْكُرُ
he is grateful
linafsihi
لِنَفْسِهِۦۖ
for himself
waman
وَمَن
And whoever
kafara
كَفَرَ
(is) ungrateful
fa-inna
فَإِنَّ
then indeed
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
ghaniyyun
غَنِىٌّ
(is) Free of need
ḥamīdun
حَمِيدٌ
Praiseworthy
And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom [and said], "Be grateful to Allah." And whoever is grateful is grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor] – then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy. (QS. [31] Luqman: 12)
Tafsir
13

وَاِذْ قَالَ لُقْمٰنُ لِابْنِهٖ وَهُوَ يَعِظُهٗ يٰبُنَيَّ لَا تُشْرِكْ بِاللّٰهِ ۗاِنَّ الشِّرْكَ لَظُلْمٌ عَظِيْمٌ ١٣

wa-idh
وَإِذْ
And when
qāla
قَالَ
said
luq'mānu
لُقْمَٰنُ
Luqman
li-ib'nihi
لِٱبْنِهِۦ
to his son
wahuwa
وَهُوَ
while he
yaʿiẓuhu
يَعِظُهُۥ
(was) instructing him
yābunayya
يَٰبُنَىَّ
"O my son!
لَا
(Do) not
tush'rik
تُشْرِكْ
associate partners
bil-lahi
بِٱللَّهِۖ
with Allah
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
l-shir'ka
ٱلشِّرْكَ
associating partners
laẓul'mun
لَظُلْمٌ
(is) surely an injustice
ʿaẓīmun
عَظِيمٌ
great"
And [mention, O Muhammad], when Luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, "O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allah. Indeed, association [with Him] is great injustice." (QS. [31] Luqman: 13)
Tafsir
14

وَوَصَّيْنَا الْاِنْسَانَ بِوَالِدَيْهِۚ حَمَلَتْهُ اُمُّهٗ وَهْنًا عَلٰى وَهْنٍ وَّفِصَالُهٗ فِيْ عَامَيْنِ اَنِ اشْكُرْ لِيْ وَلِوَالِدَيْكَۗ اِلَيَّ الْمَصِيْرُ ١٤

wawaṣṣaynā
وَوَصَّيْنَا
And We have enjoined
l-insāna
ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ
(upon) man
biwālidayhi
بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ
for his parents -
ḥamalathu
حَمَلَتْهُ
carried him
ummuhu
أُمُّهُۥ
his mother
wahnan
وَهْنًا
(in) weakness
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
upon
wahnin
وَهْنٍ
weakness
wafiṣāluhu
وَفِصَٰلُهُۥ
and his weaning
فِى
(is) in
ʿāmayni
عَامَيْنِ
two years
ani
أَنِ
that
ush'kur
ٱشْكُرْ
"Be grateful
لِى
to Me
waliwālidayka
وَلِوَٰلِدَيْكَ
and to your parents;
ilayya
إِلَىَّ
towards Me
l-maṣīru
ٱلْمَصِيرُ
(is) the destination
And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination. (QS. [31] Luqman: 14)
Tafsir
15

وَاِنْ جَاهَدٰكَ عَلٰٓى اَنْ تُشْرِكَ بِيْ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهٖ عِلْمٌ فَلَا تُطِعْهُمَا وَصَاحِبْهُمَا فِى الدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوْفًا ۖوَّاتَّبِعْ سَبِيْلَ مَنْ اَنَابَ اِلَيَّۚ ثُمَّ اِلَيَّ مَرْجِعُكُمْ فَاُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُوْنَ ١٥

wa-in
وَإِن
But if
jāhadāka
جَٰهَدَاكَ
they strive against you
ʿalā
عَلَىٰٓ
on
an
أَن
that
tush'rika
تُشْرِكَ
you associate partners
بِى
with Me
مَا
what
laysa
لَيْسَ
not
laka
لَكَ
you have
bihi
بِهِۦ
of it
ʿil'mun
عِلْمٌ
any knowledge
falā
فَلَا
then (do) not
tuṭiʿ'humā
تُطِعْهُمَاۖ
obey both of them
waṣāḥib'humā
وَصَاحِبْهُمَا
But accompany them
فِى
in
l-dun'yā
ٱلدُّنْيَا
the world
maʿrūfan
مَعْرُوفًاۖ
(with) kindness
wa-ittabiʿ
وَٱتَّبِعْ
and follow
sabīla
سَبِيلَ
(the) path
man
مَنْ
(of him) who
anāba
أَنَابَ
turns
ilayya
إِلَىَّۚ
to Me
thumma
ثُمَّ
Then
ilayya
إِلَىَّ
towards Me
marjiʿukum
مَرْجِعُكُمْ
(is) your return
fa-unabbi-ukum
فَأُنَبِّئُكُم
then I will inform you
bimā
بِمَا
of what
kuntum
كُنتُمْ
you used (to)
taʿmalūna
تَعْمَلُونَ
do"
But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do. (QS. [31] Luqman: 15)
Tafsir
16

يٰبُنَيَّ اِنَّهَآ اِنْ تَكُ مِثْقَالَ حَبَّةٍ مِّنْ خَرْدَلٍ فَتَكُنْ فِيْ صَخْرَةٍ اَوْ فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ اَوْ فِى الْاَرْضِ يَأْتِ بِهَا اللّٰهُ ۗاِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَطِيْفٌ خَبِيْرٌ ١٦

yābunayya
يَٰبُنَىَّ
"O my son!
innahā
إِنَّهَآ
Indeed it
in
إِن
if
taku
تَكُ
it be
mith'qāla
مِثْقَالَ
(the) weight
ḥabbatin
حَبَّةٍ
(of) a grain
min
مِّنْ
of
khardalin
خَرْدَلٍ
a mustard seed
fatakun
فَتَكُن
and it be
فِى
in
ṣakhratin
صَخْرَةٍ
a rock
aw
أَوْ
or
فِى
in
l-samāwāti
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
the heavens
aw
أَوْ
or
فِى
in
l-arḍi
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
yati
يَأْتِ
Allah will bring it forth
bihā
بِهَا
Allah will bring it forth
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُۚ
Allah will bring it forth
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
laṭīfun
لَطِيفٌ
(is) All-Subtle
khabīrun
خَبِيرٌ
All-Aware
[And Luqman said], "O my son, indeed if it [i.e., a wrong] should be the weight of a mustard seed and should be within a rock or [anywhere] in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Indeed, Allah is Subtle and Aware. (QS. [31] Luqman: 16)
Tafsir
17

يٰبُنَيَّ اَقِمِ الصَّلٰوةَ وَأْمُرْ بِالْمَعْرُوْفِ وَانْهَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَاصْبِرْ عَلٰى مَآ اَصَابَكَۗ اِنَّ ذٰلِكَ مِنْ عَزْمِ الْاُمُوْرِ ١٧

yābunayya
يَٰبُنَىَّ
O my son!
aqimi
أَقِمِ
Establish
l-ṣalata
ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ
the prayer
wamur
وَأْمُرْ
and enjoin
bil-maʿrūfi
بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ
[with] the right
wa-in'ha
وَٱنْهَ
and forbid
ʿani
عَنِ
from
l-munkari
ٱلْمُنكَرِ
the wrong
wa-iṣ'bir
وَٱصْبِرْ
and be patient
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
over
مَآ
what
aṣābaka
أَصَابَكَۖ
befalls you
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
that
min
مِنْ
(is) of
ʿazmi
عَزْمِ
the matters requiring determination
l-umūri
ٱلْأُمُورِ
the matters requiring determination
O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] resolve. (QS. [31] Luqman: 17)
Tafsir
18

وَلَا تُصَعِّرْ خَدَّكَ لِلنَّاسِ وَلَا تَمْشِ فِى الْاَرْضِ مَرَحًاۗ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ مُخْتَالٍ فَخُوْرٍۚ ١٨

walā
وَلَا
And (do) not
tuṣaʿʿir
تُصَعِّرْ
turn
khaddaka
خَدَّكَ
your cheek
lilnnāsi
لِلنَّاسِ
from men
walā
وَلَا
and (do) not
tamshi
تَمْشِ
walk
فِى
in
l-arḍi
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
maraḥan
مَرَحًاۖ
exultantly
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
لَا
(does) not
yuḥibbu
يُحِبُّ
like
kulla
كُلَّ
every
mukh'tālin
مُخْتَالٍ
self-conceited
fakhūrin
فَخُورٍ
boaster
And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful. (QS. [31] Luqman: 18)
Tafsir
19

وَاقْصِدْ فِيْ مَشْيِكَ وَاغْضُضْ مِنْ صَوْتِكَۗ اِنَّ اَنْكَرَ الْاَصْوَاتِ لَصَوْتُ الْحَمِيْرِ ࣖ ١٩

wa-iq'ṣid
وَٱقْصِدْ
And be moderate
فِى
in
mashyika
مَشْيِكَ
your pace
wa-ugh'ḍuḍ
وَٱغْضُضْ
and lower
min
مِن
[of]
ṣawtika
صَوْتِكَۚ
your voice
inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
ankara
أَنكَرَ
(the) harshest
l-aṣwāti
ٱلْأَصْوَٰتِ
(of all) sounds
laṣawtu
لَصَوْتُ
(is) surely (the) voice
l-ḥamīri
ٱلْحَمِيرِ
(of) the donkeys"
And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys." (QS. [31] Luqman: 19)
Tafsir
20

اَلَمْ تَرَوْا اَنَّ اللّٰهَ سَخَّرَ لَكُمْ مَّا فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَمَا فِى الْاَرْضِ وَاَسْبَغَ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعَمَهٗ ظَاهِرَةً وَّبَاطِنَةً ۗوَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يُّجَادِلُ فِى اللّٰهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَّلَا هُدًى وَّلَا كِتٰبٍ مُّنِيْرٍ ٢٠

أَلَمْ
Do not
taraw
تَرَوْا۟
you see
anna
أَنَّ
that
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
sakhara
سَخَّرَ
has subjected
lakum
لَكُم
to you
مَّا
whatever
فِى
(is) in
l-samāwāti
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
the heavens
wamā
وَمَا
and whatever
فِى
(is) in
l-arḍi
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
wa-asbagha
وَأَسْبَغَ
and amply bestowed
ʿalaykum
عَلَيْكُمْ
upon you
niʿamahu
نِعَمَهُۥ
His Bounties
ẓāhiratan
ظَٰهِرَةً
apparent
wabāṭinatan
وَبَاطِنَةًۗ
and hidden?
wamina
وَمِنَ
But of
l-nāsi
ٱلنَّاسِ
the people
man
مَن
(is he) who
yujādilu
يُجَٰدِلُ
disputes
فِى
about
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
bighayri
بِغَيْرِ
without
ʿil'min
عِلْمٍ
knowledge
walā
وَلَا
and not
hudan
هُدًى
guidance
walā
وَلَا
and not
kitābin
كِتَٰبٍ
a book
munīrin
مُّنِيرٍ
enlightening
Do you not see that Allah has made subject to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth and amply bestowed upon you His favors, [both] apparent and unapparent? But of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening Book [from Him]. (QS. [31] Luqman: 20)
Tafsir
