Al-Qur'an Surah Ar-Rum Verse 57

Ar-Rum [30]: 57 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

فَيَوْمَىِٕذٍ لَّا يَنْفَعُ الَّذِيْنَ ظَلَمُوْا مَعْذِرَتُهُمْ وَلَا هُمْ يُسْتَعْتَبُوْنَ (الروم : ٣٠)

fayawma-idhin
فَيَوْمَئِذٍ
So that Day
لَّا
not
yanfaʿu
يَنفَعُ
will profit
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
ẓalamū
ظَلَمُوا۟
wronged
maʿdhiratuhum
مَعْذِرَتُهُمْ
their excuses
walā
وَلَا
and not
hum
هُمْ
they
yus'taʿtabūna
يُسْتَعْتَبُونَ
will be allowed to make amends

Transliteration:

Fa Yawma'izil laa yanfa'ul lazeena zalamoo ma'ziratu hum wa laa hum yusta'taboon (QS. ar-Rūm:57)

English / Sahih Translation:

So that Day, their excuse will not benefit those who wronged, nor will they be asked to appease [Allah]. (QS. Ar-Rum, ayah 57)

So, on that Day, their apology will not benefit the wrongdoers, nor will they be asked to repent.

Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran

So on that Day the wrongdoers’ excuses will not benefit them, nor will they be allowed to appease ˹their Lord˺.

So that will be the Day when the excuses of the wrong-doers will not avail them, nor will they be asked to make amends.

Their excuses will be of no avail to the sinners on that day, and they will not be allowed to beg for favour.

So on that day the unjust will not benefit from their excuses, nor will anyone ask them for compensation.

On that day, the excuses of the wrongdoers will not benefit them, nor will they be asked to propitiate [Allah].

On that Day their excuses will be of no avail to the wrongdoers (who denied God or associated partners with Him), nor will they be allowed to make amends (nor offer regrets to escape the punishment).

So on that Day no excuses (in their defence) will avail those who had acted unjustly, nor will they be allowed to approach the threshold (to be admitted into the fold of the near ones of God).

English Literal

So (on) that day those who caused injustice/oppression, their apologies/excuses do not benefit (them), and nor they, they be allowed to offer reconciliation/appeasement .

So on that day the unjust will not benefit from their excuses, nor will anyone ask them for compensation.

And those who are given knowledge and faith will say, "Certainly (indeed, in truth) you tarried according to the ordinance of Allah till the Day of Resurrection, so this is the Day of Resurrection, but you were not aware."

So on that Day no excuse of theirs will avail those who did wrong (by associating partners in worship with Allah, and by denying the Day of Resurrection), nor will they be allowed (then) to return to seek Allah's Pleasure (by having Islamic Faith with righteous deeds and by giving up polytheism, sins and crimes with repentance).

And the day when the Hour comes, the guilty will swear: They did not tarry but an hour. Thus are they ever turned away.

So, on that Day no excuse of theirs will avail those who did wrong, nor will they be allowed to return to seek (Allah's) pleasure.

So on that Day their pleas shall be of no avail, nor will they be allowed to make amends.

On that Day, the sinners’ excuses will not benefit them, nor will they be excused.

Tafsir jalalayn

So on that day their excuses, for denying it, will not profit (read l yanfa`u or l tanfa`u) the evildoers, nor will they be asked to make amends (yusta`tabna means `they will [not] be asked for al-`utb', which denotes `a return to that which pleases God').

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

فَيَوْمَيِذٍ

So, on that Day,

meaning, the Day of Resurrection,

لاَّا يَنفَعُ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مَعْذِرَتُهُمْ

no excuse of theirs will avail those who did wrong,

means, their excuses for what they did.

وَلَا هُمْ يُسْتَعْتَبُونَ



nor will they be allowed (then) to return to seek (Allah's) pleasure.

means, they will not be allowed to return to this world.

This is like the Ayah,

وَإِن يَسْتَعْتِبُواْ فَمَا هُم مِّنَ الْمُعْتَبِينَ

and if they seek to please (Allah), yet they are not of those who will ever be allowed to please (Allah). (41;24)
