Ali 'Imran [3]: 162 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

اَفَمَنِ اتَّبَعَ رِضْوَانَ اللّٰهِ كَمَنْۢ بَاۤءَ بِسَخَطٍ مِّنَ اللّٰهِ وَمَأْوٰىهُ جَهَنَّمُ ۗ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيْرُ (آل عمران : ٣)

afamani
أَفَمَنِ
So is (the one) who
ittabaʿa
ٱتَّبَعَ
pursues
riḍ'wāna
رِضْوَٰنَ
(the) pleasure
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
(of) Allah
kaman
كَمَنۢ
like (the one) who
bāa
بَآءَ
draws
bisakhaṭin
بِسَخَطٍ
on (himself) wrath
mina
مِّنَ
of
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
wamawāhu
وَمَأْوَىٰهُ
and his abode
jahannamu
جَهَنَّمُۚ
(is) hell
wabi'sa
وَبِئْسَ
and wretched
l-maṣīru
ٱلْمَصِيرُ
(is) the destination?

Transliteration:

Afamanit taba'a Ridwaanal laahi kamam baaa'a bisakhatim minal laahi wa maawaahu Jahannam; wa bi'sal maseer (QS. ʾĀl ʿImrān:162)

English / Sahih Translation:

So is one who pursues the pleasure of Allah like one who brings upon himself the anger of Allah and whose refuge is Hell? And wretched is the destination. (QS. Ali 'Imran, ayah 162)

How then, could one who submits to the pleasure of Allah be equal to him who returns with displeasure from Allah? His ultimate place is the Fire; and what an evil end it is!

English Literal

Is that who followed God`s acceptance/approval/satisfaction, as who returned with hatred/anger/dissatisfaction from God, and his shelter/refuge (is) Hell , and how bad (is) the end/destination?

And it is not for a prophet to act dishonestly. And whoever acts dishonestly will bring his dishonesty on the day of Resurrection. Then shall every soul be paid back fully what it has earned, and they will not be wronged.

Can one who seeks the pleasure of God, be like one who incurs the wrath of God and whose abode shall be Hell -- an evil destination?

Is someone who pursues God's approval the same as someone who incurs God's wrath and his refuge is Hell—the miserable destination?

Tafsir jalalayn

Is he who follows God's beatitude, being obedient and not defrauding, like him who is laden, [one who] returns, with God's anger, because of his disobedience and fraud, whose abode is Hell? An evil journey's end, a resort, it is!

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Is then one who follows (seeks) the pleasure of Allah like the one who draws on himself the wrath of Allah! His abode is Hell, and worse indeed is that destination!

This refers to those seeking what pleases Allah by obeying His legislation, thus earning His pleasure and tremendous rewards, while being saved from His severe torment.

This type of person is not similar to one who earns Allah's anger, has no means of escaping it and who will reside in Jahannam on the Day of Resurrection, and what an evil destination it is.

There are many similar statements in the Qur'an, such as,

أَفَمَن يَعْلَمُ أَنَّمَأ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِن رَبِّكَ الْحَقُّ كَمَنْ هُوَ أَعْمَى

Shall he then who knows that what has been revealed unto you (O Muhammad) from your Lord is the truth be like him who is blind! (13;19)

and,

أَفَمَن وَعَدْنَـهُ وَعْداً حَسَناً فَهُوَ لَاقِيهِ كَمَن مَّتَّعْنَاهُ مَتَـعَ الْحَيَوةِ الدُّنْيَا

Is he whom We have promised an excellent promise (Paradise) which he will find true, like him whom We have made to enjoy the luxuries of the life of (this) world! (28;61)

Allah then said
