Al-Qur'an Surah Ali 'Imran Verse 149
Ali 'Imran [3]: 149 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer
يٰٓاَيُّهَا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْٓا اِنْ تُطِيْعُوا الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا يَرُدُّوْكُمْ عَلٰٓى اَعْقَابِكُمْ فَتَنْقَلِبُوْا خٰسِرِيْنَ (آل عمران : ٣)

- يَٰٓأَيُّهَا
- O you
- alladhīna
- ٱلَّذِينَ
- who
- āmanū
- ءَامَنُوٓا۟
- believe!
- in
- إِن
- If
- tuṭīʿū
- تُطِيعُوا۟
- you obey
- alladhīna
- ٱلَّذِينَ
- those who
- kafarū
- كَفَرُوا۟
- disbelieve
- yaruddūkum
- يَرُدُّوكُمْ
- they will turn you back
- ʿalā
- عَلَىٰٓ
- on
- aʿqābikum
- أَعْقَٰبِكُمْ
- your heels
- fatanqalibū
- فَتَنقَلِبُوا۟
- then you will turn back
- khāsirīna
- خَٰسِرِينَ
- (as) losers
Transliteration:
Yaaa 'aiyuhal lazeena aamanoo in tutee'ullazeena kafaroo yaruddookum 'alaaa a'qaabkum fatanqaliboo khaasireen(QS. ʾĀl ʿImrān:149)
English / Sahih Translation:
O you who have believed, if you obey those who disbelieve, they will turn you back on your heels, and you will [then] become losers. (QS. Ali 'Imran, ayah 149)

Tafseer Ibn Kathir
The Prohibition of Obeying the Disbelievers; the Cause of Defeat at Uhud
Allah warns His believing servants against obeying the disbelievers and hypocrites, because such obedience leads to utter destruction in this life and the Hereafter.
This is why Allah said,
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ امَنُوَاْ إِن تُطِيعُواْ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ يَرُدُّوكُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَابِكُمْ فَتَنقَلِبُواْ خَاسِرِينَ
O you who believe! If you obey those who disbelieve, they will send you back on your heels, and you will turn back (from faith) as losers.
Allah also commands the believers to obey Him, take Him as their protector, seek His aid and trust in Him.
Allah said,
بَلِ اللّهُ مَوْلَاكُمْ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ النَّاصِرِينَ
