Al-Qur'an Surah Ali 'Imran Verse 105
Ali 'Imran [3]: 105 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer
وَلَا تَكُوْنُوْا كَالَّذِيْنَ تَفَرَّقُوْا وَاخْتَلَفُوْا مِنْۢ بَعْدِ مَا جَاۤءَهُمُ الْبَيِّنٰتُ ۗ وَاُولٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيْمٌ ۙ (آل عمران : ٣)
- walā
- وَلَا
- And (do) not
- takūnū
- تَكُونُوا۟
- be
- ka-alladhīna
- كَٱلَّذِينَ
- like those who
- tafarraqū
- تَفَرَّقُوا۟
- became divided
- wa-ikh'talafū
- وَٱخْتَلَفُوا۟
- and differed
- min
- مِنۢ
- from
- baʿdi
- بَعْدِ
- after
- mā
- مَا
- what
- jāahumu
- جَآءَهُمُ
- came to them
- l-bayinātu
- ٱلْبَيِّنَٰتُۚ
- the clear proofs
- wa-ulāika
- وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ
- And those
- lahum
- لَهُمْ
- for them
- ʿadhābun
- عَذَابٌ
- (is) a punishment
- ʿaẓīmun
- عَظِيمٌ
- great
Transliteration:
Wa laa takoonoo kallazeena tafarraqoo wakhtalafoo mim ba'di maa jaaa'ahumul baiyinaat; wa ulaaa'ika lahum 'azaabun 'azeem(QS. ʾĀl ʿImrān:105)
English / Sahih Translation:
And do not be like the ones who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them. And those will have a great punishment (QS. Ali 'Imran, ayah 105)

Those whose faces have turned dark will be told: 'Did you fall into unbelief after you had been blessed with belief? Taste, then, chastise- ment for your unbelief.' And those whose faces have turned bright, they will be in the mercy of Allah, and therein they shall abide. These are the mes sages of Allah which We recite to you in truth, and Allah desires no wrong to the people of the world. To Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth, and to Allah are all matters referred for decision.

So be not like those who became disunited and differed among themselves after clear proofs had come to them. For them is great suffering.

Tafsir jalalayn
Be not as those who scattered, in their religion, and disputed, over it, after the clear proofs came to them, and these are the Jews and the Christians, those there awaits a mighty chastisement.
Tafseer Ibn Kathir
وَلَا تَكُونُواْ كَالَّذِينَ تَفَرَّقُواْ وَاخْتَلَفُواْ مِن بَعْدِ مَا جَاءهُمُ الْبَيِّنَاتُ
And be not as those who divided and differed among themselves after the clear proofs had come to them.
In this Ayah, Allah forbids this Ummah from imitating the division and discord of the nations that came before them. These nations also abandoned enjoining righteousness and forbidding evil, although they had proof of its necessity.
وَأُوْلَـيِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ
It is they for whom there is an awful torment.
Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Amir Abdullah bin Luhay said,
"We performed Hajj with Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan. When we arrived at Makkah, he stood up after praying Zuhr and said, `The Messenger of Allah said,
إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابَيْنِ افْتَرَقُوا فِي دِينِهِمْ عَلى ثِنْتَيْنِ وَسَبْعِينَ مِلَّةً وَإِنَّ هذِهِ الاُْمَّةَ سَتَفْتَرِقُ عَلى ثَلَثٍ وَسَبْعِينَ مِلَّةً يَعْنِي الاَْهْوَاءَ كُلُّهَا فِي النَّارِ إِلاَّ وَاحِدَةً وَهِيَ الْجَمَاعَةُ
وَإِنَّهُ سَيَخْرُجُ فِي أُمَّتِي أَقْوَامٌ تَجَارَى بِهِمْ تِلْكَ الاْإَهْوَاءُ كَمَا يَتَجَارَى الْكَلَبُ بِصَاحِبِه لَاإ يَبْقَى مِنْهُ عِرْقٌ وَلَاإ مَفْصِلٌ إِلاَّ دَخَلَه
The People of the Two Scriptures divided into seventy-two sects. This Ummah will divide into seventy-three sects, all in the Fire except one, that is, the Jama`ah.
Some of my Ummah will be guided by desire, like one who is infected by rabies; no vein or joint will be saved from these desires.
Muawiyah said next;
By Allah, O Arabs! If you do not adhere to what came to you from your Prophet then other people are even more prone not to adhere to it."
Similar was recorded by Abu Dawud from Ahmad bin Hanbal and Muhammad bin Yahya.
