Al-'Ankabut [29]: 33 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَلَمَّآ اَنْ جَاۤءَتْ رُسُلُنَا لُوْطًا سِيْۤءَ بِهِمْ وَضَاقَ بِهِمْ ذَرْعًا وَّقَالُوْا لَا تَخَفْ وَلَا تَحْزَنْ ۗاِنَّا مُنَجُّوْكَ وَاَهْلَكَ اِلَّا امْرَاَتَكَ كَانَتْ مِنَ الْغٰبِرِيْنَ (العنكبوت : ٢٩)

And they said

إِنَّا
Indeed we
munajjūka
مُنَجُّوكَ
(will) save you
wa-ahlaka
وَأَهْلَكَ
and your family
illā
إِلَّا
except
im'ra-ataka
ٱمْرَأَتَكَ
your wife
kānat
كَانَتْ
She
mina
مِنَ
(is) of
l-ghābirīna
ٱلْغَٰبِرِينَ
those who remain behind

Transliteration:

Wa lammaaa an jaaa'at Rusulunaa Lootan seee'a bihim wa daaqa bihim zar'anw wa qaaloo laa takhaf wa laa tahzan innaa munajjooka wa ahlaka illam ra ataka kaanat minal ghaabireen (QS. al-ʿAnkabūt:33)

English / Sahih Translation:

And when Our messengers [i.e., angels] came to Lot, he was distressed for them and felt for them great discomfort. They said, "Fear not, nor grieve. Indeed, we will save you and your family, except your wife; she is to be of those who remain behind. (QS. Al-'Ankabut, ayah 33)

And when Our messengers came to LūT, he grieved for them and his heart was straitened because of them, but they said, “We are going to save you and your family, except your wife who will be among those remaining behind.

And when Our messenger-angels came to Lot, he was distressed and worried by their arrival.[[ Since the angels came in the form of handsome men, Lot was worried for the dignity and safety of his guests among his people—not knowing that they were angels. ]] They reassured ˹him˺, “Do not fear, nor grieve. We will surely deliver you and your family—except your wife, who is one of the doomed.

When Our emissaries came to Lot he was distressed and embarrassed on their account. They said: “Do not fear nor be distressed. We shall save you and all your household except your wife who is among those that will stay behind.

So, when Our messengers came to Lot, he was worried on their account as he was unable to protect them. They said: "Have no fear or regret. We will certainly save you and your family except your wife, for she is one of those who will stay behind.

And when Our sent angels came to Lut, he was unhappy at their arrival and was depressed – and they said, “Do not fear or grieve; we will surely rescue you and your family, except your wife, who is of those who will stay behind.”

And when Our messengers came to Lot, he was distressed on their account and in a predicament for their sake. But they said, ‘Do not be afraid, nor grieve! We shall deliver you and your family, except your wife: she will be one of those who remain behind.

We are going to save you and your family except your wife who (as has been decreed) is among those who will stay behind (and be destroyed).

And when Our messengers came to Lot he felt distressed on account of their (coming) for he felt helpless to give them protection. But they (- the messenger) said, `Have no fear and do not grieve, (Allâh promises you protection saying,) "We will deliver you and all your household except your wife (who will not leave the place stricken with calamity and) who is among those staying behind.

English Literal

And when that Our messengers came (to) Lot he felt bad/evil/harm with them, and he was impatient with them/unable to do or accomplish what ought to be done (became troubled), and they said: "Do not fear, and nor be sad/grievous, that we are saving/rescuing you and your family/people except your woman (wife) was from the remaining behind."

Said he, "Verily, in it is Lot." They said, "We are best aware of who is therein; we shall of a surety save him and his people, except his wife, who is of those who lag behind."

And when Our Messengers came to Lout (Lot), he was grieved because of them, and felt straitened on their account. They said: "Have no fear, and do not grieve! Truly, we shall save you and your family, except your wife, she will be of those who remain behind (i.e. she will be destroyed along with those who will be destroyed from her folk).

Then, when Our envoys came to Lot, they were mistreated, and he was troubled and distressed on their account. They said, “Do not fear, nor grieve. We will save you and your family, except for your wife, who will remain behind.”

Tafsir jalalayn

And when Our messengers came to Lot, he was distressed on their account, he was grieved because of them, and he was constrained [unable] to help them, because they had handsome faces, dressed as guests, and thus he feared for them from his people. So they informed him that they were the messengers of his Lord. But they said, `Do not be afraid, nor grieve. We shall surely deliver you (read munajjka or munjka) and your family, except your wife; she is of those who will remain behind (ahlaka, `your family', is in the accusative as a supplement to the [suffixed direct object pronoun] kf [of munajjka, `We shall surely deliver you']).

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَلَمَّا أَن جَاءتْ رُسُلُنَا لُوطًا

And when Our messengers came to Lut,

Then the angels left him and visited Lut in the form of handsome young men. When he saw them like that,

سِيءَ بِهِمْ وَضَاقَ بِهِمْ ذَرْعًا

he was grieved because of them, and felt straitened on their account.

means, he was worried since if he had them as guests then he was afraid for them and what his people might do to them, but if he did not host them, he was still afraid of what might happen to them. At that point he did not know who they were.

وَقَالُوا لَا تَخَفْ وَلَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّا مُنَجُّوكَ وَأَهْلَكَ إِلاَّ امْرَأَتَكَ كَانَتْ مِنَ الْغَابِرِينَ



إِنَّا مُنزِلُونَ عَلَى أَهْلِ هَذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِ رِجْزًا مِّنَ السَّمَاء بِمَا كَانُوا يَفْسُقُونَ
