Al-Qasas [28]: 80 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَقَالَ الَّذِيْنَ اُوْتُوا الْعِلْمَ وَيْلَكُمْ ثَوَابُ اللّٰهِ خَيْرٌ لِّمَنْ اٰمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا ۚوَلَا يُلَقّٰىهَآ اِلَّا الصّٰبِرُوْنَ (القصص : ٢٨)

waqāla
وَقَالَ
But said
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
ūtū
أُوتُوا۟
were given
l-ʿil'ma
ٱلْعِلْمَ
the knowledge
waylakum
وَيْلَكُمْ
"Woe to you!
thawābu
ثَوَابُ
(The) reward
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
(of) Allah
khayrun
خَيْرٌ
(is) better
liman
لِّمَنْ
for (he) who
āmana
ءَامَنَ
believes
waʿamila
وَعَمِلَ
and does
ṣāliḥan
صَٰلِحًا
righteous (deeds)
walā
وَلَا
And not
yulaqqāhā
يُلَقَّىٰهَآ
it is granted
illā
إِلَّا
except
l-ṣābirūna
ٱلصَّٰبِرُونَ
(to) the patient ones"

Transliteration:

Wa qaalal lazeena ootul 'ilma wailakum sawaabul laahi khairul liman aamana wa 'amila saalihaa; wa laa yulaq qaahaaa illas saabiroon (QS. al-Q̈aṣaṣ:80)

English / Sahih Translation:

But those who had been given knowledge said, "Woe to you! The reward of Allah is better for he who believes and does righteousness. And none are granted it except the patient." (QS. Al-Qasas, ayah 80)

Mufti Taqi Usmani

And said those who were given knowledge, “Woe to you, Allah’s reward is much better for him who believes and acts righteously. But this is given to none but to those who observe restraint.”

But those gifted with knowledge said, “Shame on you! Allah’s reward is far better for those who believe and do good. But none will attain this except the steadfast.”

And those who had been vouchsafed the knowledge said: woe unto you! the reward of Allah is best for him who believeth and worketh righteously and none shall attain it except the patient.

But those who had been granted (true) knowledge said; "Alas for you! The reward of Allah (in the Hereafter) is best for those who believe and work righteousness; but this none shall attain, save those who steadfastly persevere (in good)."

But those endowed with true knowledge said: "Woe to you. The reward of Allah is best for those who believe and act righteously. But none except those who are patient shall attain to this."

But those who knew better, said: "Alack-a-day! God's guerdon is better for those who believe and do the right. Only those who persevere will receive it."

And said those who were given the knowledge, “Woe to you – the reward of Allah is better for one who accepts faith and does good deeds; and only those who are patient will receive it.”

Ali Quli Qarai

Those who were given knowledge said [to them], ‘Woe to you! Allah’s reward is better for someone who has faith and acts righteously, and no one will receive it except the patient.’

But those who had been granted (true) knowledge said: "Woe to you! God’s reward for any who believes and does good, righteous deeds is better by far. But none save the patient (who persevere through adversities, in obedience to God and avoidance of sins) can ever attain to it."

Amatul Rahman Omar

But the men of knowledge said, `Woe to you! The reward which Allâh has for those who believe and do good deeds is much better (than all this), but it shall be granted only to those who are patiently persevering.´

English Literal

And those who were given the knowledge said: "Your calamity , God`s reward/compensation (is) best to who believed, and made/did correct/righteous deeds, and none receives/meets/finds it except the patient."

And said those who were given the knowledge, “Woe to you - the reward of Allah is better for one who accepts faith and does good deeds; and only those who are patient will receive it.”

And he went out amongst the people in his pomp. Those who desired the life of this world said, "O would that we had the like of what Qarun has been given! Verily, he is lord of mighty fortune!"

But those who had been given (religious) knowledge said: "Woe to you! The Reward of Allah (in the Hereafter) is better for those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and this none shall attain except those who are patient (in following the truth)."

He said: I have been given this only on account of the knowledge I have. Did he not know that Allah had destroyed him generations who were mightier in strength than he and greater in assemblage? And the guilty are not questioned about their sins.

And those who were given the knowledge said: Woe to you! Allah's reward is better for him who believes and does good, and none is made to receive this except the patient.

The people who had received knowledge would tell them, "Woe to you! The reward of God is far better for the righteously striving believers. No one can receive such reward except those who exercise patience."

But those to whom knowledge had been given said: 'Alas for you! Better is the reward of Allah for him who believes and does good works; but none shall receive it except the patient'

But those who had been given knowledge said: "Woe to you! The reward of Allah is better for those who believe and do righteous deeds, and this none shall attain except the patient."

but those who had been given knowledge said, "Woe to you, God's reward is better for those who believe and do good deeds: and it is awarded only to those who are steadfast."

But those who were given knowledge said, “Woe to you! The reward of God is better for those who believe and do righteous deeds.” Yet none attains it except the steadfast.

Tafsir jalalayn

But those to whom knowledge had been given, [knowledge] of what God had promised in the Hereafter, said, to them; `Woe to you! (waylakum, is an expression of reprimand) God's reward, of Paradise in the Hereafter, is better for him who believes and acts righteously, than what Korah has been given in this world; and none will obtain it, namely, the Paradise that is given as a reward, except those who are steadfast', in [their adherence to] obedience and [refrain] from disobedience.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ

But those who had been given knowledge said;

When the people of beneficial knowledge heard this, they said to them;

وَيْلَكُمْ ثَوَابُ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ لِّمَنْ امَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا

Woe to you! The reward of Allah is better for those who believe and do righteous deeds,

Allah's reward to His believing, righteous servants in the Hereafter is better than what you see,' as is reported in the authentic Hadith;

يَقُولُ اللهُ تَعَالَى أَعْدَدْتُ لِعِبَادِي الصَّالِحِينَ مَا لَا عَيْنٌ رَأَتْ وَلَا أُذُنٌ سَمِعَتْ وَلَا خَطَرَ عَلَى قَلْبِ بَشَرٍ وَاقْرَءُوا إِنْ شِيْتُمْ

Allah has prepared for His righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and the heart of a human cannot comprehend. Recite, if you wish;

فَلَ تَعْلَمُ نَفْسٌ مَّأ أُخْفِىَ لَهُم مِّن قُرَّةِ أَعْيُنٍ جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُواْ يَعْمَلُونَ

No person knows what is kept hidden for them of joy as a reward for what they used to do. (32;17)

وَلَا يُلَقَّاهَا إِلاَّ الصَّابِرُونَ



and this none shall attain except the patient.

As-Suddi said;

"None shall reach Paradise except for the patient" -- as if this were the completion of the statement made by the people of knowledge.

Ibn Jarir said,

"This applies only to those who patiently forsake the love of this world, seeking the Hereafter. It is as if this is part of what the people of knowledge said, but it is made part of the Words of Allah, stating this fact.
