Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Qasas Verse 39
Al-Qasas [28]: 39 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer
وَاسْتَكْبَرَ هُوَ وَجُنُوْدُهٗ فِى الْاَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ وَظَنُّوْٓا اَنَّهُمْ اِلَيْنَا لَا يُرْجَعُوْنَ (القصص : ٢٨)
- wa-is'takbara
- وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ
- And he was arrogant
- huwa
- هُوَ
- And he was arrogant
- wajunūduhu
- وَجُنُودُهُۥ
- and his hosts
- fī
- فِى
- in
- l-arḍi
- ٱلْأَرْضِ
- the land
- bighayri
- بِغَيْرِ
- without
- l-ḥaqi
- ٱلْحَقِّ
- right
- waẓannū
- وَظَنُّوٓا۟
- and they thought
- annahum
- أَنَّهُمْ
- that they
- ilaynā
- إِلَيْنَا
- to Us
- lā
- لَا
- not
- yur'jaʿūna
- يُرْجَعُونَ
- will be returned
Transliteration:
Wastakbara huwa wa junooduhoo fil ardi bighairil haqqi wa zannooo annahum ilainaa laa yurja'oon(QS. al-Q̈aṣaṣ:39)
English / Sahih Translation:
And he was arrogant, he and his soldiers, in the land, without right, and they thought that they would not be returned to Us. (QS. Al-Qasas, ayah 39)

And he and his hosts acted arrogantly in the land, the land of Egypt, without right, and thought they would not return to Us (read active yarji`na, or passive yurja`na, `they would [not] be brought back').
Tafseer Ibn Kathir
And he and his armies were arrogant in the land, without right, and they thought that they would never return to Us.
means, they were arrogant oppressors who spread much mischief in the land, and they believed that there would be no Resurrection.
فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ
So, your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them). (89;13-14)
