Al-Qur'an Surah An-Naml Verse 45

An-Naml [27]: 45 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

وَلَقَدْ اَرْسَلْنَآ اِلٰى ثَمُوْدَ اَخَاهُمْ صٰلِحًا اَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللّٰهَ فَاِذَا هُمْ فَرِيْقٰنِ يَخْتَصِمُوْنَ (النمل : ٢٧)

walaqad
وَلَقَدْ
And certainly
arsalnā
أَرْسَلْنَآ
We sent

إِلَىٰ

thamūda
ثَمُودَ
Thamud
akhāhum
أَخَاهُمْ
their brother

Then behold!

(became) two parties
yakhtaṣimūna
يَخْتَصِمُونَ
quarreling

Transliteration:

Wa laqad arsalnaaa ilaa Samoda akhaahum Saalihan ani'budul lahha fa izaa hum fareeqaani yakhtasimoon (QS. an-Naml:45)

English / Sahih Translation:

And We had certainly sent to Thamud their brother Saleh, [saying], "Worship Allah," and at once they were two parties conflicting. (QS. An-Naml, ayah 45)

And We sent to Thamūd their brother SāliH saying (to them), “Worship Allah”. Then suddenly they became two groups quarrelling with each other.

And We certainly sent to the people of Thamûd their brother Ṣâliḥ, proclaiming, “Worship Allah,” but they suddenly split into two opposing groups.[[ i.e., believers and disbelievers. ]]

And We sent to Thamud their brother Salih (with the Message): "Serve Allah," but all of a sudden they became split into two quarrelling factions.

And (likewise) We sent to Thamûd their kinsman Sâlih, (who said), `Worship Allâh.´ But (as soon as they heard this preaching) they broke up into two factions who contended with each another.

English Literal

And We had sent to Thamud their brother Saleh : "That worship God, so then they are two groups/parties disputing/controverting .

And indeed We sent to the Thamud, their fellowman Saleh that, “Worship Allah”, thereupon they became two parties quarrelling.

And it was said to her, "Enter the court." And when she saw it, she thought it was a pool, and she bared her legs (tucked up her skirt to go into it). Said he, "Verily, it is a court paved with glass!" Said she, "My Lord! Verily, I have wronged my soul, but I do now Surrender ( i.e. in Islam) with Solomon to the Lord of the Worlds!"

And indeed We sent to Thamud their brother Salih (Saleh), saying: "Worship Allah (Alone and none else). Then look! They became two parties (believers and disbelievers) quarreling with each other."

And that which she worshipped besides Allah prevented her; for she was of a disbelieving people.

And indeed We sent to Thamud their brother Salih, (saying): "Worship Allah." Then look! They became two parties quarreling with each other.

To Thamud We sent their brother Salih. He said, "Serve none but God." But they divided themselves into two factions contending with one another.

And We sent to Thamood their brother Saleh: “Worship God.” But they became two disputing factions.

Tafsir jalalayn

And verily We sent to Thamd their brother, in terms of [his belonging to the same] tribe, Slih, with the following [decree]; `Worship God!', affirm His Oneness. And lo! they [then] became two parties quarrelling with one another, over religion, one party having become believers upon his arrival as messenger to them and the other party disbelievers.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Salih and Thamud

Allah tells;

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَى ثَمُودَ أَخَاهُمْ صَالِحًا أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ

And indeed We sent to Thamud their brother Salih, (saying);"Worship Allah."

Allah tells us about Thamud and how they responded to their Prophet Salih, when Allah sent him to call them to worship Allah alone, with no partner or associate.

فَإِذَا هُمْ فَرِيقَانِ يَخْتَصِمُونَ



Then look! They became two parties quarreling with each other.

Mujahid said,

"These were believers and disbelievers."

This is like the Ayah,

قَالَ الْمَلَ الَّذِينَ اسْتَكْبَرُواْ مِن قَوْمِهِ لِلَّذِينَ اسْتُضْعِفُواْ لِمَنْ ءامَنَ مِنْهُمْ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ صَـلِحاً مُّرْسَلٌ مّن رَّبّهِ قَالُواْ إِنَّا بِمَأ أُرْسِلَ بِهِ مُوْمِنُونَ


قَالَ الَّذِينَ اسْتَكْبَرُواْ إِنَّا بِالَّذِى ءامَنتُمْ بِهِ كَـفِرُونَ

The leaders of those who were arrogant among his people said to those who were counted weak -- to such of them as believed;"Know you that Salih is one sent from his Lord."

They said;"We indeed believe in that with which he has been sent."

Those who were arrogant said;"Verily, we disbelieve in that which you believe in." (7;75-76
