Al-Qur'an Surah An-Naml Verse 18

An-Naml [27]: 18 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

حَتّٰىٓ اِذَآ اَتَوْا عَلٰى وَادِ النَّمْلِۙ قَالَتْ نَمْلَةٌ يّٰٓاَيُّهَا النَّمْلُ ادْخُلُوْا مَسٰكِنَكُمْۚ لَا يَحْطِمَنَّكُمْ سُلَيْمٰنُ وَجُنُوْدُهٗۙ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُوْنَ (النمل : ٢٧)

your dwellings

lest not crush you
yaḥṭimannakum
يَحْطِمَنَّكُمْ
lest not crush you
sulaymānu
سُلَيْمَٰنُ
Sulaiman
wajunūduhu
وَجُنُودُهُۥ
and his hosts
wahum
وَهُمْ
while they
لَا
(do) not perceive"
yashʿurūna
يَشْعُرُونَ
(do) not perceive"

Transliteration:

hattaaa izaaa ataw 'alaa waadin namli qaalat namlatuny yaaa aiyuhan namlud khuloo masaakinakum laa yahtimannakum Sulaimaanu wa junooduhoo wa hum laa yash'uroon (QS. an-Naml:18)

English / Sahih Translation:

Until, when they came upon the valley of the ants, an ant said, "O ants, enter your dwellings that you not be crushed by Solomon and his soldiers while they perceive not." (QS. An-Naml, ayah 18)

until when they reached the valley of the ants, one of the ants said, “O ants, enter your dwelling places, lest Sulaimān and his armies crush you unknowingly.”

English Literal

Until when they passed by the ants` valley, an ant said: "You, you the ants, enter your residences, (let) not Soliman and his warriors smash/destroy you (E) and they are not feeling/sensing

Until, when they came upon the Valley of Ants, an ant said, “O ants! Go into your nests, lest Solomon and his troops crush you without noticing.”

Tafsir jalalayn

When they came to the Valley of the Ants -- which is [located] either in T'if or in Syria, and whose ants are either small or large -- an ant, the queen ant, who had seen Solomon's hosts, said, `O ants, enter your dwellings, lest Solomon and his hosts crush you while they are unaware!' -- the ants are likened to rational beings in their use of the latter's speech.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

حَتَّى إِذَا أَتَوْا عَلَى وَادِي النَّمْلِ

Till, when they came to the valley of the ants,

meaning, when Suleiman, the soldiers and the army with him crossed the valley of the ants,

قَالَتْ نَمْلَةٌ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّمْلُ ادْخُلُوا مَسَاكِنَكُمْ لَاا يَحْطِمَنَّكُمْ سُلَيْمَانُ وَجُنُودُهُ وَهُمْ لَاا يَشْعُرُونَ



one of the ants said;"O ants! Enter your dwellings, lest Suleiman and his armies should crush you, while they perceive not."

Suleiman, peace be upon him, understood what the ant said
