Al-Qur'an Surah Ash-Shu'ara Verse 74
Ash-Shu'ara [26]: 74 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer
قَالُوْا بَلْ وَجَدْنَآ اٰبَاۤءَنَا كَذٰلِكَ يَفْعَلُوْنَ (الشعراء : ٢٦)
- qālū
- قَالُوا۟
- They said
- bal
- بَلْ
- "Nay
- wajadnā
- وَجَدْنَآ
- but we found
- ābāanā
- ءَابَآءَنَا
- our forefathers
- kadhālika
- كَذَٰلِكَ
- like that -
- yafʿalūna
- يَفْعَلُونَ
- doing"
Transliteration:
Qaaloo bal wajadnaaa aabaaa 'anaa kazaalika yaf'aloon(QS. aš-Šuʿarāʾ:74)
English / Sahih Translation:
They said, "But we found our fathers doing thus." (QS. Ash-Shu'ara, ayah 74)

They said, “No, but we have found our fathers doing like this.”

They said, `Rather, we found our fathers so doing', that is, doing the same as we do.

He said;"Do they hear you when you call Or do they benefit you or do they cause harm!"
They said;"(Nay) but we found our fathers doing so."
They knew that their idols could not do anything, but they had seen their fathers doing this, so they made haste to follow in their footsteps.
So Ibrahim said to them;
قَالَ أَفَرَأَيْتُم مَّا كُنتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ
