Ash-Shu'ara [26]: 63 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

فَاَوْحَيْنَآ اِلٰى مُوْسٰٓى اَنِ اضْرِبْ بِّعَصَاكَ الْبَحْرَۗ فَانْفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرْقٍ كَالطَّوْدِ الْعَظِيْمِ ۚ (الشعراء : ٢٦)

fa-awḥaynā
فَأَوْحَيْنَآ
Then We inspired
ilā
إِلَىٰ
to
mūsā
مُوسَىٰٓ
Musa
ani
أَنِ
[that]
iḍ'rib
ٱضْرِب
"Strike
biʿaṣāka
بِّعَصَاكَ
with your staff
l-baḥra
ٱلْبَحْرَۖ
the sea"
fa-infalaqa
فَٱنفَلَقَ
So it parted
fakāna
فَكَانَ
and became
kullu
كُلُّ
each
fir'qin
فِرْقٍ
part
kal-ṭawdi
كَٱلطَّوْدِ
like the mountain
l-ʿaẓīmi
ٱلْعَظِيمِ
[the] great

Transliteration:

Fa awhainaaa ilaa Moosaaa anidrib bi'asaakal bahra fanfalaqa fakaana kullu firqin kattawdil 'azeem (QS. aš-Šuʿarāʾ:63)

English / Sahih Translation:

Then We inspired to Moses, "Strike with your staff the sea," and it parted, and each portion was like a great towering mountain. (QS. Ash-Shu'ara, ayah 63)

So We revealed to Mūsā saying, “Strike the sea with your staff.” So it was severed apart, and each part became like a big mountain.

Then We revealed to Moses, (commanding him): "Strike the sea with your rod." Thereupon the sea split up, and then each became like the mass of a huge mount.

We commanded Moses: "Smite the sea with your staff." And it parted, and every parting was like a lofty mountain.

Then We revealed to Moses (saying), `Strike the sea with your staff. (And as he did) so it parted, and each part (of the two hosts) looked like a huge mound.

English Literal

So We inspired/transmitted to Moses that: "Beat/strike/move with your stick/cane the sea/large body of water ." So it broke in half/split open/cracked, so every/each part/piece was as the huge mountain, the great.

So We sent the divine revelation to Moosa that, “Strike the sea with your staff”; thereupon the sea parted; so each part was like a huge mountain.

Said he, "Not so; verily, my Lord is with me. He will guide me."

Then We bade Moses strike the sea with his staff. And it parted, and each part was like a huge mountain.

We inspired Moses: “Strike the sea with your staff.” Whereupon it parted, and each part was like a huge hill.

Tafsir jalalayn

God, exalted be He, says; Thereupon We revealed to Moses; `Strike the sea with your staff', and he struck it, whereupon it parted, it split into twelve parts, and each part was as a mighty mountain, between each of these parts were paths which they followed, such that not even the saddles or the felts of the riders were touched by water.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

فَأَوْحَيْنَا إِلَى مُوسَى أَنِ اضْرِب بِّعَصَاكَ الْبَحْرَ




Then We revealed to Musa (saying);"Strike the sea with your stick."

فَانفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرْقٍ كَالطَّوْدِ الْعَظِيمِ



And it parted, and each separate part became like huge mountain.

meaning, like mighty mountains.

This was the view of Ibn Mas`ud, Ibn Abbas, Muhammad bin Ka`b, Ad-Dahhak, Qatadah and others.

Ata' Al-Khurasani said,

"It refers to a pass between two mountains."

Ibn Abbas said,

"The sea divided into twelve paths, one for each of the tribes."

As-Suddi added,

"And in it there were windows through which they could see one another, and the water was erected like walls."

Allah sent the wind to the sea bed to make it solid like the land.

Allah says;

فَاضْرِبْ لَهُمْ طَرِيقاً فِى الْبَحْرِ يَبَساً لاَّ تَخَافُ دَرَكاً وَلَا تَخْشَى

and strike a dry path for them in the sea, fearing neither to be overtaken nor being afraid. (20;77)

And here He says;

وَأَزْلَفْنَا ثَمَّ الاْأخَرِينَ
