Al-Qur'an Surah Ash-Shu'ara Verse 29

Ash-Shu'ara [26]: 29 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

قَالَ لَىِٕنِ اتَّخَذْتَ اِلٰهًا غَيْرِيْ لَاَجْعَلَنَّكَ مِنَ الْمَسْجُوْنِيْنَ (الشعراء : ٢٦)

لَئِنِ
"If
ittakhadhta
ٱتَّخَذْتَ
you take
ilāhan
إِلَٰهًا
a god
ghayrī
غَيْرِى
other than me
la-ajʿalannaka
لَأَجْعَلَنَّكَ
I will surely make you
mina
مِنَ
among
l-masjūnīna
ٱلْمَسْجُونِينَ
those imprisoned"

Transliteration:

Qaala la'init takhazta ilaahan ghairee la aj'alannaka minal masjooneen (QS. aš-Šuʿarāʾ:29)

English / Sahih Translation:

[Pharaoh] said, "If you take a god other than me, I will surely place you among those imprisoned." (QS. Ash-Shu'ara, ayah 29)

He (Pharaoh) said, “If you adopt a God other than me, I will certainly put you to prison.”

English Literal

He (Pharaoh) said: "If (E) you took/received a god other than me, I will make you (E) from the imprisoned/prisoners."

Tafsir jalalayn

He, Pharaoh, said, to Moses; `If you choose any god other than me, I will surely make you a prisoner!'. His [Pharaoh's] prison was very harsh, for a person would be shut up [in a dungeon] underground alone, where he could neither see nor hear anyone else.

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

After the Rational Proof, Fir`awn resorts to Force

Allah tells;

قَالَ

He (Fir`awn) said;

When proof had been established against Fir`awn, clearly and rationally, he resorted to using force against Musa, thinking that after this there would no further room for discussion. So he said;

لَيِنِ اتَّخَذْتَ إِلَهًا غَيْرِي لَاَجْعَلَنَّكَ مِنَ الْمَسْجُونِينَ



If you choose a god other than me, I will certainly put you among the prisoners.

To this, Musa responded;

قَالَ أَوَلَوْ جِيْتُكَ بِشَيْءٍ مُّبِينٍ
