Al-Furqan [25]: 28 ~ English Qur'an Word By Word and Multi Tafseer

يٰوَيْلَتٰى لَيْتَنِيْ لَمْ اَتَّخِذْ فُلَانًا خَلِيْلًا (الفرقان : ٢٥)

yāwaylatā
يَٰوَيْلَتَىٰ
O woe to me!
laytanī
لَيْتَنِى
I wish
lam
لَمْ

attakhidh
أَتَّخِذْ
I had taken
fulānan
فُلَانًا
that one
khalīlan
خَلِيلًا
(as) a friend

Transliteration:

Yaa wailataa laitanee lam attakhiz fulaanan khaleelaa (QS. al-Furq̈ān:28)

English / Sahih Translation:

Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken that one as a friend. (QS. Al-Furqan, ayah 28)

Tafsir jalalayn

O woe to me! (y waylat; the [final] alif stands in place of the [first person singular] possessive y', y waylat, meaning `[alas] for my destruction!') Would that I had not taken so and so, in other words, [that] Ubayy, as friend!

Tafseer Ibn Kathir

O! Would that I had taken a path with the Messenger. Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had never taken so-and-so as an intimate friend!

meaning, the one among the propagators of misguidance who diverted him from true guidance and led him to follow the path of misguidance, whether this refers to Umayyah bin Khalaf or his brother Ubayy bin Khalaf, or to someone else
