Surah Al-Furqan - Word by Word

(The Criterion)

bismillaahirrahmaanirrahiim
1

تَبٰرَكَ الَّذِيْ نَزَّلَ الْفُرْقَانَ عَلٰى عَبْدِهٖ لِيَكُوْنَ لِلْعٰلَمِيْنَ نَذِيْرًا ۙ ١

tabāraka
تَبَارَكَ
Blessed is He
alladhī
ٱلَّذِى
Who
nazzala
نَزَّلَ
sent down
l-fur'qāna
ٱلْفُرْقَانَ
the Criterion
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
upon
ʿabdihi
عَبْدِهِۦ
His slave
liyakūna
لِيَكُونَ
that he may be
lil'ʿālamīna
لِلْعَٰلَمِينَ
to the worlds
nadhīran
نَذِيرًا
a warner -
Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion upon His Servant that he may be to the worlds a warner – (QS. [25] Al-Furqan: 1)
Tafsir

ۨالَّذِيْ لَهٗ مُلْكُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِ وَلَمْ يَتَّخِذْ وَلَدًا وَّلَمْ يَكُنْ لَّهٗ شَرِيْكٌ فِى الْمُلْكِ وَخَلَقَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ فَقَدَّرَهٗ تَقْدِيْرًا ٢

alladhī
ٱلَّذِى
The One Who -
lahu
لَهُۥ
to Him (belongs)
mul'ku
مُلْكُ
(the) dominion
l-samāwāti
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
(of) the heavens
wal-arḍi
وَٱلْأَرْضِ
and the earth
walam
وَلَمْ
and not
yattakhidh
يَتَّخِذْ
He has taken
waladan
وَلَدًا
a son
walam
وَلَمْ
and not
yakun
يَكُن
He has
lahu
لَّهُۥ
for Him
sharīkun
شَرِيكٌ
a partner
فِى
in
l-mul'ki
ٱلْمُلْكِ
the dominion
wakhalaqa
وَخَلَقَ
and He (has) created
kulla
كُلَّ
every
shayin
شَىْءٍ
thing
faqaddarahu
فَقَدَّرَهُۥ
and determined it
taqdīran
تَقْدِيرًا
(with) determination
He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and who has not taken a son and has not had a partner in dominion and has created each thing and determined it with [precise] determination. (QS. [25] Al-Furqan: 2)
Tafsir

وَاتَّخَذُوْا مِنْ دُوْنِهٖٓ اٰلِهَةً لَّا يَخْلُقُوْنَ شَيْـًٔا وَّهُمْ يُخْلَقُوْنَ وَلَا يَمْلِكُوْنَ لِاَنْفُسِهِمْ ضَرًّا وَّلَا نَفْعًا وَّلَا يَمْلِكُوْنَ مَوْتًا وَّلَا حَيٰوةً وَّلَا نُشُوْرًا ٣

wa-ittakhadhū
وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟
Yet they have taken
min
مِن
besides Him
dūnihi
دُونِهِۦٓ
besides Him
ālihatan
ءَالِهَةً
gods
لَّا
not
yakhluqūna
يَخْلُقُونَ
they create
shayan
شَيْـًٔا
anything
wahum
وَهُمْ
while they
yukh'laqūna
يُخْلَقُونَ
are created
walā
وَلَا
and not
yamlikūna
يَمْلِكُونَ
they possess
li-anfusihim
لِأَنفُسِهِمْ
for themselves
ḍarran
ضَرًّا
any harm
walā
وَلَا
and not
nafʿan
نَفْعًا
any benefit
walā
وَلَا
and not
yamlikūna
يَمْلِكُونَ
they control
mawtan
مَوْتًا
death
walā
وَلَا
and not
ḥayatan
حَيَوٰةً
life
walā
وَلَا
and not
nushūran
نُشُورًا
resurrection
But they have taken besides Him gods which create nothing, while they are created, and possess not for themselves any harm or benefit and possess not [power to cause] death or life or resurrection. (QS. [25] Al-Furqan: 3)
Tafsir
4

وَقَالَ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْٓا اِنْ هٰذَآ اِلَّآ اِفْكُ ِۨافْتَرٰىهُ وَاَعَانَهٗ عَلَيْهِ قَوْمٌ اٰخَرُوْنَۚ فَقَدْ جَاۤءُوْ ظُلْمًا وَّزُوْرًا ۚ ٤

وَقَالَ
And say
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
kafarū
كَفَرُوٓا۟
disbelieve
in
إِنْ
"Not
hādhā
هَٰذَآ
this
illā
إِلَّآ
(is) but
if'kun
إِفْكٌ
a lie
if'tarāhu
ٱفْتَرَىٰهُ
he invented it
wa-aʿānahu
وَأَعَانَهُۥ
and helped him
ʿalayhi
عَلَيْهِ
at it
qawmun
قَوْمٌ
people
ākharūna
ءَاخَرُونَۖ
other"
faqad
فَقَدْ
But verily
jāū
جَآءُو
they (have) produced
ẓul'man
ظُلْمًا
an injustice
wazūran
وَزُورًا
and a lie
And those who disbelieve say, "This [Quran] is not except a falsehood he invented, and another people assisted him in it." But they have committed an injustice and a lie. (QS. [25] Al-Furqan: 4)
Tafsir
5

وَقَالُوْٓا اَسَاطِيْرُ الْاَوَّلِيْنَ اكْتَتَبَهَا فَهِيَ تُمْلٰى عَلَيْهِ بُكْرَةً وَّاَصِيْلًا ٥

waqālū
وَقَالُوٓا۟
And they say
asāṭīru
أَسَٰطِيرُ
"Tales
l-awalīna
ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
(of) the former people
ik'tatabahā
ٱكْتَتَبَهَا
which he has had written
fahiya
فَهِىَ
and they
tum'lā
تُمْلَىٰ
are dictated
ʿalayhi
عَلَيْهِ
to him
buk'ratan
بُكْرَةً
morning
wa-aṣīlan
وَأَصِيلًا
and evening"
And they say, "Legends of the former peoples which he has written down, and they are dictated to him morning and afternoon." (QS. [25] Al-Furqan: 5)
Tafsir
6

قُلْ اَنْزَلَهُ الَّذِيْ يَعْلَمُ السِّرَّ فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِۗ اِنَّهٗ كَانَ غَفُوْرًا رَّحِيْمًا ٦

qul
قُلْ
Say
anzalahu
أَنزَلَهُ
"Has sent it down
alladhī
ٱلَّذِى
the One Who
yaʿlamu
يَعْلَمُ
knows
l-sira
ٱلسِّرَّ
the secret
فِى
in
l-samāwāti
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
the heavens
wal-arḍi
وَٱلْأَرْضِۚ
and the earth
innahu
إِنَّهُۥ
Indeed He
kāna
كَانَ
is
ghafūran
غَفُورًا
Oft-Forgiving
raḥīman
رَّحِيمًا
Most Merciful"
Say, [O Muhammad], "It has been revealed by He who knows [every] secret within the heavens and the earth. Indeed, He is ever Forgiving and Merciful." (QS. [25] Al-Furqan: 6)
Tafsir
7

وَقَالُوْا مَالِ هٰذَا الرَّسُوْلِ يَأْكُلُ الطَّعَامَ وَيَمْشِيْ فِى الْاَسْوَاقِۗ لَوْلَآ اُنْزِلَ اِلَيْهِ مَلَكٌ فَيَكُوْنَ مَعَهٗ نَذِيْرًا ۙ ٧

وَقَالُوا۟
And they say
māli
مَالِ
"Why does
hādhā
هَٰذَا
this
l-rasūli
ٱلرَّسُولِ
Messenger
yakulu
يَأْكُلُ
eat
l-ṭaʿāma
ٱلطَّعَامَ
[the] food
wayamshī
وَيَمْشِى
and walk
فِى
in
l-aswāqi
ٱلْأَسْوَاقِۙ
the markets?
lawlā
لَوْلَآ
Why not
unzila
أُنزِلَ
is sent down
ilayhi
إِلَيْهِ
to him
malakun
مَلَكٌ
an Angel
fayakūna
فَيَكُونَ
then he be
maʿahu
مَعَهُۥ
with him
nadhīran
نَذِيرًا
a warner?
And they say, "What is this messenger that eats food and walks in the markets? Why was there not sent down to him an angel so he would be with him a warner? (QS. [25] Al-Furqan: 7)
Tafsir

اَوْ يُلْقٰىٓ اِلَيْهِ كَنْزٌ اَوْ تَكُوْنُ لَهٗ جَنَّةٌ يَّأْكُلُ مِنْهَاۗ وَقَالَ الظّٰلِمُوْنَ اِنْ تَتَّبِعُوْنَ اِلَّا رَجُلًا مَّسْحُوْرًا ٨

أَوْ
Or
yul'qā
يُلْقَىٰٓ
is delivered
ilayhi
إِلَيْهِ
to him
kanzun
كَنزٌ
a treasure
aw
أَوْ
or
takūnu
تَكُونُ
is
lahu
لَهُۥ
for him
jannatun
جَنَّةٌ
a garden
yakulu
يَأْكُلُ
he may eat
min'hā
مِنْهَاۚ
from it
waqāla
وَقَالَ
And say
l-ẓālimūna
ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ
the wrongdoers
in
إِن
"Not
tattabiʿūna
تَتَّبِعُونَ
you follow
illā
إِلَّا
but
rajulan
رَجُلًا
a man
masḥūran
مَّسْحُورًا
bewitched"
Or [why is not] a treasure presented to him [from heaven], or does he [not] have a garden from which he eats?" And the wrongdoers say, "You follow not but a man affected by magic." (QS. [25] Al-Furqan: 8)
Tafsir

اُنْظُرْ كَيْفَ ضَرَبُوْا لَكَ الْاَمْثَالَ فَضَلُّوْا فَلَا يَسْتَطِيْعُوْنَ سَبِيْلًا ࣖ ٩

unẓur
ٱنظُرْ
See
kayfa
كَيْفَ
how
ḍarabū
ضَرَبُوا۟
they set forth
laka
لَكَ
for you
l-amthāla
ٱلْأَمْثَٰلَ
the similitudes
faḍallū
فَضَلُّوا۟
but they have gone astray
falā
فَلَا
so not
yastaṭīʿūna
يَسْتَطِيعُونَ
they are able (to find)
sabīlan
سَبِيلًا
a way
Look how they strike for you comparisons; but they have strayed, so they cannot [find] a way. (QS. [25] Al-Furqan: 9)
Tafsir

تَبٰرَكَ الَّذِيْٓ اِنْ شَاۤءَ جَعَلَ لَكَ خَيْرًا مِّنْ ذٰلِكَ جَنّٰتٍ تَجْرِيْ مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الْاَنْهٰرُۙ وَيَجْعَلْ لَّكَ قُصُوْرًا ١٠

Blessed is He
alladhī
ٱلَّذِىٓ
Who
in
إِن
if
shāa
شَآءَ
He willed
jaʿala
جَعَلَ
(could have) made
laka
لَكَ
for you
khayran
خَيْرًا
better
min
مِّن
than
dhālika
ذَٰلِكَ
that -
jannātin
جَنَّٰتٍ
gardens -
tajrī
تَجْرِى
flow
min
مِن
from
taḥtihā
تَحْتِهَا
underneath it
l-anhāru
ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ
the rivers
wayajʿal
وَيَجْعَل
and He (could) make
laka
لَّكَ
for you
quṣūran
قُصُورًۢا
palaces
Blessed is He who, if He willed, could have made for you [something] better than that – gardens beneath which rivers flow – and could make for you palaces. (QS. [25] Al-Furqan: 10)
