(The Light)

31

وَقُلْ لِّلْمُؤْمِنٰتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ اَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوْجَهُنَّ وَلَا يُبْدِيْنَ زِيْنَتَهُنَّ اِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلٰى جُيُوْبِهِنَّۖ وَلَا يُبْدِيْنَ زِيْنَتَهُنَّ اِلَّا لِبُعُوْلَتِهِنَّ اَوْ اٰبَاۤىِٕهِنَّ اَوْ اٰبَاۤءِ بُعُوْلَتِهِنَّ اَوْ اَبْنَاۤىِٕهِنَّ اَوْ اَبْنَاۤءِ بُعُوْلَتِهِنَّ اَوْ اِخْوَانِهِنَّ اَوْ بَنِيْٓ اِخْوَانِهِنَّ اَوْ بَنِيْٓ اَخَوٰتِهِنَّ اَوْ نِسَاۤىِٕهِنَّ اَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ اَيْمَانُهُنَّ اَوِ التَّابِعِيْنَ غَيْرِ اُولِى الْاِرْبَةِ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ اَوِ الطِّفْلِ الَّذِيْنَ لَمْ يَظْهَرُوْا عَلٰى عَوْرٰتِ النِّسَاۤءِ ۖوَلَا يَضْرِبْنَ بِاَرْجُلِهِنَّ لِيُعْلَمَ مَا يُخْفِيْنَ مِنْ زِيْنَتِهِنَّۗ وَتُوْبُوْٓا اِلَى اللّٰهِ جَمِيْعًا اَيُّهَ الْمُؤْمِنُوْنَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُوْنَ ٣١

waqul
وَقُل
And say
lil'mu'mināti
لِّلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ
to the believing women
yaghḍuḍ'na
يَغْضُضْنَ
(that) they should lower
min
مِنْ
[of]
abṣārihinna
أَبْصَٰرِهِنَّ
their gaze
wayaḥfaẓna
وَيَحْفَظْنَ
and they should guard
furūjahunna
فُرُوجَهُنَّ
their chastity
walā
وَلَا
and not
yub'dīna
يُبْدِينَ
(to) display
zīnatahunna
زِينَتَهُنَّ
their adornment
illā
إِلَّا
except
مَا
what
ẓahara
ظَهَرَ
is apparent
min'hā
مِنْهَاۖ
of it
walyaḍrib'na
وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ
And let them draw
bikhumurihinna
بِخُمُرِهِنَّ
their head covers
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
over
juyūbihinna
جُيُوبِهِنَّۖ
their bosoms
walā
وَلَا
and not
yub'dīna
يُبْدِينَ
(to) display
zīnatahunna
زِينَتَهُنَّ
their adornment
illā
إِلَّا
except
libuʿūlatihinna
لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ
to their husbands
aw
أَوْ
or
ābāihinna
ءَابَآئِهِنَّ
their fathers
aw
أَوْ
or
ābāi
ءَابَآءِ
fathers
buʿūlatihinna
بُعُولَتِهِنَّ
(of) their husbands
aw
أَوْ
or
abnāihinna
أَبْنَآئِهِنَّ
their sons
aw
أَوْ
or
abnāi
أَبْنَآءِ
sons
buʿūlatihinna
بُعُولَتِهِنَّ
(of) their husbands
aw
أَوْ
or
ikh'wānihinna
إِخْوَٰنِهِنَّ
their brothers
aw
أَوْ
or
banī
بَنِىٓ
sons
ikh'wānihinna
إِخْوَٰنِهِنَّ
(of) their brothers
aw
أَوْ
or
banī
بَنِىٓ
sons
akhawātihinna
أَخَوَٰتِهِنَّ
(of) their sisters
aw
أَوْ
or
nisāihinna
نِسَآئِهِنَّ
their women
aw
أَوْ
or
مَا
what
malakat
مَلَكَتْ
possess
aymānuhunna
أَيْمَٰنُهُنَّ
their right hands
awi
أَوِ
or
l-tābiʿīna
ٱلتَّٰبِعِينَ
the attendants
ghayri
غَيْرِ
having no physical desire
ulī
أُو۟لِى
having no physical desire
l-ir'bati
ٱلْإِرْبَةِ
having no physical desire
mina
مِنَ
among
l-rijāli
ٱلرِّجَالِ
[the] men
awi
أَوِ
or
l-ṭif'li
ٱلطِّفْلِ
[the] children
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
who
lam
لَمْ
(are) not
yaẓharū
يَظْهَرُوا۟
aware
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
of
ʿawrāti
عَوْرَٰتِ
private aspects
l-nisāi
ٱلنِّسَآءِۖ
(of) the women
walā
وَلَا
And not
yaḍrib'na
يَضْرِبْنَ
let them stamp
bi-arjulihinna
بِأَرْجُلِهِنَّ
their feet
liyuʿ'lama
لِيُعْلَمَ
to make known
مَا
what
yukh'fīna
يُخْفِينَ
they conceal
min
مِن
of
zīnatihinna
زِينَتِهِنَّۚ
their adornment
watūbū
وَتُوبُوٓا۟
And turn
ilā
إِلَى
to
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
Allah
jamīʿan
جَمِيعًا
altogether
ayyuha
أَيُّهَ
O believers!
l-mu'minūna
ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ
O believers!
laʿallakum
لَعَلَّكُمْ
So that you may
tuf'liḥūna
تُفْلِحُونَ
succeed
And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment [i.e., beauty] except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess [i.e., slaves], or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 31)
Tafsir
32

وَاَنْكِحُوا الْاَيَامٰى مِنْكُمْ وَالصّٰلِحِيْنَ مِنْ عِبَادِكُمْ وَاِمَاۤىِٕكُمْۗ اِنْ يَّكُوْنُوْا فُقَرَاۤءَ يُغْنِهِمُ اللّٰهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهٖۗ وَاللّٰهُ وَاسِعٌ عَلِيْمٌ ٣٢

wa-ankiḥū
وَأَنكِحُوا۟
And marry
l-ayāmā
ٱلْأَيَٰمَىٰ
the single
minkum
مِنكُمْ
among you
wal-ṣāliḥīna
وَٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ
and the righteous
min
مِنْ
among
ʿibādikum
عِبَادِكُمْ
your male slaves
wa-imāikum
وَإِمَآئِكُمْۚ
and your female slaves
in
إِن
If
yakūnū
يَكُونُوا۟
they are
fuqarāa
فُقَرَآءَ
poor
yugh'nihimu
يُغْنِهِمُ
Allah will enrich them
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah will enrich them
min
مِن
from
faḍlihi
فَضْلِهِۦۗ
His Bounty
wal-lahu
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
wāsiʿun
وَٰسِعٌ
(is) All-Encompassing
ʿalīmun
عَلِيمٌ
All-Knowing
And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty, and Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 32)
Tafsir
33

وَلْيَسْتَعْفِفِ الَّذِيْنَ لَا يَجِدُوْنَ نِكَاحًا حَتّٰى يُغْنِيَهُمُ اللّٰهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهٖ ۗوَالَّذِيْنَ يَبْتَغُوْنَ الْكِتٰبَ مِمَّا مَلَكَتْ اَيْمَانُكُمْ فَكَاتِبُوْهُمْ اِنْ عَلِمْتُمْ فِيْهِمْ خَيْرًا وَّاٰتُوْهُمْ مِّنْ مَّالِ اللّٰهِ الَّذِيْٓ اٰتٰىكُمْ ۗوَلَا تُكْرِهُوْا فَتَيٰتِكُمْ عَلَى الْبِغَاۤءِ اِنْ اَرَدْنَ تَحَصُّنًا لِّتَبْتَغُوْا عَرَضَ الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَا ۗوَمَنْ يُّكْرِهْهُّنَّ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ مِنْۢ بَعْدِ اِكْرَاهِهِنَّ غَفُوْرٌ رَّحِيْمٌ ٣٣

walyastaʿfifi
وَلْيَسْتَعْفِفِ
And let be chaste
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
لَا
(do) not
yajidūna
يَجِدُونَ
find
nikāḥan
نِكَاحًا
(means for) marriage
ḥattā
حَتَّىٰ
until
yugh'niyahumu
يُغْنِيَهُمُ
Allah enriches them
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah enriches them
min
مِن
from
faḍlihi
فَضْلِهِۦۗ
His Bounty
wa-alladhīna
وَٱلَّذِينَ
And those who
yabtaghūna
يَبْتَغُونَ
seek
l-kitāba
ٱلْكِتَٰبَ
the writing
mimmā
مِمَّا
from (those) whom
malakat
مَلَكَتْ
possess
aymānukum
أَيْمَٰنُكُمْ
your right hands
fakātibūhum
فَكَاتِبُوهُمْ
then give them (the) writing
in
إِنْ
if
ʿalim'tum
عَلِمْتُمْ
you know
fīhim
فِيهِمْ
in them
khayran
خَيْرًاۖ
any good
waātūhum
وَءَاتُوهُم
and give them
min
مِّن
from
māli
مَّالِ
the wealth of Allah
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
the wealth of Allah
alladhī
ٱلَّذِىٓ
which
ātākum
ءَاتَىٰكُمْۚ
He has given you
walā
وَلَا
And (do) not
tuk'rihū
تُكْرِهُوا۟
compel
fatayātikum
فَتَيَٰتِكُمْ
your slave girls
ʿalā
عَلَى
to
l-bighāi
ٱلْبِغَآءِ
[the] prostitution
in
إِنْ
if
aradna
أَرَدْنَ
they desire
taḥaṣṣunan
تَحَصُّنًا
chastity
litabtaghū
لِّتَبْتَغُوا۟
that you may seek
ʿaraḍa
عَرَضَ
temporary gain
l-ḥayati
ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ
(of) the life
l-dun'yā
ٱلدُّنْيَاۚ
(of) the world
waman
وَمَن
And whoever
yuk'rihhunna
يُكْرِههُّنَّ
compels them
fa-inna
فَإِنَّ
then indeed
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
min
مِنۢ
after
baʿdi
بَعْدِ
after
ik'rāhihinna
إِكْرَٰهِهِنَّ
their compulsion
ghafūrun
غَفُورٌ
(is) Oft-Forgiving
raḥīmun
رَّحِيمٌ
Most Merciful
But let them who find not [the means for] marriage abstain [from sexual relations] until Allah enriches them from His bounty. And those who seek a contract [for eventual emancipation] from among whom your right hands possess – then make a contract with them if you know there is within them goodness and give them from the wealth of Allah which He has given you. And do not compel your slave girls to prostitution, if they desire chastity, to seek [thereby] the temporary interests of worldly life. And if someone should compel them, then indeed, Allah is [to them], after their compulsion, Forgiving and Merciful. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 33)
Tafsir
34

وَلَقَدْ اَنْزَلْنَآ اِلَيْكُمْ اٰيٰتٍ مُّبَيِّنٰتٍ وَّمَثَلًا مِّنَ الَّذِيْنَ خَلَوْا مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ وَمَوْعِظَةً لِّلْمُتَّقِيْنَ ࣖ ٣٤

walaqad
وَلَقَدْ
And verily
anzalnā
أَنزَلْنَآ
We have sent down
ilaykum
إِلَيْكُمْ
to you
āyātin
ءَايَٰتٍ
Verses
mubayyinātin
مُّبَيِّنَٰتٍ
clear
wamathalan
وَمَثَلًا
and an example
mina
مِّنَ
of
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
khalaw
خَلَوْا۟
passed away
min
مِن
before you
qablikum
قَبْلِكُمْ
before you
wamawʿiẓatan
وَمَوْعِظَةً
and an admonition
lil'muttaqīna
لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ
for those who fear (Allah)
And We have certainly sent down to you distinct verses and examples from those who passed on before you and an admonition for those who fear Allah. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 34)
Tafsir
35

۞ اَللّٰهُ نُوْرُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِۗ مَثَلُ نُوْرِهٖ كَمِشْكٰوةٍ فِيْهَا مِصْبَاحٌۗ اَلْمِصْبَاحُ فِيْ زُجَاجَةٍۗ اَلزُّجَاجَةُ كَاَنَّهَا كَوْكَبٌ دُرِّيٌّ يُّوْقَدُ مِنْ شَجَرَةٍ مُّبٰرَكَةٍ زَيْتُوْنَةٍ لَّا شَرْقِيَّةٍ وَّلَا غَرْبِيَّةٍۙ يَّكَادُ زَيْتُهَا يُضِيْۤءُ وَلَوْ لَمْ تَمْسَسْهُ نَارٌۗ نُوْرٌ عَلٰى نُوْرٍۗ يَهْدِى اللّٰهُ لِنُوْرِهٖ مَنْ يَّشَاۤءُۗ وَيَضْرِبُ اللّٰهُ الْاَمْثَالَ لِلنَّاسِۗ وَاللّٰهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيْمٌ ۙ ٣٥

al-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
nūru
نُورُ
(is the) Light
l-samāwāti
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
(of) the heavens
wal-arḍi
وَٱلْأَرْضِۚ
and the earth
mathalu
مَثَلُ
(The) example
nūrihi
نُورِهِۦ
(of) His Light
kamish'katin
كَمِشْكَوٰةٍ
(is) like a niche
fīhā
فِيهَا
in it
miṣ'bāḥun
مِصْبَاحٌۖ
(is) a lamp
l-miṣ'bāḥu
ٱلْمِصْبَاحُ
the lamp
فِى
(is) in
zujājatin
زُجَاجَةٍۖ
a glass
l-zujājatu
ٱلزُّجَاجَةُ
the glass
ka-annahā
كَأَنَّهَا
as if it were
kawkabun
كَوْكَبٌ
a star
durriyyun
دُرِّىٌّ
brilliant
yūqadu
يُوقَدُ
(which) is lit
min
مِن
from
shajaratin
شَجَرَةٍ
a tree
mubārakatin
مُّبَٰرَكَةٍ
blessed
zaytūnatin
زَيْتُونَةٍ
an olive
لَّا
not
sharqiyyatin
شَرْقِيَّةٍ
(of the) east
walā
وَلَا
and not
gharbiyyatin
غَرْبِيَّةٍ
(of the) west
yakādu
يَكَادُ
would almost
zaytuhā
زَيْتُهَا
its oil
yuḍīu
يُضِىٓءُ
glow
walaw
وَلَوْ
even if
lam
لَمْ
not
tamsashu
تَمْسَسْهُ
touched it
nārun
نَارٌۚ
fire
nūrun
نُّورٌ
Light
ʿalā
عَلَىٰ
upon
nūrin
نُورٍۗ
Light
yahdī
يَهْدِى
Allah guides
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah guides
linūrihi
لِنُورِهِۦ
to His Light
man
مَن
whom
yashāu
يَشَآءُۚ
He wills
wayaḍribu
وَيَضْرِبُ
And Allah sets forth
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
And Allah sets forth
l-amthāla
ٱلْأَمْثَٰلَ
the examples
lilnnāsi
لِلنَّاسِۗ
for the mankind
wal-lahu
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
bikulli
بِكُلِّ
of every
shayin
شَىْءٍ
thing
ʿalīmun
عَلِيمٌ
(is) All-Knower
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp; the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 35)
Tafsir
36

فِيْ بُيُوْتٍ اَذِنَ اللّٰهُ اَنْ تُرْفَعَ وَيُذْكَرَ فِيْهَا اسْمُهٗۙ يُسَبِّحُ لَهٗ فِيْهَا بِالْغُدُوِّ وَالْاٰصَالِ ۙ ٣٦

فِى
In
buyūtin
بُيُوتٍ
houses
adhina
أَذِنَ
(which) Allah ordered
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
(which) Allah ordered
an
أَن
that
tur'faʿa
تُرْفَعَ
they be raised
wayudh'kara
وَيُذْكَرَ
and be mentioned
fīhā
فِيهَا
in them
us'muhu
ٱسْمُهُۥ
His name
yusabbiḥu
يُسَبِّحُ
Glorify
lahu
لَهُۥ
[to] Him
fīhā
فِيهَا
in them
bil-ghuduwi
بِٱلْغُدُوِّ
in the mornings
wal-āṣāli
وَٱلْءَاصَالِ
and (in) the evenings
[Such niches are] in houses [i.e., mosques] which Allah has ordered to be raised and that His name be mentioned [i.e., praised] therein; exalting Him within them in the morning and the evenings (QS. [24] An-Nur: 36)
Tafsir
37

رِجَالٌ لَّا تُلْهِيْهِمْ تِجَارَةٌ وَّلَا بَيْعٌ عَنْ ذِكْرِ اللّٰهِ وَاِقَامِ الصَّلٰوةِ وَاِيْتَاۤءِ الزَّكٰوةِ ۙيَخَافُوْنَ يَوْمًا تَتَقَلَّبُ فِيْهِ الْقُلُوْبُ وَالْاَبْصَارُ ۙ ٣٧

rijālun
رِجَالٌ
Men
لَّا
not
tul'hīhim
تُلْهِيهِمْ
distracts them
tijāratun
تِجَٰرَةٌ
trade
walā
وَلَا
and not
bayʿun
بَيْعٌ
sale
ʿan
عَن
from
dhik'ri
ذِكْرِ
(the) remembrance of Allah
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
(the) remembrance of Allah
wa-iqāmi
وَإِقَامِ
and (from) establishing
l-ṣalati
ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ
the prayer
waītāi
وَإِيتَآءِ
and giving
l-zakati
ٱلزَّكَوٰةِۙ
zakah
yakhāfūna
يَخَافُونَ
They fear
yawman
يَوْمًا
a Day
tataqallabu
تَتَقَلَّبُ
will turn about
fīhi
فِيهِ
therein
l-qulūbu
ٱلْقُلُوبُ
the hearts
wal-abṣāru
وَٱلْأَبْصَٰرُ
and the eyes
[Are] men whom neither commerce nor sale distracts from the remembrance of Allah and performance of prayer and giving of Zakah. They fear a Day in which the hearts and eyes will [fearfully] turn about. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 37)
Tafsir
38

لِيَجْزِيَهُمُ اللّٰهُ اَحْسَنَ مَا عَمِلُوْا وَيَزِيْدَهُمْ مِّنْ فَضْلِهٖۗ وَاللّٰهُ يَرْزُقُ مَنْ يَّشَاۤءُ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ ٣٨

liyajziyahumu
لِيَجْزِيَهُمُ
That Allah may reward them
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
That Allah may reward them
aḥsana
أَحْسَنَ
(with the) best
مَا
(of) what
ʿamilū
عَمِلُوا۟
they did
wayazīdahum
وَيَزِيدَهُم
and increase them
min
مِّن
from
faḍlihi
فَضْلِهِۦۗ
His Bounty
wal-lahu
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
yarzuqu
يَرْزُقُ
provides
man
مَن
whom
yashāu
يَشَآءُ
He wills
bighayri
بِغَيْرِ
without
ḥisābin
حِسَابٍ
measure
That Allah may reward them [according to] the best of what they did and increase them from His bounty. And Allah gives provision to whom He wills without account [i.e., limit]. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 38)
Tafsir
39

وَالَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْٓا اَعْمَالُهُمْ كَسَرَابٍۢ بِقِيْعَةٍ يَّحْسَبُهُ الظَّمْاٰنُ مَاۤءًۗ حَتّٰٓى اِذَا جَاۤءَهٗ لَمْ يَجِدْهُ شَيْـًٔا وَّوَجَدَ اللّٰهَ عِنْدَهٗ فَوَفّٰىهُ حِسَابَهٗ ۗ وَاللّٰهُ سَرِيْعُ الْحِسَابِ ۙ ٣٩

wa-alladhīna
وَٱلَّذِينَ
But those who
kafarū
كَفَرُوٓا۟
disbelieve
aʿmāluhum
أَعْمَٰلُهُمْ
their deeds
kasarābin
كَسَرَابٍۭ
(are) like a mirage
biqīʿatin
بِقِيعَةٍ
in a lowland
yaḥsabuhu
يَحْسَبُهُ
thinks it
l-ẓamānu
ٱلظَّمْـَٔانُ
the thirsty one
māan
مَآءً
(to be) water
ḥattā
حَتَّىٰٓ
until
idhā
إِذَا
when
jāahu
جَآءَهُۥ
he comes to it
lam
لَمْ
not
yajid'hu
يَجِدْهُ
he finds it
shayan
شَيْـًٔا
(to be) anything
wawajada
وَوَجَدَ
but he finds
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
ʿindahu
عِندَهُۥ
before him
fawaffāhu
فَوَفَّىٰهُ
He will pay him in full
ḥisābahu
حِسَابَهُۥۗ
his due
wal-lahu
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
sarīʿu
سَرِيعُ
(is) swift
l-ḥisābi
ٱلْحِسَابِ
(in) the account
But those who disbelieved – their deeds are like a mirage in a lowland which a thirsty one thinks is water until, when he comes to it, he finds it is nothing but finds Allah before him, and He will pay him in full his due; and Allah is swift in account. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 39)
Tafsir
40

اَوْ كَظُلُمٰتٍ فِيْ بَحْرٍ لُّجِّيٍّ يَّغْشٰىهُ مَوْجٌ مِّنْ فَوْقِهٖ مَوْجٌ مِّنْ فَوْقِهٖ سَحَابٌۗ ظُلُمٰتٌۢ بَعْضُهَا فَوْقَ بَعْضٍۗ اِذَآ اَخْرَجَ يَدَهٗ لَمْ يَكَدْ يَرٰىهَاۗ وَمَنْ لَّمْ يَجْعَلِ اللّٰهُ لَهٗ نُوْرًا فَمَا لَهٗ مِنْ نُّوْرٍ ࣖ ٤٠

Or
kaẓulumātin
كَظُلُمَٰتٍ
(is) like (the) darkness[es]
فِى
in
baḥrin
بَحْرٍ
a sea
lujjiyyin
لُّجِّىٍّ
deep
yaghshāhu
يَغْشَىٰهُ
covers it
mawjun
مَوْجٌ
a wave
min

Or [they are] like darknesses within an unfathomable sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds – darknesses, some of them upon others. When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it. And he to whom Allah has not granted light – for him there is no light. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 40)
