(The Light)

11

اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ جَاۤءُوْ بِالْاِفْكِ عُصْبَةٌ مِّنْكُمْۗ لَا تَحْسَبُوْهُ شَرًّا لَّكُمْۗ بَلْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْۗ لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ مَّا اكْتَسَبَ مِنَ الْاِثْمِۚ وَالَّذِيْ تَوَلّٰى كِبْرَهٗ مِنْهُمْ لَهٗ عَذَابٌ عَظِيْمٌ ١١

inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
jāū
جَآءُو
brought
bil-if'ki
بِٱلْإِفْكِ
the lie
ʿuṣ'batun
عُصْبَةٌ
(are) a group
minkum
مِّنكُمْۚ
among you
لَا
(Do) not
taḥsabūhu
تَحْسَبُوهُ
think it
sharran
شَرًّا
bad
lakum
لَّكُمۖ
for you
bal
بَلْ
nay
huwa
هُوَ
it
khayrun
خَيْرٌ
(is) good
lakum
لَّكُمْۚ
for you
likulli
لِكُلِّ
For every
im'ri-in
ٱمْرِئٍ
person
min'hum
مِّنْهُم
among them
مَّا
(is) what
ik'tasaba
ٱكْتَسَبَ
he earned
mina
مِنَ
of
l-ith'mi
ٱلْإِثْمِۚ
the sin
wa-alladhī
وَٱلَّذِى
and the one who
tawallā
تَوَلَّىٰ
took upon himself a greater share of it
kib'rahu
كِبْرَهُۥ
took upon himself a greater share of it
min'hum
مِنْهُمْ
among them
lahu
لَهُۥ
for him
ʿadhābun
عَذَابٌ
(is) a punishment
ʿaẓīmun
عَظِيمٌ
great
Indeed, those who came with falsehood are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather, it is good for you. For every person among them is what [punishment] he has earned from the sin, and he who took upon himself the greater portion thereof – for him is a great punishment [i.e., Hellfire]. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 11)
Tafsir
12

لَوْلَآ اِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوْهُ ظَنَّ الْمُؤْمِنُوْنَ وَالْمُؤْمِنٰتُ بِاَنْفُسِهِمْ خَيْرًاۙ وَّقَالُوْا هٰذَآ اِفْكٌ مُّبِيْنٌ ١٢

lawlā
لَّوْلَآ
Why not
idh
إِذْ
when
samiʿ'tumūhu
سَمِعْتُمُوهُ
you heard it
ẓanna
ظَنَّ
think
l-mu'minūna
ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ
the believing men
wal-mu'minātu
وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتُ
and the believing women
bi-anfusihim
بِأَنفُسِهِمْ
good of themselves
khayran
خَيْرًا
good of themselves
waqālū
وَقَالُوا۟
and say
hādhā
هَٰذَآ
"This
if'kun
إِفْكٌ
(is) a lie
mubīnun
مُّبِينٌ
clear?"
Why, when you heard it, did not the believing men and believing women think good of themselves [i.e., one another] and say, "This is an obvious falsehood"? (QS. [24] An-Nur: 12)
Tafsir
13

لَوْلَا جَاۤءُوْ عَلَيْهِ بِاَرْبَعَةِ شُهَدَاۤءَۚ فَاِذْ لَمْ يَأْتُوْا بِالشُّهَدَاۤءِ فَاُولٰۤىِٕكَ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ هُمُ الْكٰذِبُوْنَ ١٣

lawlā
لَّوْلَا
Why (did) not
jāū
جَآءُو
they bring
ʿalayhi
عَلَيْهِ
for it
bi-arbaʿati
بِأَرْبَعَةِ
four
shuhadāa
شُهَدَآءَۚ
witnesses?
fa-idh
فَإِذْ
Then when
lam
لَمْ
not
yatū
يَأْتُوا۟
they brought
bil-shuhadāi
بِٱلشُّهَدَآءِ
the witnesses
fa-ulāika
فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ
then those
ʿinda
عِندَ
near Allah
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
near Allah
humu
هُمُ
they
l-kādhibūna
ٱلْكَٰذِبُونَ
(are) the liars
Why did they [who slandered] not produce for it four witnesses? And when they do not produce the witnesses, then it is they, in the sight of Allah, who are the liars. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 13)
Tafsir
14

وَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ اللّٰهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهٗ فِى الدُّنْيَا وَالْاٰخِرَةِ لَمَسَّكُمْ فِيْ مَآ اَفَضْتُمْ فِيْهِ عَذَابٌ عَظِيْمٌ ١٤

walawlā
وَلَوْلَا
And if not
faḍlu
فَضْلُ
(for the) Grace
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
(of) Allah
ʿalaykum
عَلَيْكُمْ
upon you
waraḥmatuhu
وَرَحْمَتُهُۥ
and His Mercy
فِى
in
l-dun'yā
ٱلدُّنْيَا
the world
wal-ākhirati
وَٱلْءَاخِرَةِ
and the Hereafter
lamassakum
لَمَسَّكُمْ
surely would have touched you
فِى
in
مَآ
what
afaḍtum
أَفَضْتُمْ
you had rushed glibly
fīhi
فِيهِ
concerning it
ʿadhābun
عَذَابٌ
a punishment
ʿaẓīmun
عَظِيمٌ
great
And if it had not been for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy in this world and the Hereafter, you would have been touched for that [lie] in which you were involved by a great punishment (QS. [24] An-Nur: 14)

15

اِذْ تَلَقَّوْنَهٗ بِاَلْسِنَتِكُمْ وَتَقُوْلُوْنَ بِاَفْوَاهِكُمْ مَّا لَيْسَ لَكُمْ بِهٖ عِلْمٌ وَّتَحْسَبُوْنَهٗ هَيِّنًاۙ وَّهُوَ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ عَظِيْمٌ ۚ ١٥

إِذْ
When
talaqqawnahu
تَلَقَّوْنَهُۥ
you received it
bi-alsinatikum
بِأَلْسِنَتِكُمْ
with your tongues
wataqūlūna
وَتَقُولُونَ
and you said
bi-afwāhikum
بِأَفْوَاهِكُم
with your mouths
مَّا
what
laysa
لَيْسَ
not
lakum
لَكُم
for you
bihi
بِهِۦ
of it
ʿil'mun
عِلْمٌ
any knowledge
wataḥsabūnahu
وَتَحْسَبُونَهُۥ
and you thought it
hayyinan
هَيِّنًا
(was) insignificant
wahuwa
وَهُوَ
while it
ʿinda
عِندَ
(was) near Allah
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
(was) near Allah
ʿaẓīmun
عَظِيمٌ
great
When you received it with your tongues and said with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge and thought it was insignificant while it was, in the sight of Allah, tremendous. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 15)
Tafsir
16

وَلَوْلَآ اِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوْهُ قُلْتُمْ مَّا يَكُوْنُ لَنَآ اَنْ نَّتَكَلَّمَ بِهٰذَاۖ سُبْحٰنَكَ هٰذَا بُهْتَانٌ عَظِيْمٌ ١٦

walawlā
وَلَوْلَآ
And why not
idh
إِذْ
when
samiʿ'tumūhu
سَمِعْتُمُوهُ
you heard it
qul'tum
قُلْتُم
you said
مَّا
"Not
yakūnu
يَكُونُ
it is
lanā
لَنَآ
for us
an
أَن
that
natakallama
نَّتَكَلَّمَ
we speak
bihādhā
بِهَٰذَا
of this
sub'ḥānaka
سُبْحَٰنَكَ
Glory be to You!
hādhā
هَٰذَا
This
buh'tānun
بُهْتَٰنٌ
(is) a slander
ʿaẓīmun
عَظِيمٌ
great?"
And why, when you heard it, did you not say, "It is not for us to speak of this. Exalted are You, [O Allah]; this is a great slander"? (QS. [24] An-Nur: 16)
Tafsir
17

يَعِظُكُمُ اللّٰهُ اَنْ تَعُوْدُوْا لِمِثْلِهٖٓ اَبَدًا اِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُّؤْمِنِيْنَ ۚ ١٧

yaʿiẓukumu
يَعِظُكُمُ
Allah warns you
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
Allah warns you
an
أَن
that
taʿūdū
تَعُودُوا۟
you return
limith'lihi
لِمِثْلِهِۦٓ
(to the) like of it
abadan
أَبَدًا
ever
in
إِن
if
kuntum
كُنتُم
you are
mu'minīna
مُّؤْمِنِينَ
believers
Allah warns you against returning to the likes of this [conduct], ever, if you should be believers. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 17)
Tafsir
18

وَيُبَيِّنُ اللّٰهُ لَكُمُ الْاٰيٰتِۗ وَاللّٰهُ عَلِيْمٌ حَكِيْمٌ ١٨

wayubayyinu
وَيُبَيِّنُ
And Allah makes clear
l-lahu
ٱللَّهُ
And Allah makes clear
lakumu
لَكُمُ
to you
l-āyāti
ٱلْءَايَٰتِۚ
the Verses
wal-lahu
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
ʿalīmun
عَلِيمٌ
(is) All-Knower
ḥakīmun
حَكِيمٌ
All-Wise
And Allah makes clear to you the verses [i.e., His rulings], and Allah is Knowing and Wise. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 18)
Tafsir
19

اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ يُحِبُّوْنَ اَنْ تَشِيْعَ الْفَاحِشَةُ فِى الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ اَلِيْمٌۙ فِى الدُّنْيَا وَالْاٰخِرَةِۗ وَاللّٰهُ يَعْلَمُ وَاَنْتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُوْنَ ١٩

inna
إِنَّ
Indeed
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
yuḥibbūna
يُحِبُّونَ
like
an
أَن
that
tashīʿa
تَشِيعَ
(should) spread
l-fāḥishatu
ٱلْفَٰحِشَةُ
the immorality
فِى
among
alladhīna
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
āmanū
ءَامَنُوا۟
believe
lahum
لَهُمْ
for them
ʿadhābun
عَذَابٌ
(is) a punishment
alīmun
أَلِيمٌ
painful
فِى
in
l-dun'yā
ٱلدُّنْيَا
the world
wal-ākhirati
وَٱلْءَاخِرَةِۚ
and the Hereafter
wal-lahu
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
yaʿlamu
يَعْلَمُ
knows
wa-antum
وَأَنتُمْ
while you
لَا
(do) not
taʿlamūna
تَعْلَمُونَ
know
Indeed, those who like that immorality should be spread [or publicized] among those who have believed will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you do not know. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 19)
Tafsir
20

وَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ اللّٰهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهٗ وَاَنَّ اللّٰهَ رَءُوْفٌ رَّحِيْمٌ ࣖ ٢٠

walawlā
وَلَوْلَا
And if not
faḍlu
فَضْلُ
(for the) Grace of Allah
l-lahi
ٱللَّهِ
(for the) Grace of Allah
ʿalaykum
عَلَيْكُمْ
upon you
waraḥmatuhu
وَرَحْمَتُهُۥ
and His Mercy
wa-anna
وَأَنَّ
And that
l-laha
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
raūfun
رَءُوفٌ
(is) Full of Kindness
raḥīmun
رَّحِيمٌ
Most Merciful
And if it had not been for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy... and because Allah is Kind and Merciful. (QS. [24] An-Nur: 20)
